Let me tell you all a story about the great Dimebag Darrel. Of Pantera and Damageplan fame, Dimebag was a strong guitarist honored many times over for his skill and original style.
Dimebag Darrell was about as strong as a heavy metal guitarist gets. Dimebag was killed onstage on December 8th 2004 while performing with Damageplan at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus, Ohio. The gunman (Nathan Gale) suffered from Paranoid Schizophrenia. At first it was widely believed that the gunman thought that Dime had been stealing his songs, and that drove him to do what he did, but as it turns out his condition caused him to believe that Dimebag's band Pantera could read his mind and was laughing at him, this drove Gale to shoot Dimebag at his performance in the Alrosa Village. The gunman fired five shots at Dime, one hitting him in the head killing him instantly. The gunman continues to open fire upon the crowd and members of Dime's band and crew, as well as club security. Gale killed 3 others in the firestorm, and wounded a further 7. Jeff "Mayhem" Thompson (band's head of security) was killed tackling Gale, as was Alrosa Villa employee Erin Halk. Audience member Nathan Bray was shot while trying to perform CPR on Dimebag and Mayhem. Damageplan drum technician John "Kat" Brooks was shot three times as he attempted to get the gun away from Gale, but was Overpowered and taken hostage in a headlock position. Tour manager Chris Paluska was also injured. Five police officers came in the front entrance, led by Officer Rick Crum, and moved toward the stage. Officer James D. Niggemeyer came in through the back door, behind the stage. Gale only saw the officers in front of the stage; he never saw Officer Niggemeyer who was armed with a 12 gauge Remington 870 shotgun. He approached Gale from the opposite side of the stage to avoid hitting the hostage - and fired a single shot, striking Gale in the face with 8 of the 9 buckshot pellets. Gale was found to have 35 rounds of ammunition remaining.
Much of this FP was taken from the information held on Wikipedia regarding Dimebag's death. The incident is well-documented so if anyone would like to read up on it, there are many sources of information on the subject, some of which perhaps more credible than Wikipedia, but Wikipedia is convenient so i use it as my primary source of information. Sorry about any minor inaccuracies.
Moving on to more of the opinion bit, during the course of my research i came across a rather offensive article cited in this opposing article (http://www.knac.com/article.asp?ArticleID=3412&StartTime=12%2F14%2F2004+12%3A12%3A37+PM)
I have since sent the writer of the hate letter, an angry email of my own, and i kinda wanna know what you all think about this, and the death of Dimebag Darrell.
Music lost one of it's greats, and hes strumming the Charvel Hybrid VH2 that Eddie Van Halen laid in his coffin when he was buried in heaven. we miss you dime.
