Ok, so after seeing how awesome some LPs of Dorf Fort are (Reveredtour, Boatmurdered), I've decided to start my own succession fortress. Each fortress owner will control the fortress for one year, from Spring to Spring. I'm going to have a few of my friends go after me, after which it's first-come-first-serve.
If you want in on this fortress, send me a PM. I'll assign people to lead the fortress in the order I receive PMs. If you take more than a week to complete your turn, all progress you made will be forfeit and the fortress will revert to the previous save.

From the journal of Mosus Ostathtekkud, 1st Granite, year 126

Finally! We're here! After a harsh journey from the mountainhomes, into the forbidding wilderness beyond, our harsh trek has finally ended. Our party of seven is to make an outpost for the glory of all Luslemkivish, The Puzzling Lancer. There are almost no supplies left, but with the stout labour at my disposal will come sustenance, and I will provide for these dwarves. We're expecting a supply caravan just before Winter entombs us, but it is Spring now. Enough time, I'm sure, to delve secure lodgings, ere the wolves get hungry. A new chapter of dwarves history begins here at this place, Nishkir, "Trademerged". Strike the earth, my brothers!

Thanks to the crappy navigational skills of some other dwarf and certainly not me, we ended up on a mountain...

with a sheer cliff on one side.

Thankfully, without even having to dig into the mountain or deeper into the earth, there is already exposed magnetite! This will be a jumpstart to our metal industry, and the sand just lying around will help make glass. This looks to be a promising fortress from the very start!

7th Felsite, 126

I struck gold!

..in the refuse area. Wonderful.

14th Hematite, early Summer, 126
Mining is tiring work! I keep falling asleep on the job.

And I've quite a way to go yet. I still have to dig out the sleeping quarters:

The path to the gold that doesn't go through corpses:

And of course, the graveyard, with my mausoleum at the end there:

19th Hematite, 126

Hooray! Migrants! Some of them will have to help me mine, if we're to get this fortress up and running quickly.

After looking over their skills, it seems...

it took all of 3 months, 13 days for a soap maker to arrive. I don't know why soap making seems to be such a popular pastime among our race, but i'll just have to endure it.

26th Galena, 126
One of the migrants informed me that limonite, which is everywhere around our fortress, is an ore of iron! Our metalsmithing industry will be the talk of all Puzzling Lancer!

11th Sandstone, 126, Mid-Autumn
More migrants! In the time since these ones and the ones before arriving, the fortress has developed quite well. Our metalsmithing industry is up, but not the glass or trap-making ones, yet.

16th Timber, 126, Late Autumn

Hooray! The dwarven merchants, and the outpost liaison have arrived! It's certainly been a long time since we left from the Mountainhomes, and I hope to hear of news. To be honest, starting up a fortress isn't as exciting as everydwarf would have you think.

He wanted to know what we wanted to purchase from the merchants next year, and gave me lists and asked me to mark off what I wanted.

Never enough traps

Don't want to waste our iron on making bolts, I guess.

Nothing that interes.... IS THAT LAY PEWTER?!?!?!

Two hundred percent for lay pewter?
THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!

Before he concluded the meeting, he gave me a list of items that are in demand from the mountainhomes. I shall leave it here for my replacement to see once he gets here.

Immediately after the meeting, I was told that Asmel has become more distant, which is odd, considering she makes friends quickly, and enjoys the company of others.

But... I won't be the leader next year.

Asmel kept drawing pictures of skeletons, so I mined out an area for a butcher's workshop, and had someone slaughter the mule foal. This was apparently what she wanted, as she got its bones immediately and went back into the workshop.

Some time later:

23rd Moonstone, 126, Early Winter
I've ordered the construction of many many cage traps, for defence when the new leader arrives.

1st Granite, 127, Early Spring

And with that, it's time for me to hand over control of the fortress. My replacement, I realise with embarrassment, is Ustuth Oslanakath, the soap maker I made fun of on his arrival.

That was fun! If only I had more than a year. I'm handing it over to my irl friend, dantallion.

If anypony wants a copy of the save so far, it can be found at http://www.mediafire.com/?yaebjt9bemnd9cn

Good luck with this, also build traps.
EDIT: Forgot to mention, im gonna watch this because DF lp's usually end in either a spectacular fireball, insanity or some form of daemonic invasion.

I felt there's no way this fortress could live up to Reveredtour, and I don't want to disappoint people expecting it to be Reveredtour.

I'm not so sure if I want to play, but I'll be watching. It's one of the best games to Let's Play, in my opinion. So much freedom, so much possibility for insanity.

He's just trying to show off his one-armed military prowess.

The lazy newb pack, containing the game, assisting tools, tutorials, possibly tilesets (but don't use tilesets, only elves use tilesets). It's a really good game, worth getting in to.

No it is rather overwhelming, it just takes time. Best way to approach it is to start a fortress and just concentrate on a couple of aspects at a time. It will fail but with each go you learn a bit more. Food and booze production is a good place to start. Concentrate on getting that up and running as it is vital. Then once you understand that pick something else to work on.

Once you know about food/booze it's half the battle won. The wiki is really good now. The interface *is* a mess though.

If you want to play something along the same lines but easier to get in to try Goblin Camp. Not as complex yet but they made great effort to make the user interface user friendly. Mouse driven menus etc. Worth a look.

It's a very good pack and I agree that tilesets detract from the game. However that doesn't mean you should stick with the default font as I for one hate how it gives everything a stretched look. Personally I use Herrbdog's font as it is clearer and properly square. makes the whole thing just a bit more crisp.

Can't believe I'm finally here, worst trip ever. We ran out of alcohol on the trip and I'm just dying for a drink, but first things first there are a few changes I gotta make around here. First more soap making, second more elf killing and thirdly the leader will be elected from the last batch of migrants each year. I didn't want to be leader I just wanted to make soap and drink, but I've been selected to lead you and I'll do my best to keep this fortress up and running, now go get drunk everybody, this speech is over.

1st Granite, 127, Early Spring

The switches for the toilet are in this order remember it well, I'm not going to be held responsible for any screwups flooding the fortress

the closest switch to the three floodgates is the one that opens the three floodgates

the second furthest away opens the floodgate second furthest away from the three floodgates (the one that lets in the water)

the third and final switch opens the floodgate furthest away from the three floodgates this is the floodgate that sends the water to the waste reservoir any questions no good

oh and yeah that guy got possessed or something

21st obsidian

it's been a long year but it's finally operational I now pronounce the dwarven toilet open, to the next leader may the blood of many elves be on your hands. Make your own legacy blah blah blah. Good luck you're gonna need it I think I've pissed off every civilisation from here to gods know where. Ah well now I'm off to get drunk and watch My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic.

...are you guys updating by editing new events into your old posts? No wonder it seemed like there wasn't any activity. Multiple posts would help bump the thread, you know.

Well, when I did my turn I updated every 5 minutes, and didn't want to be seen as spamming, I guess Dan just followed my example, despite his... more sporadic updates.
