I used the search bar, approved. All that came up were a bunch of threads about the avatar above yours.

I went and saw Avatar over the weekend, and I thought it was one of the greatest movies I have ever seen. Spectacular visuals, great action, and engaging story.

In my excitement, I would just like to know what the escapists thought about this movie, or if you haven't seen it yet, what are your expectations from the commercials or trailers (or MovieBob)?

(Please mark spoilers if you are going to reveal a key point in the movie)

I went to see the 3D version............. DONT DO IT!
wearing the eye straining 3D glasses gets old after the first half an hour. The 3D effects look pretty but the strong migraine I experienced afterwards wasn't worth the pretty effects.

but nonetheless it was an excellent story. ;]

I thought the 3D was pretty cool, but I agree the glasses did suck. They are so uncomfortable, they hurt my damn ears.

Old overdone story with special effects doesn't make it good. It could be that I had to sit between an emo kid and what looked, and smelled, like a stereotypical hippy. I give it a B+ for explosions and a D+ for a story about tree hugging.

I'm waiting for the DVD release. I assure you... once people have to watch it on their own TV, they'll stop their mindless praise and put it down with the rest of we "haters".

Avatar was an all round good film with action scenes that boarder on amazing and 'god I hope no one slipped LSD into my drink' that was slightly hampered by a few story issues.

No deal breakers of course, it's not the kind of story that caries on in total nonsense for 2 hours and expects you to know all the subtle plot threads by the end, nor dose it punch you in the gut every 5 seconds. It's more of a light jab every so often.

For example the arrogant CEO type guy and Captain Genocide are constantly carrying on and blowing up peoples homes over 'Unobtainium', emphasizing it's value and what not, but it's never explained why it's so valuable in the first place.

I found the name of the metal to be quite amusing and ironic, to say the least.

This movie is totally worth the ticket price, especially if you're going to see it in 3-D. It's almost impossible to go wrong with a James Cameron film; he practically coined the 'Does it so well' tagline.

By thte way, the "OH GOD DID I JUST SEE THAT" 3-D effects, for how sparse they were throughout the film, were truly mind-blowing. I'd go see it again just to get immersed in the jungles of Pandora once more.

To be honest, I think people like you need to lay off the Hater-Aid and be more accepting of what is a genuinely great movie.

It was amazing for me too, I loved the art and scenery and the battle scenes were epic. Also unlike so many others in a similar genre that feautre a love story, the love story featured in Avatar did not make me want to vomit, in fact it was so beautiful and for me at least emotionally moving that the chemistry between the male lead and his lovely alien girlfriend was actually the highlight.
Seriously though, a good movie for all its points and it's been a while since I've made a movie review but I'll probably make one for Avatar... it's just that good.

The point is, they made hippy treehugging look awesome again.

Avatar looks amazing. It's probably the best looking film I've ever seen. The world of Pandora is engaging and breathtaking. It's honestly an accomplishment of what the human mind is capable of in terms of creativity.

But the story has been done before. It might be engaging, sure, but it's been done before so many times I just couldn't get into it. I think the developers knew that too, since if I recall the entire story was given away in the theatrical trailer. Characters are very well done though (if a bit archetypical) and it features some of the best acting I've seen. Michelle Rodriguez and Stephen Lang did an amazing job, as did Sigourney Weaver and Sam Worthington.

I'm not saying that the movie is bad. It's a great movie, just that the visuals carry it farther than the story ever will.

It was much better than I was expecting. While the movie does rely heavily on spectacle, there is more to it than just that. It's not an original story, by any means (See: Dances with Wolves) and the some of the characters seem a little one dimensional, but both the characters and story are compelling enough that I was able to stay interested.

For those of you interested in my more detailed thoughts, here's a "review" that I wrote in an e-mail for a friend after seeing the movie:

"Well, my official opinion is that it is a terrific movie. I
was a little surprised, as I went into it expecting simple CG
entertainment, but this was not the case. Avatar is no 2001: A Space
Odyssey, but it's a far, far better movie than most which are special
effects driven. (see Transformers)

The Effects:
The visuals were quite stunning. They weren't amazingly beyond others
that we're seeing today, but they're definitely a major selling point,
especially in 3D. Most of the time, the effects were convincing
enough that I forgot I was looking at special effects, which brings up
an interesting paradox. As CG becomes more and more realistic, in
some ways, it also become less and less spectacular. As it approaches
reality, your brain stops going "Wow, that looks incredible," and
starts going "wow, that looks normal." Granted, these effects can be
used to show amazing things, which rarely ever occur in reality, but
the spectacle itself ceases to be amazing. In my opinion, this is an
excellent development. Sooner or later, the movie going public will
become jaded with CG effects, and film makers will be forced to once
again focus on other elements of their work, which will provide us
with more and more "best of both worlds" movies. Avatar, I believe,
is a step in this direction. The CG effects are fantastic, but they
didn't feel like the reason for the movies' existence (at least to
me.) It felt like the CG was a really cool too used to impart
something much deeper, which is as it should be.

