So me and my friends have just started playing lol(already played rofl and lmao).

So this seems to be a game I need to study a little to be good at. Got any tips, strategies, good champion pair ups or helpful websites or any other advice for me?

I bought chogath the bug man who eats people and I quite like him so far. Though I worry he will be a target in pvp due to people not wanting him to get his stacks. I'm thinking I will also save up and buy xelrath the Mage ascendant. Since he's f2p right now and I like him.

Thanks in advance for any help.

When your playing a DOTA clone, the best way to become good is through experience. You have to be familiar with all the Champions and what they are capable of. you can also watch pro players stream and watch tournaments to see various strategies and what Champions you might want to purchase.

Right now the most important thing is to do is work on last hitting effectively, don't mindlessly auto attack creeps, as this pushes the lane to the other team's tower which exposes you to ganks (when enemy champions organize to kill you). check websites like mobafire.com for ways to build your Champion. Make sure you have decen map awareness as this is 90% of the game. You should know where the enemy is and should always be near allies. Never fight the enemy without a number advantage.

Cho Gath is a strong champ, so I would recommend learning him. If you are looking for good guides, solomid.net is your best bet as most of the guides are done by pros.

Probably the best advice I can give is KILL MINIONS. Killing champions gives you money but can be risky, killing minions gives you money and is much easier, especially with a champion like Cho.

If you're new to the MOBA genre ("DoTA-Clone" is a good practical term, but technically, Aeon of Strife did it first in Starcraft), I won't lie to you: Learning to play can be utterly PAINFUL.
Mostly because MOBA games have a steep learning curve, and are home to one of the WORST ONLINE COMMUNITIES IN EXISTENCE.

No. I do not exaggerate with that last statement. LoL games (following in DotA's footsteps) are grief-tastic, and the game has a HUGE population, most of whom are mediocre or awful at the game.

If you cannot learn to tolerate absolute fuckhole-players, you won't enjoy your brief stay in MOBA-country.

However, not all is lost. Playing with friends is a good first step.
Learn what roles you like to play, and try to understand why. Learn the lingo, and why it's important.

DotA and (to a kinder extent: LoL), are incredibly difficult games to "master".

For League of Legends specifically: If you're new, I suggest to "SAVE YOUR INFLUENCE POINTS".
Play a few rotations of champs to find not only what type you like to play, but to get a better selection of champs to choose from amongst that type.

Splurging on a champ that seems cool just because it's a new experience, is misleading and often problematic due to the intense grind required to purchase any champ past tier 2 (and as you gain levels, your IP gains per gain decrease, so the grind just becomes worse and worse).

Save your IP for champs you want access to at all times. Thankfully, there are good staple champs at the 450 IP range, and of course, Tristana is free if you like League on Facebook.

Never waste time you should be killing minions with the last hit (to give you gold) ALWAYS, or be on your ways to do this, or in a fight. Otherwise you are wasting time, gold, and exp. Keep an eye on zoning, and ALWAYS check the minimap every so often. Its vital. This combines with warding. Very usefull skill. When you can see where your enemy is all the time you can single them out and just REAP kills. Get wards down in awesome places and watch for loners, or junglers. Then jump em with 3 of you. Get dragon often, it gets to the point where a little bit of EXP or gold can give you an egde. NEVER go solo in the jungle or deep into a lane. Unless you need to, or its a desperate gamble. Going solo is a good way to die, if the enemy has sense. Get wards, keep an eye on time wastage, and in team fights know your role. Thats all i can offer.

Items that reward with kills are rubbish. Trust me. (I mean only, the sword of the occult, the mejai soul stealer and leviathon, dont use them unless you are dominating so hard its not even funny.)

Prehaps you were laughing at me, not with me.

Good tips so far.

Get competent with Dota or Hon and you will come back as a very good LoL player.

Or just stick with Dota. Or join the Hon master race.

So far my experience with the community has been positive. I've yet to cop a single insult and I've played 10+ games.

That's encouraging, but it wasn't my experience at all.
I'm actually taking a break from LoL over my winter break because I put up with whiny/griefing assholes for several solid months prior and didn't want to deal with it anymore.

One of my mates even told everyone in our first pvp game that us three were noobs and that the other team was going to win. The other guys on our team didn't get mad at all. And the other team even told us we didn't do too bad after we lost.

Honestly, the best advice when starting out is to know where you have to be. I've seen so many teams fall apart because none of their players knew which lane they had to be in.

Unfortunately I don't really think there's a way to fast-track learning the game. You just need time, patience and practice.

I think "SPIN TO WIN" is pretty legit advice.

There isn't much advice to give, knowledge will come in time as you learn the champions and their abilities, and even then you may still be unsure how to counter pick, or what to build, so my main advice would be to stick with it and watch streams.

As a little side tip I feel is important, if you're fed; regurgitate it to your team. Help them farm, gank, push their lane etc. So many times do I see a fed Nasus or some shit think he's baws and 1v1 everyone, only to die constantly and slowly feed their team to the point that they can easily win him over in a teamfight, leaving you with no uber DPS because Nasus starved you of every kill for his scoreboard ego.

Cho'gath has so much health people tend to attack the squishy targets first anyway. Watch out if someone starts building Mandred's Bloodrzor though... that will ruin your day ;)

Best tip I can give, is don't feed. Play cautiously to start with, so you don't die too much.

Enjoy the community now... as you level up people become progressively more obsessed about victory, and their sense of fun is throttled to the point where everyone becomes the angry German kid. Personally after I hit 30 I only play against AI whilst dabbling in Dominion... just get tired of idiots calling other idiots idiots with me being an idiot too.

LOL is fun and the community is decent (for a DOTA game, still not saying much but i digress.) as a suggestion id say play cho gath ALOT personally i wouldnt suggest starting out with a hero like him (i find him hard but maybe its just me). pick a hero thats easy to pick up relatively quickly like katarina, garen,,morde, or ashe. also try to learn what kind of hero you like to play like support, tank, etc.

for example my personal favorite class is support so i main zilean, i also play a skarner like a combat support making sure any runners dont get away and i pull em back

Protip1: Always type "mid or i feed" during champion select.
