My copy of Skyrim just arrived this morning (half price offer FTW). I'm new to the Elder Scrolls games so I don't know really know what to do. What race should I be? It's hard to pick!

Time for something totally strange and unhelpful!

Buy a puppy instead.

Yeah, I don't actually own the game...

Your choice of race, for the most part, is purely an aesthetic one. Any race can fill any style of play (of course, some of their special abilities fit certain roles more than others).

Pick one race at random depending on how good you think it looks. Then spend hours on the character creator making that preset character look ugly as hell with the sliders. Proceed to rage and choose another race at random. REPEAT.

In effect you will have trapped yourself in the character creation screen due to indecisiveness. If you can best this, than you are worthy of adventuring through these Nordic lands. May the Nine be your guidance.

If you want to be a warrior: Orc, Redguard, or Nord are good picks
If you want to be a thief/assassin: Khajiit, Argonian and Wood elf are good to get started.
If you want to be a mage: Dark Elf, High elf and Breton are good picks.
Imperials are kind of the jack of all trades race, good starting abilities for anything. That being said you can build any race as any archetype and still do well, they all start with different stat bonuses though.

Depends on what you want to do. Orcs are good for fighting (frenzy is great) the argonian healing power is handy in a pinch, as is water breathing. Bretons magic resistance will make fights with high level mages enjoyable instead of shit. Don't let whether something has darkvision or not alter your choice because there isn't a single dungeon that isn't lit by torches or the like (even if your the first person to enter the dungeon in hundreds of years.)

Id play whatever race you think is awesome. I like argoinans personally. Water breathing yes please. But there is no clear cut "best" choice.

Kill things.

Steal stuff.

Kill things while stealing stuff.

Simple.

Rinse and repeat for the next 20 hours.

If you want to be a mage, pick a Breton or High Elf. Khajit are best for thieves, and Orcs and Nords are best for straight-up hack-and-slash warriors. But really, the only difference the race choice makes is a few resistances (Nords are 50% resistant to cold, Dunmer are 50% resistant to fire, Bretons are 25% resistant to magic) and the racial abilities. Also, if you're an Orc you can get into Orc strongholds without having to do a quest.

Water breathing is a useless ability. Much like poison resistance.

I recommend role playing and making you decisions from there.

Be a Nord dedicated to felling the Tyranny of the Thalmor and the Empire and the freedom of Skyrim.

Be an Imperial Spy putting the pragmatic interests of the Empire first.

Be a Bretonnion fugitive thief from Daggerfall free with the jewels in others pockets and sock drawers.

That's my three characters.

Other suggestions include a Kajit merchant, a wood elf hunter, summoner, a high elf mage. A dark elf assassin.

No problem! ;)

Well, alright, in Oblivion, I played as a Nord, so yeah... Make a character, and stab some peoplez.

I'm thinking Khajiit. And I've given him a mohawk and earrings so he looks like Mr T.

Why yes I AM childish! Thanks for noticing! :p

Want to hit things? Be an Orc.
Want to zap things? Be an Altmer.
Want to steal things? Be a Khajiit.

Your race should reflect your playstyle. At first. When you get to better know the Elder Scrolls world and game mechanics you can mix it up a bit by deliberately mismatching race and class norms (it's much more fun than playing a solid stereotype, but it's best to get some working knowledge first).

when you've finished the intro, take a direction, any direction you want. Keep fighting and walking until you reach the sea or uncrossable mountains... then head back to Riverwood or Whiterun.

Post what happened to you here on your journey.

If you're going to make a character look like Mr T then at least make him a Knight Elf Mohawk.

I usually spend the first 200 hours in games like this going around and collecting stuff to sell until I have more money than I know what to do with(already have well over 100,000 gold) instead of trying to complete the main story. I don't really recommend this play style for someone who just got the game, but do whatever you what because Skyrim does let you choose your own path.

pick one. They're all fun. Actually, if you're new to elder scrolls, play breton, they work well with any play style, so you can figure out what you like most.

Also, I totally want to do something like [a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcbazH6aE2g&feature=channel_video_title"]this[/a] at some point in every city in Skyrim. Why? Because I can.
