Kast, Pinochet apologist and far-right hoodlum, has conceded the election to left-leaning Boric. Votes are still being counted, but the last update I saw was 83% counted and the vote share hadn't shifted from ~55-45 in Boric's favor.

And this is after a large voter suppression attempt by the right wing to keep Boric voters from the polls.

Absolutely crushed.

One of the only benefits of Kissinger remaining alive is that he will have seen this.
As a lot of people might not get this reference, an explanation:

"I don't see why we need to stand by and watch a country go communist due to the irresponsibility of its people. The issues are much too important for the Chilean voters to be left to decide for themselves."

This quote has been attributed to Henry Kissinger just before Nixon's CIA assisted a coup that installed a brutal military junta in Chile led by Augusto Pinochet, which resulted in the death of the country's democratically-elected President and a seventeen-year-long era of political murders and torture. Why? Because that democratically-elected President was part of a leftist coalition that Nixon feared would strengthen Communist power in the Western Hemisphere, and American policy has always been to fight to protect democracy abroad- so long as it votes for who we like.

Yeesh. Not even communists either but just left wing. Yeesh. And then the smug ''We need to destroy Chili FOR the benefit of Chili''.

The more you hear of Kissinger the worse he comes off. I still recall him having a rather solid reputation not too long ago.

Ah, Jose Antonio Kast.

A descendant of Nazis who departed Germany when Naziism fell out of favour after the war. So I'm guessing they didn't have much contrition over their contribution to that 1930s-40s murderfest, and as so often happens passed that attitude to their offspring.

So much for respecting democracy when it’s an inconvenience.

The US and Britain will back murderous dictatorships and corrupt oligarchies and then be shocked, shocked, that left wings politics don't fall out of favor in those areas
Then again the right doesn't seem to be falling out of favor either. Brazil had a murderous dictatorship and now they have a far right president who's openly nostalgic for the time where the government could go and torture any random citizen for the lulz. And that Pinochet's heir was even in a position to run for president does say something.

True, though Bolsonaro only won by having his opponent arrested on false charges, and then having corporate backers running an illegal digital misinformation campaign.

He did but that's kinda worrying in his own right since it means there are powerful forces in the government colluding to put him into power.

Worrying but not surprising. Fascists tend to be very profitable for private businesses short term.

I want to see what a developed nation that's not the Nordic countries or France does with all of that government revenue. I hope the US and other western nations don't coup them for whatever corporate-back reason.

If they implement some ingenious policy solution like Bolsa Familia, this could get very interesting.

But if a republican wins the 2024 election the chance of a western-backed coup increases.

And before you ask, yes, he is related to that Pinochet.
I am confused about that one, picking out a "Pinochet" to speak as a "Kast Voter" would be anti-far right reporting. Now people who saw that segment will associate Kast voters with the name "Pinochet".

Anyway, while this Kast guy sounds like another Trump or Bolsonaro I have no clue about this Boric dude so I am not sure if it's such a good news or not? Let's just hope he manages to reduce wealth inequality in Chile, and ideally not at the expense of economic growth.

Yes, it's a valid point that the BBC journalist knew perfectly well what the impact would be of associating Kast with Pinochet. It's also reasonable as well that they could just leave viewers to make up their own minds - we have to assume there were vox pops for both sides, so balance is done. We can also consider that if this Pinochet knew the BBC were taking interviews, he deliberately sought one to get his opinion out. Whatever, I think this is for the most part completely trivial.

As far as crew-ups go, it's nothing like as bad as allowing Alan Dershowitz to comment on the Ghislaine Maxwell case, where he congratulated the prosecution for not using Virginia Giuffre because she was not a credible witness. Whilst not pointing out that Dershowitz is one of the people accused by Giuffre of screwing minors at Epstein's parties.
