ULTRA SPOILER: Don't read the thread if you're planning to play the game for the first time!

Okay... I want to talk about the ending, even though I already spoiled myself and I'm still at the half of the game, I really want to talk about it with anyone here that knows and loves the KOTOR games (Or Star Wars games in general) because It seems like.. "fun" to discuss about one of the big shocking reveals in video game history.

So what was your thoughts when Malak revealed Revan's true identity? Which was you, the player character. I didn't noticed it at first because It didn't made any sense, there's no way that my character would be a once Dark Lord. But when I watched the spoiler filled revelation video on YouTube, it finally all made sense for me, like how your character end up waking up in the ship where Bastilla and Revan were fighting, and you the character have no memory of what happened, and the fact that the Jedi Academy accepted you, an adult to train in the Academy, in the lore (I think) they don't usually allow training adults such as your character, but they told you that this is a special case so they head on training you anyway, because of that; "Connection" between you and Bastilla.

You can clearly see afterwards that your character is having a little-to-no effort with mending the force while in training, which is kinda awesome at first because you don't know what happened in the end of the game, even though your character/Revan lost his memory when waking up in the ship, he still has that force power prowess in him so I understood late that it's the reason why your character in the first place was so good at manipulating force stuff from the start.

It's funny to think also if you set your character to a female, Oh my glob Dark Lord Revan is a SHE! I laughed at some of the revelation videos, when I say videos at first I didn't understand what's happening, because the first video I watched got cut in the end where Revan took off his mask.

I can think up more situations when It all makes sense (That your character is Revan) even if I'm still at Kashyyyk in my game.

This is the reason why Bioware is great at storytelling, they usually have a SEVERE TWIST near the end, although we got other greats too like Mass Effect and Dragon Age, it can't live up to the name of KOTOR's clever writing, it's going to be my 2nd best Bioware game (First being Mass Effect 2, because let's face it. The Suicide Mission was a blast to see unfolding.)

And this is why the phrase, "Use your enemies" makes sense.

Yeah I've played the crap out of KOTOR but haven't really had the heart to sit through it recently. I've tried a couple of times but always end up moving on once the nostalgia wears off around 10 hours in. That being said I still remember my reaction to that reveal the first time through. It was the first time a game ever really surprised me.

"Holy shit no Way! wait..they actually really telegraphed that...I should have seen that coming. I feel a little stupid now....oh well let's go kill Malik and get Bastila back."

Yes I was a female goody-two shoes Jedi type (my first play though of these types of games is as blind as possible where I make choices based on what I like to think I would actually do and I always end up being super good)so after completion I immediately restarted as a cruel male badass just to see the differences.

I was so annoyed with the game by that point I think I rolled my eyes at the reveal more than anything, although it would be churlish to suggest it wasn't a fun plot twist. I ran into a bunch of bugs, bad writing, and hilarious script armor moments down the stretch that were absolutely immersion shattering, so I wasn't in any mood to be entertained by a "gotcha" moment, and I've long argued that the combat and engine in KOTOR is absolutely dreadful.

I dunno. It's obviously a solid game, but it's one of those games I've always felt was praised way, way more than it deserved, and has its flaws glossed over by enthusiasts in rose colored glasses. Most of Bioware's maligned modern offerings are far better games. Better written, better engines...just...better.

KOTOR 2 was pretty good though. Once you got it fixed up.

I actually love the turn based combat even though it's sometimes wonky as hell. It's kinda like Neverwinter Nights since it was based off that, In a kind of way lol

It's exactly like Neverwinter Nights, which is probably why I hated it so much. If you'd told me going into Neverwinter Nights that it was going to make me nostalgic for the Infinity Engine I'd have slapped your face, but that's how it turned out.

I appreciate how well foreshadowed it was, with the dreams and Bastilla yammering on about connections and all, but by that point I was so sick of the game that no amount of twist was going to get me back into it.

Also, it kind of "ruined" Revan. They spend the whole game telling you what a genius badass he was, then he turns out to be the gormless, expressionless mute you've been controlling all game. It's hard to be impressed.

