I just finished setting up a LAN party for tomorrow, but none of us have quite settled on any games. I suggested something, but then someone said no, then they did and I said no, etc. It is a classic LAN party, so most of the people are bringing '98 PCs that aren't exactly spec'd for Crysis or something of that graphic intensity. So, I thought I might as well ask some of you guys for some ideas.
Any are welcome and thanks in advance.

They would probably want to play some RTS at some point, and possibly a tournament-ish shooter (more tactical like).

C&C generals. Imo, the last good and addicting C&C game.
Dawn of War, everyone chooses a different race at random and sees who comes out on top.
Counter strike... 1.6 only, I hate Source.

Then I would definitely say Starcraft. If you have WC3 I love DotA as a LAN game. Diablo as well if you want to stick with Blizzard games.

As Lukeje said, Unreal Tourny would be good. Maybe even Team Fortress 2?

Dawn of War, Left 4 Dead, Counterstrike probably if you're into that sort of thing, DotA (WC3 TFT map).

You could try a Total War game, I'm not sure how successful that'd be/if it would even work. I don't even know if you can do it, but it'd be pretty awesome if you could ;o

CS or UT would probably work on older computers if you want shooters. For RTS, do either StarCraft or maybe Age of Empires II if you're going to be there for a while.

Hehe, you must be alone in that opinion. Most people hated Generals.

Left 4 Dead. It does not disappoint.
Can it be played on 98 PCs?

Yes, I could see these games going over well for the general populace.

I can't help myself when I have the ability to put a unit in a car and drive into my friends base and take out his power stations...win..That and the 'Rebel ambush' with GLA demo was so amazingly cheese. You can make them appear right in his base and make them self detonate causing mass damage... But we all have a good time Generals everytime we play it. Something ridiculous and awesome always seems to happen.

Most of what I'd have said has been said (Starcraft, Counter Strike, Unreal Tournament, etc), but I offer one that I myself have used at LAN parties to fantastic results:

Homeworld.

It was ALWAYS a hit at my LAN parties. We'd allow for open diplomacy (You can change teams on the fly) and we'd go at 'er! Oh man it was crazy fun. The game is awesome as it is, but multiplayer with your buddies is sweet.

EDIT: And Call of Duty...the first one. Great game.
