So a friend recommended Sword Art Online to me and I loved it. I'm now keen on more Anime series but I'm not too sure where to start. If anyone could recommend some good series I would appreciate it.

...REALLY hard to get a bead on what you'd like with a sample pool of one. The thing is that Anime isn't so much a genre as it is a medium. Within it you can find Psychological Thrillers like Monster, Science Fantasy works like Fullmetal Alchemist[footnote]Word of warning here, FMA has two series, the first of which diverged from the manga when it became clear that they were ready to overtake what was then-released for it. The second series (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood) is ultimately MUCH more faithful to the source material, but tends to skim the early episodes, which cover the same material the first series did before it overtook the manga. Both are very highly regarded and worth a gander, but my personal preference is for Brotherhood[/footnote], loose adaptations like Samurai 7 (VERY loose in this case. I might be wrong, but I don't think that Kurasawa's Seven Samurai film had sci-fi elements like mecha in it), there are more slice of life comedies like Ouran High School Host Club[footnote]No link included for Ouran due to the sheer impossibility of describing it without running into a fun spoiler which later becomes a defining feature[/footnote], or things like Baccano! which...well, I honestly can't decide what genre is its main one in that case. And then, of course, there is Studio Ghibli, which is basically to anime what Pixar is to CGI...

I recommend Baccano! for a classy story told in anarchic order, quote TVTropes, about immortal bootleggers, mafiosi, robbers and criminals in general of the 1930s. It's a bloody, pun intended, good time. It also features a fantastic intro with a kickass jazz piece.

Bad Shinji.

But yeah, excluding the previously mentioned exclusion Shinji seems to have this pretty much sorted. Listen to him.

Define 'good'... 'cos depending on who you ask, Sword Art Online is shite...

Personally, I haven't seen it, primarily because it's on the trope-y side (and an in-series overused concept by the looks of things).

What I consider to be good, based on your enjoyment of SAO, may not really be to your taste:

Haibane Renmei
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0
Serial Experiments Lain
Gunslinger Girl
(manga's better)
Ergo Proxy (you might like this one)
GitS:SAC (already mentioned... wait, holy shit, my bad, it hasn't been mentioned... WTF happened people?!)
Usagi Drop (haven't read it, but apparently, the manga's better)
Fuujin Monogatari
Seirei no Moribito

That'll do for now I guess. See how you do.

It all depends on what you're looking for and what kind of stories you enjoy. My personal favorites though...

5/4 - Rosario + Vampire/Love Hina: These are a Ha-Rom-Com (a romantic comedy in which the main character is surrounded by women who want to jump his bone). What sets Rosario + Vampire apart is the setting: Since the main character couldn't get into a good high school, he had to rely on an entrance ticket thing his father found randomly which gained him admission to Yokai University. The problem is, Youkai University is a school for monsters, yokai, etc with a zero tolerance policy regarding humans who are to be killed on sight. Since everyone maintains a human form anyway the main character can blend in etc. I loved the humor in this series and watched both seasons that are available on netflix. Honestly I think Love Hina is a bit better...but...hold on: there we go. Watch one or both or neither if you don't like Haromcom.

3 - GTO: This one is about a slacker and a pervert with aspirations of being a teacher. When he finally becomes one he's put in charge of a notoriously bad class. Hilarity ensues as Onizuka gains the trust, friendship, etc of his students. This one is a bit more difficult to come across and is a bit old though not nearly as old as my number one.

2 - Detroit Metal City: Do you like Metalocalypse? DMC is basically the anime version, following an artist who wants to be a famous folk singer. Sadly, when his music is criticized and ridiculed he gets drunk, perverts the lyrics and has somehow made his way into the being the front-man darkest, most Metal band in Japan's underground music scene. It's a hilarious show and definitely worth a watch. It also spawned a live action film featuring Gene Simmons as American rocker Jack Ill Dark or something along those lines.

1 - Fist of the North Star: It's an old anime series and it's censored in a way that makes it look like everyone is bleeding milk. When Dragon Ball Z was the number one show among my peers, I was into Fist of the North Star which introduced a new bad guy each episode and freaking murdered the hell out of that person by the end (or the end of the following episode) with one overarching big-bad with each season. The animation is dated as all Hell but it's still solid and full of over-the-top action.

I am watching the whole Macross series now. Great way to end the year.

i love Detroit Metal City by the way. I was laughing uncontrollably when it first came out as manga. My boss at work recommended it to me at work, and I still appreciate it to this day. LOL

Eh, Gurren Lagann was... okay.

I'm not too crazy about totally crazy Gainax. I need some normalcy here and there, otherwise the crazy will cancel itself out.

