Lack of immersive/good games with protagonists who are not young white males

Extra Credits has been doing their last few episodes about divesity in games, and since then I have come to realize that there is a major trend in the gaming industry; if there is not a create your character function in the beginning of the game(such as with many rpgs), most likely the main character or protagonist is gonna be a white, heterosexual, male, with no religous view, and his age will very directly with the market the company is trying to appeal to. I've been scratching my head trying to think of a few games(good games hopefully but cant be to picky) that don't conform to this trend.
1. Portal....

2....

Nope nothin.

Anywho, can anyone think of some other games that include protagonists that don't fit into the previously described catagory? (I'm only 17, so if there was a time of complete equality(noth the best word) in games in the past, i feel sad i missed it)
Also, any ideas as to why this may be? Are companies just trying to create a game with what they view as "safe immersion", something easily related able? Seems like if we... people want this to be an art, we might wanna try something with a few more different perpectives. (perspective being the fundemental concept of art)

There are plenty of games - Saint's Row, Fallout 3, Oblivion, and so on - that let you create custom characters. Would you count those?

If not, Mirror's Edge and Armed Assault 2 immediately spring to mind. There are probably plenty out there - others will think of more for the list.

The Master Chief is never explicitly stated to be white in the games. (discounting any EU stuff)

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Tidus from FFX definitely has an Asian facial bone structure.

Ramirez from Modern Warfare.

The worms from Worms Armageddon.

Jade from BG&E, and presumably the upcoming BG&E 2

Arguably Niko Belic from GTA 4, as you talk about diverse background/experience. I know he's white, but as an immigrant, he's initially about as relatable to the white heterosexual demograph as a Tibetan's monk life experience is to an American from an Asian family who has lived in Ohio his entire life.

Metroid, Beyond Good and Evil and Phantasmagoria come to mind when looking for female protagonists.

Or any game with a non-human lead, like the Crash Bandicoot series, Sly series, Ratchet and Clank series, Donkey Kong, Banjo & Kazooie, Conker, Gex, James Pond etc. Of course most of these are platform games, and of a different era.

For recent titles, well Sackboy from LBP, Super Meat Boy, and probably quite a few games from indie developers.
