Legacy of Kain on Steam :D What would you want to see in Digital Distribution format?

Sort of two threads into one, since I doubt LoK would garner enough attention on it's own, and I wanted to make a thread about DD anyway.

So, Legacy of Kain is on Steam now - Soul Reaver, Soul Reaver 2, and Defiance were added there today 10$/?10/£7 each. That's a pretty solid lineup =) I actually prefer them on GOG, though, not to mention they are cheaper there. But at any rate, I won't mourn the fact the series is getting more exposure.

With that out of the way, I'm one of those guys who likes DD. I don't need to go into why, as the thread is not about that, nor do I want it to be. It's about what would you like to see on a DD platform - could be Steam, could be GOG, could be whatever, could just be a theoretical platform, doesn't matter.

I'd love to see Freelancer somewhere there. It's a brilliant game and I'd rather not lug the disc with me. Also, more exposure and all that. I would also love to see System Shock (1 and or 2, preferably both), as well as Grim Fandango. And I don't know why Worms Armageddon/World Party isn't anywhere yet - the former was a pre-order bonus for Revolution on Steam, so clearly it can be released there, I don't know why it wasn't.

here's a link to the first game on gog by the way, and its only half as expensive as the steam version and is most likely better than the steam version.

anyway i have no idea why steam is doing this now, they arent offering any better deals which is what they usually do and their product is undoubtedly worse considering the drm and such.

now as for what I would like in digital download, well I prefer gog honestly as they do not have any drm what so ever, also the fact that they re program games for modern systems is cool as all hell.

also I have gotten at least 14 free games from them, which is just godlike of them.

As a big LoK fan I am happy to see LoK on Steam and GoG but I'm sort of holding off because I don't know if I'll be able to actually play them. With Steam I still can't make my VtM: The Bloodlines work and with GoG I can't download Gothic III due to continuously broken connection. I hope it will work with LoK though.

As for "old but gold" games I'd like to get Masters of Magic (it is on GOG) and Heroes of Might and Magic earlier versions more prominents. HoMM II was the first and only RTS I lost my sleep over. Warcraft I and II are fun as well.

There was also a very obscure simulator of wolf life, called, I think, "Wolf", that I have a special fondness for.

I've got the GOG versions. Well, I haven't played them, actually, but I've heard no complaints.

*grin* OK, did you install the latest UP [http://www.patches-scrolls.de/vampire_bloodlines.php]? Make sure you've got the automatic updates turned off, in Steam, otherwise they fuck it up. And what are your specs? Most importantly, do you have an Intel video chipset? If so, I'm sorry for you, but Bloodlines really hates integrated chipsets, especially Intel. I've heard reports it runs on some, but those would be the Blessed Ones?. With that said, you might be able to use 3D Analyze [http://games.softpedia.com/get/Tools/3D-Analyze.shtml] (or a similar tool) which basically allows you to emulate the missing video card features. It has worked in roughly 50% of the cases I've seen[footnote]which doesn't say much, since I've heard from less than 10 people who've used it...[/footnote]. Funnily, I never got it to work for me, and the game runs fine without it.

I did mention they were cheaper in GOG :) Here are the others, for completeness' sake:

The Steam versions are supposed to work on all new Windowses. At least it says so in the description, dunno - don't have them on there, probably won't any time soon - I've got them on GOG from way before. Also, I don't know if they don't have the same version GOG have (well, with the DRM on top), since that had a weird intro for SR1 - seems the audio was some kind of beta version. For the record here [https://hotfile.com/dl/154420373/88b5c69/Intro.bik.html] is the proper intro (just drop in instead of the other one).

Oh, this is very good to know. I'd actually prefer GoG version to Steam because I really, really dislike DMRs

When I tried last time, UP had some serious security holes or something, and I decided to wait, so I guess I'll need to try it again. My specs are Intel i7, 870 @ 2.93GHz with 8 gigs of RAM so I guess no Bloodlines for me -_- I didn't know about Intel thing.

No other video card? Then you must be using the built in one. Which is built in the i7... :/ yeah. Still, try though, you never know. You could try also try 3D Analyze, though, be aware that it's not guaranteed to work but it's worth a shot. Also, you might get somewhat crap performance in some areas.

And security holes in the UP? I'm not aware of any - that doesn't mean there aren't, but I doubt it's something to really concern about.

You're welcome! That's part of the reason GOG won me over :)

Thanks, I'll try it ASAP then :)

=D Congrads! I'd suggest enabling the console just in case (sometimes it's a good idea to have it, say, if you get stuck somewhere, you can use noclip to get out). To do this in Steam:

1. Go to Steam.
2. Go to Library.
3. Right-click on Bloodlines and choose Properties.
4. Click the button that says "SET LAUNCH OPTIONS...".
5. Type in -console and click OK then CLOSE.

You can then use the console hitting the ~ key in game. Hit it again to close.

Have fun, and don't open it :p

even though i have all of the games, i might buy them on Steam just for the hell of it :p
They are pretty awesome and it would be more convenient than dusting off my old PS1 and PS2.

Glad to see Square re-release this though. Classics. There still aren't many action adventure games that i can say give a better experience than Soul Reaver. Maybe it's just personal taste but i love the creepy atmosphere and subtle action segments of the game. it's very well paced and just let's you get lost in the game's world and explore it completely out of enjoyment and not as a chore.

It seems most of today's action games are lacking on the "Adventure" aspect and are mostly non-stop action and it starts to feel repetitive.

I somehow think part 2 has to be one of the most continuously-pirated games around as you cannot actually find a way to play this game legitimately in most cases. Even eBay has a rather sparse population of 7 atm. I've been hoping to get a copy of this myself. I think my friend wants his back so he could play it again.

I'm with you on wanting both of these and Grim Fandango to re-enter legitimate circulation.

I didn't even know those games were on the PC until I saw them on the front page the other day.

As for DD, I still lament the fact that digital means no hard copies what so ever. Freelancer would be a great choice for DD, but since Microsoft published it, I doubt we will be lucky enough to even see a GFWL release of it.

Depending on winter sale price I intend to get them... I actually never played past the very beginning of the First Soul Reaver, which reminds me, can we get the first Blood Omen for PC somewhere?

BO is on an abandonware website. I'm not clear why or how, but it's there. I'm a bit confused, since it's still sold on PSN. You can easily google for it, though, but it's missing the cutscenes - just heads-up. You can still find them and watch them on YouTube.

Also, GOG are attempting to add it to their catalogue. At least that's what they've said, I dunno if they'd be able to, how it's going or anything.
