i myself the frist couple times playing left 4 dead i have wanderd how did the infection start?
than my friend said cant you see? chuck norris got aids.... but seriouly how did it start?

Who cares? A zombie is a zombie. It doesn't really matter how they got to be that way. Some games come up with the most convoluted explanations (i.e. Dead Rising. Something about bees and zombie cows or something?) that it just isn't worth the time anymore. I commend Left 4 Dead for being ambiguous.

It's some sort of rabies virus similar to 28 Days Later, in that all the zombies just go batnuts insane and beat the living hell out of any person that isn't infected.
The whole mutated infected is just the virus strain mutating certain hosts... certain hosts all wearing the same clothes.
Basically you never really find out about the virus, you just run like hell from the zombie infected.
