It's Time to Stop Talking About Final Fantasy

Here is something that I've come across a bit whenever anyone mentions one of the Final Fantasy games. People will quickly rush to talk about their favorite title even when the topic is about a specific Final Fantasy title. Why is that? Each and every game is unique. Each game draws little from the previous title. Sure there are some similarities between games but all in all they are unique and differed from title to title. I've heard the argument that one Final Fantasy is better than another. This is absurd and it has to stop.
This is like comparing apples and oranges. Some will like the apples, some will like the oranges. There really is nothing comparable between them other than one's preference for taste.

So can we please stop talking about Final Fantasy as a list of favorites and just enjoy the games?

Well my favourite final fantasy game is ...

j/k

I think you could probably seperate the games out into Medieval and Cyberpunk.? Some people are going to prefer one over the other all the time I'll agree with that. Might be why 9 was popular becuase it was kind of steampunky. Just a thought.

So I started playing FFIX yesterday, already 12 hours in today, past the first disk. I'm enjoying far more than I remember enjoying it 10+ years ago.

Freiya's baddassery though, that I remembered fine and it is unchanged, she's still my fav :D. (Steiner's growing on me though, about the last thing I expected happening)

It's like the ones before 7 but with after-7 cinematic storytelling. It's fairytale-ish and not as hi-tech, the combat is good but not groundbreaking like 10's.

Like every other, loving or hating it is all about the characters, there's an interesting mix of personalities, Freiya which I mentioned is a dragon knight, a rat-person (there's a lot of animal races in it's universe) and she's that proud type of dragoon you'd expect but with a touch of femininity that makes her just pop out. The game has a lot of funny moments, combined with some deeper existential sad stuff.

Nobody wants to talk about the game XI and up, that is the problem.

VI was the best BTW. I have done so so so many run throughs of that game.

Eh, I loved XIII, finished it in 5 days, people hate it for the same reason they hated X-2, they're both too much "anime" so if you play it in English it's just odd.

Imports rule! :p

VI was fun but the pixels just lose their impact if the first time you experience them is over 10 years after they've been made. I had no nostalgia to dim my lenses.

Somewhat on topic, I don't think you CAN separate them, because they really are a series. Like, if someone said, I don't like the battle system in VIIi, the immediate response is I liked it in IX, because it is the closest proxy. I agree with obessing over the 'best' one is annoying, but if it is a well discussed answer I think it is actually more valid to do so.

...more like comparing apples and oranges to tacos... shit tacos... VI was my precious golden apple, V was the best orange.

but no, we really can't just enjoy the games, because this site is where we come to discuss them.

FF gets that because most folks think of the series in nostalgia eyes.

Square-Soft/Enix used to be such a loved company...now...not so much.

As a once fanboy the the company, it's kind of a shame the path they've gone.
Time to jump ship to support Atlus...;)

What path? I fail to see what changed.
They USED to make some great games, ones with story and graphics.

Now, not so much.

For me they've gone downhill.

I fell for FFX when the games were introduced to the PS2, the graphics made my mouth water and there was so much added into the story and gameplay that I couldnt get from playing it once. I think I've completed it from beginning to end 6 times now!
But I think it ended there for the FF games.. Now they're either trying too hard or lack any classic charm. As a fan I think a series like Final Fantasy needs to stick to what it knows, new combat systems like they tried to do in 12 or this awful thing with the GFs in 13 are just putting me off.

So yeah, its easy to compare the original games and in a way that's what I like, anyone with half a brain can realise that each Final Fantasy game is different in its own way but having that little connection is what keeps the whole series alive and not just one good game amoungst a few bad ones.

I can't help but think that maybe the franchise would be better if they managed to Create names for every game, such as Final Fantasy X would be "Journey to Zanarkand". I'm not sure how well/bad that will change it, just want to throw in my two cents.

They still make good games.
Not near as good as they used to make.

Also:
Front Mission - once a GREAT series, classic.
Now? HAHAHAHAHAHA!
REALLY?

SQ was great.
SE isn't.

Its more like compairing red apples to green apples. They are still apples though.
