So although I love my 360 to death and it will always be my special little guy, I finally caved in and bought a PS3 this weekend, for a couple of reasons:

(1) to get around some regional issues that come from being a British expat in Africa - Oh Microsoft, why won't you sell me any CoD games, or any Battlefield games, or any GTA games? Don't you want my money?

(2) There are some PS3 exclusives that I needed to have. This is where you knowledgeable gamers come in. The games that enticed me to get the PS3 were the following:

Flower
Okami
The Unfinished Swan
Killzone 3
LittleBigPlanet
Journey

As you can see, those are mostly games with a sort of artsy mood, sometimes with a rather 'Japanese' aesthetic and a focus on beauty and elegance rather than necessarily lots of heavy gameplay. (Apart from Killzone, which has guns n stuff.) So I'm sure there are more games along those lines for the PS3, and I'd love to know what they are. Please tell me!

[Side note: is the PS3 always so slow with starting a game for the first time? When I got it home I threw in the free game that came with it, Gran Turismo, a game I have no interest in whatsoever, and it was about 90 minutes before it was ready to play, no exaggeration, after all the installing and updates and then another install for good luck. What's that about? My 360 doesn't need all that, but I thought they were about equally matched.]

Anyway, please recommend me some pretentious artsy PS3 games. My wallet's not going to empty itself.

Are you asking for exclusively PS3 games or multi-plat games? Forgive me if I haven't comprehended, it's rather late.

I recommend Okami. Played it on the Wii. It's an adorable Legend of Zelda-esque adventure game where you transverse beautiful Japanese painting worlds, acquiring new brush techniques that allow you to manipulate the world around you (make the sun/moon come out, sprout trees, bloom flowers, etc). It's a fun and absolutely gorgeous game, with some cute characters, a memorable story and plenty to do/explore, though it can be a bit hard to figure out what to do at times. It's a shame there aren't more games out there like it. Definitely worth picking up if you're into adventure games.

And for whatever it's worth, I've heard nothing but good things of Journey and it is definitely a great looking game.

Also, Killzone? Pretentious and artsy?

Sure, multi-plat would be nice too. But I just got the PS3 so I'm all about it at the moment. I hope the 360 didn't hear me say that.

Honestly, one of my favorite games of the last generation was Catherine. I thought the imagery, subject, and tone were incredibly well done with a philosophical and psychological exploration of adult themes and real world idealogies. If you like 'tactics' style games, the Disgaea series is Playstation exclusive and incredibly engrossing and entertaining.= as well.

Demon's Souls is definitely worth a look. I prefer Dark Souls because the difficulty is somewhat fairer, but Demon's Souls has excellent atmosphere and solid, precise combat as well. The difficulty may be a major turn-off, but if you stick with it you'll find a fair, challenging experience full of risk and reward, and a varied action RPG core.

Yeah I got Demon's Souls as it is free on PS Plus at the moment, but I haven't been able to psyche myself up to playing it yet. I'm scared of the very name.

Okami?

Yes, gewd, gewwwwwwwd

I haven't completed it yet, but The Last of Us is looking like it may very well be the last great game for the PS3 before the PS4 shows up.

You should try to get some HD collection's. Those things are sweet. You would probably love Ico + Shadow of the Colossus. Also some more good ones are the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, the Hitman collection and the Devil May Cry collection. I don't know if those three would be your thing but they're good value.

I'd recommend PS+ as well, new games every month, and other stuff.

Some of the stuff you mentioned has been on PS+, and Little Big Planet is on the permanent list of free games for that.

The Last of Us.

I haven't actually finished it yet but, unless it somehow manages to take a dive in quality of incredible proportions toward the end, it's fucking excellent.

Looks great, nice music, scarce resources, intense combat, good characters, good dialogue. Does damn near everything right.

If you have a PS3 and you don't have the Ratchet and Clank games then you are doing it wrong ;)

You can even get the PS2 games in an HD collection now which contains the best game of the series 'Up Your Arsenal'

Honestly, the Uncharted-games are brilliant action-adventures if you're in the mood for something light-hearted. Nathan Drake gets a lot of shit, but I actually like the guy a lot, even if Sully is the standout character in the games for me.

The Last of Us is also absolutely brilliant. While the story is rather simple, the way they told it is incredibly compelling and it is also rather tense at times.

I can also wholeheartedly recommend Valkyria Chronicles. It's a turnbased strategy JRPG, and it currently holds the position of my favourite JRPG, even if Persona 3 FES is rapidly approaching the top spot :p

Should I be hearing Emperor Palpatine's voice? Because I am. Well if he approves, I'll definitely get it.

Thanks man, Ico + Shadow looks like just the ticket. PS+ seems to have Xbox Live Gold beat in terms of value, although I did get Hitman Absolution for 5 quid on the 360 in a sale while it's 50 quid on the PS3, so maybe I shouldn't be hasty to judge. Still, free games = instant loyalty and respect from me. I can see why people love Sony.

Hitman Absolution was free on PS+ up until end of May...

PS+ is pretty much the way to go, a ton of awesome stuff now and it just keeps on updating with great stuff. I'd recommend buying all the Vita stuff while it's free a well, that way if you ever pick up a Vita you can just download a stack of great games for free.

Oh God, you're killing me. I'm so glad I made this decision.

So do I have this right: the games I get for free on PS+ will last as long as my subscription does, after which they'll be inaccessible. Is that right? What if I don't renew my sub one month for whatever reason - will my save games still be retained for when I do renew it?

As I understand it anything you download from PS+ can be played if you have an active subscription regardless of when you downloaded it or what happened to your subscription in the meantime. However it sounds like your saves get deleted from the cloud as soon as your subscription lapses, you'll have to reupload them from your PS3 at that point.
