Giovanni,
its kind of sad how he's the last gym leader and yet my Charizard can lay waste to everything in his gym by the time I get to him.

I only had trouble with whitney in gold, not soulsilver (those were the ones I owned) and jasmine has always been the easiest gym leader ever, for me. My least favorite is Clair, in SS because she was so hard to get to, and she was the only one I couldn't beat on my first try.

Brock in Pokemon Yellow. You start out with Pikachu against his bloody rock Pokemon. I remember that one time, I had leveled Pikachu to lvl 20 by the time I had taken him out.
brock is also weaker in yellow,
and you can only catch a manky that early in yellow which learns fighting moves early(also only in yellow)
I think its level 9 where he learns a fighting move.

Well when I fought Whitney it was back when I for some reason had to have a team of all the same sex. Why I dunno. As usual the starter pokemon is usually a male. So by the time I got to Whintey I had a full team of male pokemon so yeah.

Least favourite for me is Brock. As if you pick Charmander you will not enjoy fighting him as there is a lack of any decent pokemon to use against him. All other gyms leaders have some pokemon you can get just for the fight but for Brock there is none. I can't think of a single gym leader out of the games I have played besides Brock where you can be penalized so much for picking a different type. Although I have only played first 3 gens + Firered. Although don't get me started on fighting him in Pokemon Yellow.

Also there are the gym leaders who put elaborate puzzles in their gyms for no purpose other than annoying my nine year old self. I'm looking at you and your teleporters Sabrina.

Yeah, admittedly the time Pikachu got to lvl 20 was my first play through.
However, I've only twice came across manky before I'd beaten Brock.
my first playthrough of yellow(I wish I hadnt sold my copy T_T) I used a butterfree and rattata to take down brock,
they killed the first guy, and weakend brock enough for pikachu to take the rock snake thing down (its been a while since ive played a pokemon game)

Whitney has always been a love-hate relationship for me. She's a challenge, but certainly not impossible. The secret lies in Supersonic and Stun Spore ;). More often than not, the Miltank ends up killing itself. As for Morty and his Gangar, train a Noctowl. The Noctowl wrecks it so quickly it isn't funny. A Scyther is a good substitute as well, as it has Pursuit as well as a superpowered attack stat.

The resources are available for you to destroy all of the Gym leaders.

Except for Claire. That ***** just pisses me off. I needed to go catch a Lapras just to beat her the first time.

"GO SWINUB!"

Gahhhhh. Terrible memories of Claire.

Lt. Surge. Because he's a coward, hiding behind his bins as if he's afraid of a challenge. Some gyms test your intelligence before you challenge the leader, Surge's gym just tests you blind luck.

I've studied the RNG for Surge's gym, and sometimes it's impossible to get the switchess on the first try. It sometimes chooses an unreachable, so you have to find the first switch and then fail to reset the switches to a winnable position.

I always hated Brock because I loved picking the fire type and it made fighting him and his gym members very difficult

Whitney and Erika, because they were both so freaking annoying (personality wise)! And piss easy, all you need for Erika is a nice fire pokemon (usually Charmeleon) and a nice bird pokemon (Pidgeotto or Fearow) as for Whitney all you need to do is level a party 3 or 4 non rock/ground types up to level 20 or so and she'll go down no problems.

Typhlosion loses to Steelix? That should be one of the easiest fights in the game if you have a good Fire type with a special attack. Steelix has obscene phys. defense, but its Special defense is barely worth mentioning.
It doesn't help that her bloody Magnemite either paralyze him, soften him up, or if they get a critical hit, kill it.

And then if THAT fails, the attack will miss, Steelix will go first, or it'll endure the first hit and MURDER me with one of it's moves.

Plus, there's the second Magnemite that goes around after the Steelix. Which almost ALWAYS takes out whatever isn't already down for the count.
Still. If your Cyndaquil is a Typhlosion, that means it's already at level 36, which means it knows Lava Plume - and given Typhlosion's above-average speed and pretty beastly Special Attack, it should be able to 1shot the Magnemites. It's true that if Steelix survives and hits it with an EQ it's probably sunk, but in that case all you do is switch to one of your other guys when she sends in Steelix, soften it up enough so that Typhlosion can come in and finish the fight in one blow.
I picked Chikorita for my SoulSilver game, so I just used a Magmar at level 30. It has a beast of an Attack value, so their high Defense was basically neutralised. Four Fire Punches later - it took two to beat the Steelix - and Jasmine was down for the count. I didn't even lose the Magmar, although Steelix took it down to 3 HP. Still, it counts.

On topic: Tate and Liza. That damned Claydol was the death of my team many a time.

Am I the only one who absolutely hated having to go against the flying gym leader in Ruby and Sapphire? first birds were relatively easy but then she took out altaria who for some reason wasn't weak against electricity and had earthquake AND aerial ace to destroy it. I always had to grind a little to beat her.

After the first play through of the original Gold I learned to get at least one female pokemon that could take care of Miltank.

This reminds me. I need to find my copy of the game. I haven't played any pokemon games in ages.
the last time I played it was with blue, and that was to get mew(which I actually found a glitch that works)

I was thinking about buying either that soul silver or black though,
any suggestions people?

For anyone who said brock, the simplest thing was to catch a mankey in that small patch of grass near viridian city where you walk to go to the elite four and indigo plateau. Where you have to stop and show everyone one of those checkers your badge that you can go forward.

SIDE NOTE: that was always pointless, obviously you have all eight badges, or should after the first guy stops you. Its not like you can go very far anyways once you get to the area you have to surf on.

Black wont be out for a while in the US (though I'm not sure where you live) so you'd have to import that Japanese version, whihc ocmes out in... September? I'd jsut get soul silver and play it now to be happy. the US and most other markets wont get it till 2011 anyway.
