Let us (or maybe just me) bemoan long-distance relationships

Definitely 0-2 with these so far.

First one was when me and my highschool sweetheart tried to keep it together freshman year of college. And well that was a complete disaster. Long story short: during winter break that year she breaks up with me like three days after christmas (awesome present btw), spewing all this crap about how she still feels more me and it's just the distance that's getting to her, but then I find out she's now dating one of my best friends (a guy I've known since I was in 2nd grade) and they'd been screwing for at least like two months. Which kinda cut me out of my group of friends from high school (I tried once or twice to keep hanging out with them, but it was just too awkward), so I spend the rest of that break alone, depressed AND sick with mono and strepthroat at the same time. That took a little while to get over.

Second attempt at a long distance relationship ended relatively recently (about three and a half weeks ago). Not NEARLY as bad an end as the first one, but still a bummer. She and I met while we were both in the same field ecology program in Australia, and we kept it going over the holidays. NYC/Pittsburgh wasn't too hard to do. But then in Feb I left for New Zealand, and it seemed to be going well for a while, and then it just became a little too much. Had a bunch of long talks and I guess we ended it as amicably as we could, given the circumstances. Since it's ended she's found someone back at her school. Which stings, but I take some solace knowing that I am SO much better than him. But that's still twice I've lost out to proximity.

Blargh. Shit happens I guess.

Anyone else got some stories? Similar failures? Incredible triumphs?

I'm all ears.

Um.

My high school girlfriend and I became long distance when I didn't get into our planned college. We lasted almost one semester before it apparently was too much for her.

Another one ended because we both didn't feel strongly enough about each other to do long-distance.

Most recently, a girl I loved just stopped loving me back, so I don't think it had anything to do with the distance... but maybe if I could have seen her more often things would have gone differently. I dunno.

I am probably done with them, personally!
