Let's be a bit positive and talk about our favorite DLC in this thread.

I know, I know. We've all been there - annoyed when we see another piece of overpriced pointless DLC, or even enraged when we figure out we've just paid for overpriced pointless DLC. There's even another thread currently on the front page decrying annoying DLC. But I think DLC can be a lot of fun, and have had some great experiences with it. So let's put aside the hate (momentarily) and talk about some of our favorite downloadable content.

For me, the Shivering Isles has probably been hands down my favorite piece of DLC. Long, full of new places, enemies, armor, and missions, it was a really fun journey after completing the main campaign (and spending dozens of hours in the main world). Lots of fun, and worth the price - especially since I bought it when it was on sale for 50% off.

It's a tie between Shadow Broker and Alan Wake. Shadow Broker actually ties into the main Mass Effect storyline and isn't some stand-alone mission. It also develops the characters and it brings Liara back into the mix. It is especially good if Liara is your love interest from the first game because it makes her reactions all the more heart-aching to watch.

Alan Wake's DLC "fixed" the ending to the original game, and like Shadow Broker, ties into the main story. Heck, it CONTINUES the main story. I loved the game to begin with, but the ending left me wanting. I saw that there would be DLC for it, but like most DLC, I figured it would just be little side things that don't really advance the plot. The Signal was sort of like this. Then The Writer came out and I am happy to say that I was proven very, very wrong. This game really needs a sequel.

Probably the Shivering Isles, a whole new place to explore and the awesomeness of Sheogorath.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2: Vietnam.

A whole expansion for 1200 microsoft points. Best DLC ever.

Runners up would be Mass Effect 2's Overlord pack (for genuine quality and emotional depth), Mass Effect 1's Bring Down The Sky mission (which was like a very high-quality normal Mako mission - and since I loved those, of course I'd love it) and Halo 3's Cold Storage map (I loved the character and atmosphere of that map, and it was free).

Oh, and DICE deserve an honourable mention in general. Every map they release for download is free, provided you have the VIP code.

Lair of the Shadow Broker gets my love. I love stuff like Awakening, Dead Money, and Broken Steel, but The Shadow Broker dlc was just fucking awesome.

Yeah, I'd say probably The Secret Armory of General Knoxx has been the best one I've bought, but in general I've found DLC to be abhorrent and pointless.

Even though I tend to avoid DLC, I did enjoy some of the stuff they had for Fallout 3 though I was quite annoyed that you had to have Broken Steel for the game to become open-ended and unending. But the actual additional missions on that one and Point Lookout were a lot of fun.

This thread is a nice change. Good DLC should be encouraged, while those who produce garbage should be shunned and hollered at loudly. Additionally, those who force game companies who wish to give away content for free, to charge people, should be roundly kicked in the teeth. Or, alternatively, sent a strongly worded letter.

Thanks! And I agree - the world can always use more positive reinforcement.

Another DLC that comes to mind is Undead Nightmare for RDR - I haven't played it yet, but I got it when it was on sale (for $5 if you can believe that), and everything I've seen/heard about it sounds great. I'm excited to play it and finish up the rest of the side missions in RDR sometime soon.

I don't buy much DLC and when I do it usually ends up dissapointing *Ahem Knothole Island *Ahem Ahem* but I really enjoyed most of the Rock Band song packs I bought and thought they were worth my money, even if they were a bit overpriced.

Not sure. Was never really "wow'd" by any DLC now that I think about it. Yeah I enjoyed them, but none really stuck with me.

Oh wait, The Witcher: Enhanced Edition.

If you bought the original game, CD Projeckt Red gave you a massively upgraded version of the game for free. They optimized it better, touched up the graphics, shortened loading times(they're still frequent, however), re-recorded the dialog, incorporated mod tools, and basically re-made the game.

And they give it away for free to owners of the original. And for those who didn't already own the game, they sold it for $20.

That is pretty amazing.

It'd have to be a tie between Alan Wake's The Signal and The Writer, and Bioshock 2's Minerva's Den. Great writing and flipped gameplay for Alan Wake, and a great story + the chance for more Bioshock goodness.

Broken Steel, IMO, is the best DLC on XBL today. I almost consider it a necessity to properly enjoy Fallout 3, as it fixes my only really big problem with the game (the ending), and adds a bunch of new content.

Alan Wake's DLC is pretty good as well. The Signal and The Writer are two of the best chapters in the game, and The Writer in particular puts a nice cap onto the story while still leaving it open enough for a sequel. Good stuff.

Red Dead Redemption's Zombie Nightmare is also great. Its a really good expansion that dramatically changes the way the game plays, without actually changing the game's rules. Its fun to see just how much a sandbox game can be fundamentally altered by the types of enemies you face. Unfortunately, it has to stand amongst a glut of sub-par DLC for the game (with the exception of Outlaws to the End).

Other noteworthy mentions:

Battlefield BC2: Vietnam: A really beefy expansion for a bargain price.

Left 4 Dead 2; The Passing and The Sacrifice: Both of them are above average campaigns (though I wish they were longer). The addition of mutations was a fantastic idea, and with The Sacrifice you get No Mercy as well (my personal favorite L4D1 map).

Grand Theft Auto 4: The Ballad of Gay Tony: I personally thought The Lost and The Damned was somewhat meh, but TBoGT really raised the bar and brought a lot of fun back into GTAIV that I felt was missing in the vanilla game.

Gears of War 2: All Fronts Collection: Its not necessarily 1 DLC, but taking all of them into consideration. The sheer number and value of this collection is enormous if you enjoyed the multiplayer, and the new single player chapter, while somewhat short, has a few new refreshing gameplay elements that make it quite interesting.

ahh that rubbish!
but I digress one of my favourite DLC was the alternate Sith levels for The Force Unleashed, the idea of replacing Vader at Papa Palpatine's side and chasing after Obi Wan and Luke was great fun!
