Alright I'm pretty sure you guys remember the whole Kony 2012 thing, and it's got me wondering, what do you guys think was the biggest flop-movements of 2012.

In my opinion it was, as the title says, Kony 2012. This movement basically showed how easy it was to siphon money from the public for a cause that they do not even do research into, and when everything starts to fall apart, none of the "activists" spoke of it any longer.

I missed the whole Kony thing. Although I did get a giggle out of daft folk being separated from their money.

I don't know of any other "movements". Seems Kony was spread around Facebook and I don't have an account so I only heard about that when I clicked on a thread about it here by accident after it was all over.

Well, apart from the whole "retake Mass Effect" thing that went on..... Couldn't fucking miss that.

Whatever happened to the money from Kony 2012 anyway?

The last thing i heard was that the guy who ran the charity was so happy to get all this money he started running out in the street masturbating, or something along those lines.

Technically it was from a combination of heat exhaustion and stress at the publicity. I assume the money went to the cause, whatever the hell that meant at the time.

Sad really, t'was a respected cause before they went to go viral so that they could crash and burn.

hahaha, those were my exact thoughts. People have already gone back to thinking only of themselves.

Well, he can't have gotten that much money, if he couldn't afford hookers.

I heard rates for a good hooker have skyrocketed lately, the the public masturbation was probably as much out of stress after finding out about the prices

It took 7 posts for this thread to convert completely into a public masturbation discussion. I am so proud of you guys.

OWS.

Bunch of hipsters on their iPads and coming up in their 1-2 year old Bentley's complaining that other people have more money than them and they're suffering. Maybe you'd suffer less if you shoved the iPad where the sun don't shine.

Third party showing in the elections. A measly 5% of the popular vote for any third party would have gotten matching campaign funds for 2016. Instead we getting the privilege of voting for parties more interested in the status quo.

The Kony 2012 thing was an unfortunate case of an otherwise very admirable cause (motivating Ugandan authorities to capture Joseph Kony) being dragged down by the media's attention on the personal failings of its adherents (the fact that some of the charity money was probably used for bribes, and the masturbation thing).

It was really kind of stupid to watch. On the first day, everyone's talking about Kony and how he really should be caught. On the second day, everyone's gossiping about the fact that the guy who made the video was a fundamentalist Christian or whatever, and a month later he's caught masturbating in public and then that's all everybody talks about, and we're not paying attention to the guy who enslaves children to use as cannon fodder and prostitutes.

He is literally worse than the bad guy from Far Cry 3, and he actually exists, and somehow we forgot that because we're all headline-addicted scandal whores.

Anyway. I would say the Kony 2012, but I can give a regional example and point to the Australian federal government's hung parliament, which was heralded by several commenters in 2010 as bringing the possibility for discussion of more diverse policy issues into the federal arena. Everyone was talking about how this was going to revitalise Australian political discussion.

Unfortunately, the prime minister has the charisma of a 2x4 and the leader of the opposition is only good at making other people look worse than he is, so instead 2012 was a year of some of the most trivial, unnecessary, irrelevant, sometimes wildly illogical political shit-throwing that I have ever seen from an army of monkeys in expensive suits.

You're incredibly generalizing Occupy Wall Street. Also OWS failed be abuse there wasn't any leadership in the movement, not exactly a flop like kony because that lasted less than a week.

Respected? Fuck no.

Kony hasn't been a problem in Uganda in years. Last reports were that he was either dead or stuck in the congo with only a few dozen loyal soldiers not to mention it was proven that the money went to the dipshit behind it and not to any actual use in Uganda.

Hell, even the Ugandan Government was pissed at the video for being a massive scam.
If the Ugandans of all people were pissed, you KNOW it had to have been a good scam. They're pissed they didn't think of it.

Occupy Wall Street comes to mind. Stupid and ignorant on all levels.

Also the 2012 Doomsday ruckus was obviously a flop. Lol that made me laugh.

But technically the Retake Mass Effect wasn't a flop as it achieved their goal of having the ending changed.

Didn't call it a flop, I was saying it's the only "movement" i'd heard about this year.

You do realize KONY 2012 was a scam in the first place, right? Guy hadn't been seen in the country for months and is presumed dead.

On the other hand, she then did that awesome speech talking about how the world was going to end due to the inevitable rise of K-Pop. That was pretty awesome.
OT: I don't know, I don't pay attention to news much. I guess perhaps those people who decided to try and live in Westminster for a week? Not sure what happened to them, after a while they just kinda fell off the radar.
