so, i am in grad school right now and it is boring the crap out of me. So, rather than just saying screw it and dropping out.

Monday i am going to go join the Navy. They gave me a really good offer a couple of years ago, and i have been kicking myself for walking away from it ever since. So, since i am not getting any younger i figured i might as well join now.

anyone else in willing to tell me a bit what its like? personal xp? anything like that?

People will post a certain song by the Village People.

It's not very representative of modern naval practices.

Seriosuly, though, you probably want to speify which Navy you are joining, and as what.

If its the US Navy, bummer for you.

They don't give out good offers anymore.

Other than that, welcome to the brotherhood of war fights.

I'd think it through for a while just so you are sure that you want to actually join the Navy.
This seems like a very large impulse decision, and considering that you're pretty much choosing to make being in the Navy your career for a while, I'd think it through more than "Fuck this, I'm bored. Let's join the Navy!"

Well you can get some good deals if you finish college. I'm planning on becoming a Naval Engineer and have gotten some deals from them in the mail, and they'll pay for my college. Once I graduate I become an Officer. My Grandfather did the same thing when he joined the Air Force and became a teacher afterwards.
OT: Which Naval career do you have in mind? By that I mean which field of work you are signing up for.

Thats not really a deal... its standard practice.

And I'd beware. The Navy, like the Army, is at max capacity. They may not offer you the job you want, if they have no need for it.

Never trust your recruiter. I did, and I learned that yes, the Navy doesn't hand out pink slips, no, it sends you to their legal department, does a quick inquiry, and possibly sends you on your way. Your recruiter is a funnel, just pushing people into bootcamp to meet quotas for bonuses, it's the Petty Officers and Chief Petty Officers who act as filters for each new recruit.

Since your in grad school go FUCKING OFFICER or you need to turn your Bachelor's degree back in to your college/university because you obviously are an idiot

go here, look around, bother people on their forum
www.military.com

I was a Marine and not a sailor and while the branches have a close relation.... very different realities, especially depending on what field you go in to. Submarines, Surface warfare, Aviation, Special Ops (SpecWar in squid talk)

Above all when dealing with the recruiter get EVERYTHING in writing

Finally, don't listen to worgen on the whole combat thing, shockingly lots of people have make it back from that all the time and by enlisting/comissioning in the US military, no matter what specialty you choose, no matter what branch of service you are volunteering to take that risk. If you want to let someone do the fighting for you, stay a civilian. This is blunt and rapid fire because I'm in a rush and this is stuff you need to go over and make a decision on before you ever sit down with a recruiter.

Feel free to PM me

True, I've got fall back plans set up as well. I do know that it is at a high capacity since I live in San Diego. It's getting harder and harder to get in, but mainly being a Shipwright has been a career I've wanted since I was 3 years old, or to just work on maintenance for the ships. Do you know of any offers they might have given before?

Any US Armed forces is a good choice.

Thank you for choosing to serve. You are now my brother. the brother I tease for being in the Navy until you send our Marine brothers (because the Marines like Navy better then us Army guys) to kick my ass ;)

But seriously, all my stories are from the Army. Good luck and stay safe.

PS: One tip, go up to your Drill Sargent and ask for some chem light batteries and a box of ten grid squares. Then, after training and you get Internet again, tells us about the results.

Oh, if you do join the USN, when you get to bootcamp, you better pray to whatever god you worship that your instructor is a Red Rope and not a Blue Rope. Red's have proven themselves to be good instructors, Blue's haven't, and need to prove it by using whoever they're instructing.

Oooh that's just cruel Gil, at least let him sign the papers before the hazing sets in. My favorite of those is actually something I got from an Army Airborne thing "go get the keys to the drop zone". Similar in my squadron we had a boot running around panicking because he couldn't find the keys for one of the hueys. (FYI modern military aircraft do not have keyed ignition lol)

Watch out for the Marines, and if the political situation and the media's habit of blatantly lying leads to another Civil War, please do not shoot me. I'm just a doctor and failed writer, not someone you'd want to waste ammo on.

Don't forget the keys to the Humvees, which you have to fill out a PRIC-E5 for. They're the same type of form as an I.D.:10t.

Hell, that's what I did! And no, I didn't make a career out of it and I hated most of it, but I still feel like I'm a better person for having gone through it. And it looks good on a resume.
