Yup, Skyrim is my first Elder Scrolls game. I've gotta admit in the past I've never bothered picking one up even though I love RPG's and my friends always told me how good they were.
When I first started I really didn't play with the right mind-set, I was simply focusing straight on the main story line and only drifted off to the Companions for a little while. I didn't explore areas, caves, camps etc. I also went for a pretty standard sword and board build without branching into much, I then ruined my game by racing up blacksmithing and getting decked in Daedric armour. I finished the game and I didn't feel like I had the amazing experience that everyone on the net goes on about, I was about ready to give up with the game and give it back to my friend.
Later that night I was doing some browsing on the Escapist and started reading some skyrim threads and I got the enthusiasm to roll a Rogue type character (my go to choice in RPG's that I get involved in) - I spent the time on my character so I was happy with her and delved into the world properly. I decided I that I would skip out on fast travelling and run everywhere (I read about some people doing it in a thread on these forums I think), exploring everything that would pop up on my mini-map and I now LOVE the game!
I've been exploring the Thieves Guild, The Dark Brotherhood and joined the Imperial Legion, venturing into extensive crypts, dungeons etc - reading a lot of stuff online to find the rare items and weapons. My basic point is that my love for exploration has been forgotten with all the linear games I've played in the last few years I think!
Anyway, I'd like to personally thank the Escapist community for the enthusiasm I've seen on this game whilst on the forums because without what I've read on here I probably would have given up on the game!