Anime that would be a great introduction to the media of anime:

Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
Cowboy Bebop
Trigun
Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Death Note
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro
Princess Mononoke
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
Akira
Castle in the Sky
Howl's Moving Castle
Spirited Away
Ghost in the Shell
Kids on the Slope
Whisper of the Heart
Fate/Zero
Kara no Kyoukai
Baccano!
Time of Eve
Tokyo Godfathers
Summer Wars
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
The Dissapearence of Haruhi Suzumiya(Though to understand this you have to see the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya which is just passable for the most part)
Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo
Samurai Champloo
Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni + Higurashi Kai

Anime that are also great but are weirder and/or more difficult for a regular person to enjoy:

Neon Genesis Evangelion (Especially the End of Evangelion movie.)
Bakemonogatari/Nisemonogatari
Fooly Cooly
Revolutionary Girl Utena
Mawaru Penguindrum
Serial Experiments Lain
Paranoia Agent
Millennium Actress
Perfect Blue
Paprika
Grave of The Fireflies
Only Yesterday
My Neighbor Totoro
Rahxephon
Spice and Wolf

Also:
Legend of The Galactic Heroes, Monster and Clannad + Clannad After History. I haven't seen these series but EVERYONE says they're OMGTHEBESTHINGEVAH, So I guess you should check them out.

I hope I helped.

Since it seems as though everyone else has all the standards covered, allow me to suggest a couple that haven't been listed:

Rurouni Kenshin - If you're into samurai-period swordplay, few other shows can compete. It has ever been one of my favorite all-time animes with a great story, a believable "difficulty curve" for the hero throughout the story. And it has a great soundtrack. Also, if you can watch the three OVA movies (Samurai X) without crying at the last one then you have no soul. :p

Bobobo-bobo-Bobobo - Probably the funniest show - anime or otherwise - that I've ever seen, though this one I would strongly suggest trying to find the manga of. The show is still pretty damn hilarious, but the manga is an out-right riot. But I'll be the first to admit it takes a certain type of sense of humor in order to find this to be funny. It's absolute slapstick, 100% random and nonsensical...seriously, NOTHING makes sense, but that's how it's supposed to be, for it is the power of such insanity that gives the main character of the series his strength.

I've seen some other people suggest Evangelion, so allow me to slide this joke in. This is how a friend of mine described Neon Genesis when I was first thinking about watching it: "If you need therapy and you watch Evangelion, you won't need therapy by the end of it. If you don't need therapy and you watch it, you most certainly will by the end of it." Seriously, the last two episodes make less sense than the entire Bobobo series combined. "I am the me that I see myself as because I am me, not the me that other people believe me to be because their perception of me isn't the me that I truly am. So all I should strive for is to be the best me that I know how to be because I'm the me that I want to be." Orrrrr something like that.

Other mentions: While the Ghost in the Shell movie is great, the series that were made out of it "Stand Alone Complex" and "Second Gig" are very good cyber-punk series.

Lets see.....Cowboy Bebop's already been mentioned a thousand times, but it really is one of the gold standards of all of anime.

Think that about covers it for me, seeing as how everything else worth mentioning has already been mentioned.

Cowboy Bebop
Trigun
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Baccano!
Code Geass
Noein
Legend of The Galactic Heroes
Elfen Lied
Ghost in The Shell: Stand Alone Complex (even just for the soundtrack)
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Lupin III movies

Out of the ones I suggested I think you should check out Cowboy Bebop, Code Geass and FMA: Brotherhood first as they are very easy to enjoy for newcomers to the genre. The hardest going from the list being Baccano! NGE, LOGH and GITS: SAC, mainly by the way the plot is presented are huge amounts of "smart talk".

Darker Than Black, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Death Note and Code Geass are definitely recommended if you like serious story lines with a bit of supernatural in them (although like most anime, they do have a fair amount of light hearted moments at times).

If you like cyberpunk then Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex, Ergo Proxy and Texhnolyze are good choices. Although the latter two are somewhat bleak.

If you like light hearted stuff then The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is a good series, as is Angel Beats! which is also occasionally quite serious.

If you like action with a bit/lot of fan service then Highschool of the Dead and Witchblade are probably worth watching. They are not bad series, although personally I prefer less "cleavage shots for the sake of it".

Puella Magi Madoka Magica is definitely recommended, although it may not be for everyone. It's very clever, and certainly not what you would expect if you looked at the cover art. Easily one of my favourite ones, and I only discovered it recently.

Other notable mentions are Elfen Lied (very violent, fairly depressing, and a bit too much nudity) as well as Spice and Wolf (mostly character based, as the story is somewhat slow).

Watch angel beats. There is really nothing quite like it- it has comedy, satire, great characters and one of the best bittersweet endings ever.