My experience was starting the game, almost immediately having a cutscene where Revan was fighting Jedi where they were very suspiciously obscuring his face and seemed to be from a first person perspective and thinking:

"Oh so that's why Revan is a big deal. I'm Revan."

Maybe if I hadn't played KotoR 1 late I might have not discovered the twist before the tutorial was over. It's still a pretty cool twist and I like all the references made to it throughout the game. It works well with the levelling mechanics and it's a new idea as far as twists go.

But in other ways it really doesn't gell that well. Unlike Jade Empire the new insight you get into a lot of characters motivations is that they were really stupid and deserve to die for it. Messing around with peoples sense of identity isn't really an established force thing or a big part of the themes of the franchise (but as plus, identity twists themselves are). It kind of meshes with the lightside/darkside thing in that your personality is reforming, but it also doesn't make sense because the game doesn't encourage you to ramp up or go grey. There's basically lightside playthroughs and darkside playthroughs and anything else doesn't make sense.

And when Revan has been going around killing, exploiting and destroying everything he touches (which you can do plenty over before the opening world is finished) the Jedi council saying 'lets retrain him in the ways of the force' really wasn't smart

I unfortunately got spoiled about the big reveal when I got the game (stupid little brother, and stupid good memory for these kind of things), so it didn't have a big impact. But yeah, I find it amazing how much they foreshadow throughout the game while still being cryptic enough not to give away the twist.

OT: When I first saw it unfold, I had a reaction that was somewhere between Troll 2's, "Oh my gooooooooooooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD!" and Luke's No from The Empire Strikes Back. They got the reaction they wanted I suppose.

Voice actorless does not mean voiceless. By that logic, every main character in the Fallout and Elder Scrolls series are dumb.

By the time of the big reveal I had already guessed at it. Was still fun though. Then getting to kill off the Jedi followers with you at the temple was amazing. Shame HK-47 was not there to mock them.

I was so annoyed with the game by that point I think I rolled my eyes at the reveal more than anything, although it would be churlish to suggest it wasn't a fun plot twist. I ran into a bunch of bugs, bad writing, and hilarious script armor moments down the stretch that were absolutely immersion shattering, so I wasn't in any mood to be entertained by a "gotcha" moment, and I've long argued that the combat and engine in KOTOR is absolutely dreadful.

I dunno. It's obviously a solid game, but it's one of those games I've always felt was praised way, way more than it deserved, and has its flaws glossed over by enthusiasts in rose colored glasses. Most of Bioware's maligned modern offerings are far better games. Better written, better engines...just...better.

KOTOR 2 was pretty good though. Once you got it fixed up.

Pretty much this. I had a decent enough time with the game, but didn't think it was as great as everyone made it out to be. Really my favorite thing about the game was how hilariously evil the dark-sider conversation choices were. Like, CARTOONISHLY evil. That made the game actually fun to play just to see "What's this crazy bastard going to do next?" In particular I love the way you can get both those farmer families to absolutely slaughter one another with no survivors. >

As for the revelation itself, they loaded the game with plenty of foreshadowing to give it away when you think about it. And when the revelation does come, it shows a little montage of all the foreshadowing that gives it away. I wasn't fully aware that I'd turn out to be Revan, but I had a pretty strong feeling that that's how it would turn out before it was officially revealed.

I need to finish KoTOR first before heading to KOTOR 2, but since I'm such a dweeb and spoiled myself from the HUGE twist, I need to play other games first to completely forget about the revelation.

Or just don't give a shyte and head on playing, maybe I will forget about it eventually. I don't know

Sorry my friend, but that's not going to work. You're not just going to "forget" the major plot-point of a story. That's like playing through one of the Portal games and then not touching it for a few months and trying to play through it again. No matter how much time passes, you're still going to remember the solution to every puzzle once you get into the room.

I'd suggest playing through it though. The final confrontation against Malak is a fun enough climactic battle. And if you're a dark sider, you can find a secret room on the Star Forge that gives you the Dark Lord Revan armor that you see in the cutscenes...the black hooded cloak, the mask, everything. Makes you feel like a REAL badass and gives you some great stat buffs.
