Hey guys,

I just got Fallout 3, and I love it! I just beat the mission where you talk to Three Dog, the GNR radio guy. Do you guys have any tips for me on how to play this game well from the start? As in "Upgrade this skill the most cause it's the most useful" and likewise.
Get Repair, Science, and Medicine up to max as soon as possible (as with all Fallout games). The game pretty much takes care of itself at that point. All your weapons will do max damage because they're fully repaired (and you repair items for free), you'll be able to hack any computer and/or robot resistance you come across, and you'll be able to heal massive amounts of health from just one Stimpack. Job done.

If you don't have DLC's (well, even if you do) don't follow the main plot line exclusively. In fact try to forget about it for a while, you won't be late for the party no matter how long it takes you and I found most of the fun to be in the random places you find. Just pick a random direction and start walking, you're bound to find something nice (or not so nice).
I got the Game of the Year edition so I have all the add-ons

Do all the side quests, and go into every building you can*. Explore!

*Except the Dunwhich building, unless you like shitting yourself.
Agree!

Except, being a hardened S.T.A.L.K.E.R veteran, Dunwhich was no problem for me.. but i would suggest avoiding it.
I couldn't remember what building that was, so I looked it up. I get chills just thinking about that building. I didn't get more than 20 feet in before I turned around and sprinted for the door. I marked that building on my map as a reminder to never ever enter it again.
Why? What's in that building?

I'll even tell you my fabulous build. This will provide a fun, versatile game! Endurance is a lot less important than one would think, Intelligence is a LOT MORE important than you'd think.
S- 2 Small Guns, Lockpick, Sneak.
P- 10
E- 2
C- 1
I- 10
A- 10
L- 5
I used a similar build for my character but relied on bobbleheads to up stats to 10---starting at 10 is a wasted point.

Mine went
S- 1
P- 9
E- 4
C- 3
I- 9
A- 9
L- 5
Getting the Intelligence bobblehead is easy-peasy:
It's in Rivet City Science Lab
Do it early and you'll be able to top out all your skills by level 30 (assuming Broken Steel installed).

Also, bonus tip: Don't get the Strength bobblehead unless you plan to blow up Megaton. Save it for level 30 and take the Almost Perfect perk.

Invest in small guns, lock picking and hacking, the most common and useful skills in the game.
Oh, and don't get the DLCs until your significantly into the game.
I got the Game of the Year edition so that problem has already taken care of itself :)

if you're a trophy whore, save just before you hit level 7 then get to level seven being good, (=gamerpoints) reload then go a thieving spree to bring your karma down to neutral (=more gamerpoints) reload then go on a killing spree (Megaton residents are such wusses)to become bad (=many gamerpoints) repeat at levels 14 and 20

If you have a high intelligence, lock picking, small guns and hacking you WILL enjoy the game. Explore, be amazed and always head toward the birds!

Never put more than 75% into Lockpicking or Science (I never took science as it's kinda meh imo). After 75% you can unlock anything and futher points wont make it any easier.

Also: MODS... mod it... download mods ... install them

Like Oblivion before this game REALLY shines with some game-mechanic upgrades and a high variety of user content crammed in. Just be careful to choose right.

here: http://www.fallout3nexus.com

good luck

EDIT: For example some mods allow for not-wasted points in attributes and skills (so you can get something even if going beyond 10 /100. Fixes some of the repairs and ammo problems. Have more variety in enemies and AI behaviour and much much more...

Stay away from Death-Claws if you don't have either a Fatman with mininukes, or godmode...
Having one of those 2 should be good enough.

Prepare yourself for disappointment. Small guns and a good repair skill will get you through this game with no effort at all, even on the hardest difficulty. If you are looking for challenge, use big guns or energy weapons.

get repair to 100 ASAP, makes life much easier.

If you go to the Republic of Dave, find a way to get your hands on his hunting rifle, Ol' Painless, it's 100% Accurate and awesome.

I used small arms predominantly, though you may find some energy weapons you prefer in the Mothership Zeta DLC.

If memory serves, you should do the Ten Penny Towers mission before Dunwich...
You end up being asked to clear the ghouls out of the nearby dungeon tunnels. When I completed the mission, I received a ghoul mask that made it so all ghouls ignored me when the mask was equipped. Because of this, I got all the way through Dunwich without firing a shot or having to sneak.
Also, don't drink the Nuka-Cola Quantum. Save it!

From someone with almost 400 hours on Fallout 3, here are my tips:

Most important : SAVE ALL THE TIME.

The bugs will get you if you don't.

Most important skills:

Small Guns
Repair
Lockpick

Max these first. Loot and repair everything you find, it will increase the sell value.

Steal everything you can get away with stealing, and sell it.

Once you have 1000 caps, go to Canturbury commons, talk to Uncle Roe about the tradrers and invest in Lucky Harith.

You will now have a trader with an infinite supply of good weapons. Wait in 2-hour gaps to make the different traders spawn.

Go to the Republic of Dave get Ol' Painless. (you can do this peacefully, google it to see how to rig the election). It's a unique hunting rifle which due its no-sway and plentiful ammo, will be your best friend for most of the game.

Talk to everyone. Don't go around randomly killing NPCs, you may miss out on quests.

Take the time to ignore quests and just go wandering the wastes, you'll be surprised how much the game rewards random exploration.
