I recently got a brand new hard drive for my laptop. The last one had failed so I replaced it. Today my laptop started making this strange rattling noise at random points. The noise comes from the area of the cooling fan and almost sounds like something is bouncing around inside. The noise lasts only a few seconds & then stops and the laptop works just fine the whole time. Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong with it?

The fan has become dislodged and is hitting something. Your best bet is probably to take it to a hardware shop or computer repair shop because trying to relocate a tiny fan within the heavily compacted bowels of a laptop is just unpleasant.

It may need to be dusted on the inside. Believe it or not, dust can affect a computer's performance and, if left alone, can damage the fan or filter system, causing the motherboard to overheat.

The best thing your can do is to contact you manufacture for support. Seeing as you still (you should) have warranty they will gladly give you...Erm,professional advice.

If they believe the problem is serious and requires hardware maintenance, the may/may not charge you for it, depending on what your warranty covers.

But yea, it may just be dust.
