So far he's only listed as producer so if you're not a fan of his I guess you don't have to worry too much about the lens flares lmao

I personally think it's good news but I really don't know how the hell they can make a Portal or Half-Life movie just because of lol silent protagonists.

Haha, yeah, they may need to work some lines into the protagonists, but otherwise its pretty good news for half-life and portals fan base, in which I can gather is pretty loyal.

Honestly, while both those games are great, neither of them seem like they'd work in movie form. Ok, first we've got the silent protagonist thing, which instantly throws a spanner in the works. Then, look at portal, it's just someone solving puzzles while a computer mocks them. Solving puzzles works brilliantly for games, not so much for movies. As for half life, there's really not much plot to go on in the first one, and only one persistent character (who never talks), so they'd pretty much have to write their own story, which has a big chance of falling apart (They could skip to Half life 2, that could work, though it'd still be a videogame movie, which all but guarantees awfulness). No, if this ever does come to anything, it'll most likely suck.

Unless of course, they use this as their basis for Gordon.

Half-life and Portal movies made by JJ Abrams? Pffff. Bull... *clicks on link and sees JJ shaking hands with Gabe Newell*. Well I stand corrected. But the only proof they have is his IMDb page, how official is that shit? (I don't know how IMDb is updated)

Freeman's Mind! Now thanks to you, I'll waste precious minutes watching a few episodes.

But nevermind that. I agree that a Half-Life movie would be difficult to make, when you have a silent protagonist that's loved by everyone despite the fact that he's just a camera holding a gun.

But Portal... I think a Portal movie has the potential to be a much better version of Cube, which in my opinion, is a good movie. Here's the trailer, if you don't know what I'm talking about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MY5PkidV1cM

You know, this is kinda getting the the point of absurdity. We might as well make a Know Your Meme page titled "J.J. Abrams Makes Everything" and call it day.

Heh, it's like he's created a checklist of things us nerds love and is checking away at it. As if Star Wars AND Star Trek weren't enough. Now he's hitting up our most popular games?

It's like someone prophesied awhile back, saying that he would come and be our benevolent king.

JJ Abrams is a competently average, but very overhyped filmmaker with a habit of keeping what his audience wants just out of reach.
Sounds like a perfect fit for adapting the works of Valve.

And this as their basis for Chell:

It's significantly better than someone who completely ruins a franchise (Lucas). Yeah, Abrams doesn't do full-on Nerd fan service, but he does that in an effort to make our stuff more accessible and I don't dislike his direction. Sometimes it's a lot more "action-y" than I'd expect but it's more important to me that our stuff does well enough to get heavy investment while trying to stay as true to our material as possible. He walks that line pretty well.

People are saying it would be difficult to make Portal or Half-Life movies when really it wouldn't be, you just need to set it in the game Universe but not use the protagonists from the games. Imagine if the Portal film was a depiction of the events that led up to GlaDOS being activated and taking over? That could be interesting without messing up Chell's character. Same thing with Half-Life, maybe base it around other people who were around during the events of the game(s). Lots of fan films do the same and they are pretty good considering they were made on fairly low budgets.

And yeah, I'd hardly say it is confirmed just because of some old news and something on IMDB. Until it comes from Valve and they officially announce that someone is writing a script and they are casting it I'll file it with 'wild internet rumour' along with the millions of HL3 confirmations.

Not that the thought of either film interests me in any way shape or form to care who is directing something I most likely will not watch.

But WTF... Is this guy going for the Seth Mcfarlane lifetime achievement award for unwarranted redundant over exposure?!!?

Hmm, interesting, that would work. However, they will most likely use the characters. I don't think Half Life would have been less good with a well-scripted well-voiced Gordon.

Portal 2 would likely have to be completely rewritten. Hopefully they'd be able to maintain the quirkiness and wouldn't just turn it into some outlandish action film.

Good, something for him to do when he's done ruining Star Trek and Star Wa- ...oh wait, that was already ruined. He can only improve Star Wars.

How exactly could he make a movie about either of these games? Portal has a totally self contained storyline which starts and basically ends with Portals 1 and 2, so anything he does is going to be an expansion or a retelling or lord forbid a reboot in which case it will be as dead as the Star Trek reboot. Half Life hasn't finished the story but I doubt Valve are going to let him expand on the after events of Ep 2.

If Half Life 3 turns out to be a movie instead of a game I would be so freaking happy.
But that's only because I'm a mutant hellspawn that feeds on the pain and misery of others.

I'm gonna go ahead and not really be bothered by this.
I fell in love with the games, if the movies suck they'll still be there, as awesome as ever.

How do you have a movie where the main character has less dialogue than his armor?
