I have never had a job before but I am 17 so it is about time I get one. I have tried before but I have no job experience and I never get called back. I know that if I can get an interview I will be able to get a job but what can I do to improve my chances of getting called back. I include a resume but it doesn't have much more than basic contact information, my high school education and some basic work skills.

Any advice on how to get a job?

You have to keep bugging them if it's something you're interested in. Put in a resume. Call them back and ask to speak to a manager or person in charge of hiring. Tell them your name, and explain that you're interested in a job. Keep bugging them and let them know that you're interested and enthusiastic about the job. Don't wait for them to call you back, because lots of places will have a pile of applications and if there is nothing to distinguish you from the pack then you'll just get lost in the pile.

Call them back, just to see if the position has been filled. Don't be desperate, but let them know that you need work, and (most importantly) that you are willing to work and take it seriously.
More often than not, based on my experiences on the other side of the interview desk, people your age are being made to apply by their parents. Most places will be reluctant to take a chance on training someone who will probably get themselves fired in a month.
Best of luck.

also, as much as you may not want to accept this, you need to realize that your first job is going to suck and you're not going to make much money. but it's a stepping stone and a learning experience. as cliched as it sounds, it will build character. get a couple crappy jobs under your belt, so to speak, and eventually you will have the references and experience to get something good. (unless you're really good looking and self-assured, in which case you may be able to land something good right away)

If possible, don't just call. Go in and deliver your CV (resumé, whatever) by hand. Shows you're eager and willing and all that. Won't help in every case, but it only needs to help the once right?

How are you filling out the job application/resume? No matter what inexperiences you have, you have be what they would be looking for. Like at fast food, they want someone that is enthusiastic about their product. In general, they want trustworthy, responsible, hard working, etc. people. So somehow you got to convey that in job application/resume and/or interview. If you have babysat for some people, mowed some lawns, washed people's cars. Show that you are responsible and such even though you didn't get paid for it like it is your character trait and not something you have to do because it is your job.

Like many others have said, you got to call them back about the job. It shows interest for them. Like call them a couple days later after you turned in your application/resume.

Good luck, it is hard to get your foot in the door but once you do, it gets easier. Also see if any of your friends that have jobs to see if they have job openings. Referrals make it easier to get that job as well.
