I've noticed that over time, more and more sequels and remakes of franchises come out. This goes for everything - movies and games especially.

My question to you, instead of "games you think deserve a sequel" or "sequels that would ruin a game," or "Games that need to be remade..."

Is this:

What if the games industry had only what was already conceived of to work with? And everything, and I mean EVERYTHING had to be a remake or a sequel.

How long do you think it would be interesting to the consumer? 10 years? 5 years? Forever? Not at all?

Imagine a remake of Doom, with the Id tech 5 engine. Imagine a remake of Unreal, with the Unreal 4 engine. Age of Empires 5 looking more beautiful than the Dawn of War series. The Sims, Simcity, forever improved and perfected. Rollercoaster Tycoon, the original, made just like the original, but with better graphics?

Mariokart, with a physics engine?

Etc, etc, etc.

Keep in mind that this would have franchises that were all-but-dead, yet you love, returning for a long, long time - (Beyond Good and Evil, Okami, Descent, MDK, etc).

A new Wing Commander? Years of new Wing Commanders?

Etc, etc.

Mechwarriors?
Guitar Hero. Rock Band.

New ideas are sometimes not the best. I know this forum feels mixed about DJ Hero. Mixed about AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!!! -- A Reckless Disregard for Gravity. (http://www.dejobaan.com/aaaaa/)

How long would the world still be interested in Fallout? 100 years? World of Warcraft 5? Etc, etc.

Tell me, fellow escapists:

How long do you think you could play through a remake or sequel to the same game again.
A Final Fantasy 7, remade 7 times, to look 7 times better?

I wanna know.

So you're telling us to imagine a world where every idea possible has been thought up and put into video game form? And that everything from then on would inevitably be a sequel, remake, or at best, a re-imagining?

Dude, I think you melted a piece of my brain.

And to answer your question; life would be hell. Video games would become boring, Dick Cheney would take over the world, and Yahtzee would pretty much hang himself.

It is interetsing. Fuck that stupid yahtzee way of thinking. If the game is entertaining I don't care if it's a sequel or a remake. If it isn't, I'll still find a way for it to be entertaining because I enjoy every game. Oh yes, I said it. There are some games that I don't like but those are mostly tedious casual games like Plants vs. Zombies.
Republic Commando and Freelancer need sequels COME ON PEOPLE, I'M WAITING HERE.

would be cool for a bit, but in the end developers might just tack on the sequels name and make it a completely different identity.

I mean, look at Far Cry 2 or CoD4

I still think i have replied to about nine threads about this, but WHY THE FUCK did they keep making THPS games, they sucked after about 2, as they were the same grind (no pun) over and over again, and did no one else get pissed off?
Also, where is the sequel to games like Rogue trouper and and also i want a remake of texas chainsaw massacre for the 2600, make it better this time... toss bags...

How does one "pretty much" hang themself, either you do or you don't, there is no middle ground or halfway point in that situation.

Actually there are people who routinely "pretty much" hang themselves, although they use silk and special ropes that don't chafe.

Oops, I kinda lost track in the middle of writing that sentence. My bad, pretty much.

Kind of my point.

How long would it be interesting to play the same thing? 5 times? 10 times? 50 times? 5000 times? I should have made this a poll.

I think if MMO's came out with only GOOD sequels and didn't nerf the crap out of them so they actually had a decent difficult curve (I'm looking at you WoW), I would probably be able to play through all of the sequels for years and years.
FPS games...eh not so much...

A world of only remakes and sequels? Sounds quite like a form of gamer hell. That'd mean we'd be out of the fun innovations that we see from time to time, like SMG's unique gravity controls, and we'd have to end up retreading the same old ground. Dear gods, why? The innovations that come out every one in a while are one of the reasons I'm still gaming. While some sequels are definitely and genuinely good, and a few remakes are worth it, but to endlessly see retreads sounds more like a punishment than anything else.

Final Fantasy 7 is the only exception that they could get away with it due to it is prob the best game ever made. Every one and there mother wants a remake of that just depends on the game really. Now other games no they could not get away with it.

Well it seems to have kept gamers occupied for the last couple of years so the argument is built on flawed premisis.

Corporatism and loyalty to stockholders are mostly to blame for it. Every E3 more and more sequels are announced because originality means risk. You've heard it before.

I pray for another collapse

Minus a few special cases, thats pretty much the situation we're in now. That seems to be a staple of this decade (the 00's?). We've all run out of ideas, so we're just making sequels, remakes and rip offs. It'll die down eventually.

If the world your talking about existed, I doubt there'd be much difference. Change scares people.

I know Yahtzee would do something terrible. I don't know, start gunning random passersby down in the street or something.

It would eventually get boring. There's only so much you can do with the same thing. Give it 2, maybe 3 years and people would be begging for something fresh. Yeah, games would still be playable, but the number of gamers, especially dedicated gamers, would shrink dramatically. Final fantasy and other masters of making the sequels completely unrelated to previous games while still maintaining the feel of the old games would probably last a bit longer.

This says it all. Also, if 10 heavy rain games come out I will hang myself.
