Kinect Will React to Swearing at Dead Space 3

Profuse cursing could become a practical tool.

We've all been there: it's late at night, you're sitting in the dark playing a terrifying horror game, and suddenly something startles you. You need to act fast! It's fight or flight! But for some reason, you're paralyzed - except for the part of your brain that stores swear words. Instead of taking some reasonable action, you spout off a stream of obscenities in a panic.

If the game you were playing was Dead Space 3, your potty mouth may have just saved your life.

Executive producer Steve Papoutsis explains that the new Dead Space will use Kinect integration to listen for vocal reactions from players, and use that feedback to trigger some actions. "We actually have some commands that people will need to figure out," said Papoutsis. "But there are commands where you might be in a certain situation and you might yell a specific expletive and it might behave in a way that you want it to."

The Dead Space series has always tried to minimize intrusive menus, so Kinect integration was a logical next step. "Being able to do certain things without changing the grip on your controller is really advantageous. Add in co-op and now you can do things with simple voice commands like give your partner ammo or items - things that would normally take a couple of extra clicks on the sticks."

It's currently unknown whether players can combine these functions to grief their co-op buddy in-game by swearing at them in real life. Papoutsis did hint that the Kinect could be used to grief your friends, though the specific methods involved will likely be something that you'll have to discover on your own.

The Kinect features may not be major selling points for the game, but it seems like the voice commands will provide some nice surprises for players who already own the device. Let's just hope that this particular feature doesn't find its way to competitive multiplayer games; Xbox Live really doesn't need the encouragement.

Strangely, i can get behind this. Whenever i've used the Kinect for srs gaming (Glaring at Steel Battalion here) I always ended up swearing like a dock worker impaled by a spike.

I've haven't actually sworn out loud when being startled before. I never got that. I do think there's comedy factor to the idea of players getting random or set unfavorable effects stacked on them for swearing out loud in multiplayer.

Whatever, they're free to keep trying and testing ways to make Kinect at least serve some purpose for those who bought into it, the gimmick that it is.

I still find it funny how people first invent new controls and THEN try to find a use for it.

I think it would have been more fun if swearing out loud brought out more enemies.

And that they told no one about this.

cool idea, will fail/suck because it's kinect and the system just doesn't work(unless you are dancing)

however what i want is swearing in games to replace whatever you need to do to pass a QTE, i suck at smashing buttons and wiggling sticks but i can curse with the best of them.

What the fuck are you talking about you fucking arsehole? You wanna give me shit, you little twat, and I'm gonna come over there and shove your fucking controller up your n00b ****** arse!

*Signs out of Xbox Live*

I'm not entirely sure I follow you, old chap. If we have a disagreement, perhaps some form of conflict resolution can be achieved to our mutual satisfaction?

Sorry, couldn't resist! :D

I heard rumors about the next Xbox (720, NeXt or whatever they're calling it) having Kinect built in, and being a straight up requirement for most activities. Meaning it will be on at all times.

Yea, that's cool. Why not have a Video Camera and Microphone powered on at all times in your family's living room, connected to the internet. What could go wrong.

it sounds to me like yelling (Probably not JUST swearing) will result in an action like ducking, diving, or some other similar action that involves instinctual reaction. And short cutting the players instinctual reaction of swearing as a command to PERFORM that action, making the experience actually more immersive, and removing one step between the player and the game. This...this is actually very clever.

Too bad its the first good thing Ive heard about the game.

So. who else opened this story thinking that it would be the exact opposite. you know actually punishing players for swearing at their games/other players, but no.

this game is rewarding people for swearing, and by nature reinforcing that it is ok, and I can just see it when even the less conservative media gets a hold of this. "games might not cause violence, but they do reward swearing" granted I can see where the game is already rated M, but seriously.

Reacting to swearing? Well this easily becomes a fun Xbox game...

If EA markets this well and if Dead Space 3 sells because of this, I will eat my old GPU.

Good luck EA, it's not gonna get you guys your 5 million. But it'll be entertaining seeing you try.

Who cares? The people who will jump on this will always find things to ***** about and this actually sounds amusing enough for me to want to borrow my sisters kinect for a bit and see what it's like (disconnecting from xbox live first though, creepy shit in that agreement).

Lets not pander to the people who won't be happy with the game unless you remove all traces of violence and bad language from it please.

I wonder what happens when you say "fuck this shitty game". Does the game freeze until you apologize to it?

Out of game startles cause in game rush? Totally appropriate. And I see the marketing guys behind the Dante's Inferno stunts have found a way to get their ideas incorporated as gameplay now. Excellent.

I find it even funnier when people invent controls and then release them despite the fact that they don't actually work, in other words, all motion controls ever.

Or that could already be the case and Visceral is misleading us on purpose?

Its fun to think about theese things.