The Plot:
The plot conveys many powerful ideas and emotions. These ideas are
nothing that we haven't seen before, but they are very effectively
conveyed, providing a great experience. South Park's comparison to
Dances with Wolves is actually very accurate. In fact, I might go as
far as to say that the movies have pretty much the same plot, just a
different setting. Now, one can argue that this is less than stellar,
as there is very little originality in the plot. However, Dances with
Wolves told a very archetypal story: a more technologically powerful
culture seeks to take something from another, more spiritual culture,
and the victims' way of life is threatened. It's the same tale of the
righteous underdog versus the evil, overpowering force, which will
probably never get old.

There were cliche moment of the film, but they were never deal
breakers. I only found myself groaning during a couple of the
romantic subplot scenes, which, surprisingly, were not all extremely
painful to watch. Some were, but some of those moments felt genuine,
which is quite hard to do in a movie.

The Characters:
This is one of the places where I feel the movie is a little lacking.
There was very little depth to most of the characters, but there was
not so little depth that I couldn't enjoy myself. The acting
performances were never terrible, and were often pretty good. Despite
the lack of depth to some of the characters, what is there is usually
pretty believable, at least it was for me.

Final Verdict:
As I began with, I feel the movie was very good. The comments
floating about before it was released such as "This movie will change
the way films are made," and "a completely original plot," were by no
means warranted, but if you go into the movie looking for a good
story, with more depth than your average film, believable characters
and stunning visual effects you will certainly not be disappointed, in
fact you may be a little impressed. I'm giving it four out of five
creepy blue-alien sex scenes.

Might do a review of it for the website I write for, but I doubt it.

The film was fairly boiler-plate, as I've seen the story so many times before that it became almost insulting when I considered how long ago they came up with this movie. Blatantly unoriginal story with some massive holes that are never filled; primary plot holes are already approached here in the thread, such as why the precious metal was so precious, the reasoning behind most of the research team, where the rest of the avatar units were for most of the film, the science behind most of ANYTHING going on, the backstory to Weaver's character, her school etc.

Visually it was a-fucking-mazing, featuring some of the most gorgeous, if somewhat stereotypical, depictions of alien flora/fauna I've ever seen dedicated to a screen in this new-fangled age of them CGIs and such, with such a spectacular use of budget on screen... and nowhere else...

Sorry, this movie had too high of expectations to be so rich to look at and so lacking in so many other areas. The acting, ideas and, especially, the main characters were so fucking i nsultingly bland that it left a bad taste in my mouth, and it kills me to know that the primary villain was the most likeable/charasmatic character in the whole story...
Great points for finally getting Joel Moore acting in something big for once, that man's talent has gone so underappreciated for all these years... it's sickening, really, but I'm glad Cameron's starting to return to form... also glad he decided to cut out SOMETHING from this movie (even though it was the more important plot devices rather than the effect-driven action scenes but, meh, how else are you going to keep audiences watching in this day and age?), it shows he's really maturing as a director and realizing that his way is not always the best way (the man fucking ruined "Aliens" and "Terminator 2" with his boring-ass director's cuts).

6.9/10

NOTE:
Every single lame joke and comparison to "Dances with Wolves" prior to this films release are completely and utterly justifiable. Though, as MovieBob pointed out in his EXTREMELY NEEDED and intelligent pre-viewing writing, yes, the story has been done many times before the Costner snore-fest (I fucking hate that man), but I felt, after the viewing, that t hat's what this one seemed to draw most heavily from. Seriously. Dead-on for most of it.

I kind thought of it most comparable to Uncharted 2 in my reception
I had seen parts of the story before and I had seen some of the plot elements coming from far away... and a few nitpicks here and there.

but the whole thing was done SO WELL and looked phenomenal. Not to mention it was just a fun movie that I enjoyed seeing. That ultimately I didnt care about the flaws from the story too much.
