Hello escapists, lately I've gotten into the habit of reading webcomics but found that I have not reached the required number of illustrated shenanigans to sate the gaping maw that is my boredom. So I thought to myself, "Surely I'm not the only one with this dilemma!" And then it hit me. "I'll make a post on the Escapist! Their taste is quite exquisite!" So, let's share some of our favorite online comics and see what we come up with.

NOTE: Penny Arcade, Critical Miss, and Name Game are givens.

First off, Romantically Apocalyptic. [http://romanticallyapocalyptic.com/] A weird, funny, confusing...thing. All right, I have no idea what's been going on the last 20 updates but it all looks gorgeous and the older ones are just gold.

Next, Nerf Now. [http://www.nerfnow.com/] Do you like fan service and TF2? Yes it's just as bad as it sounds and it's amazing because of it. Also there's some other games the writer likes to rant about. 3 panels 5 times a week isn't a bad deal for free.

Lastly, I'll leave you folks with Manly Guys doing Manly Things. [http://thepunchlineismachismo.com/] Ever wondered what Duke Nukem does in his spare time? How about what would happen if Leonidas and Kratos got into a game of Gay Chicken? Also, there's a Gyarados. I'll let you find out for yourself.

Hopefully I showed you guys something you haven't seen yet. Either way, share some of your favorites and we'll see what we can come up with. Gaming related or not I'm interested to see what you folks read.

I tend to go through a lot of webcomics daily but I would say that there are a few that I am fond of.

Questionable Content [http://www.questionablecontent.net/] is about Marten and his many misadventures with his ever expanding group of unique and interesting friends, as he courses through life with mild optimism and sarcastic quips. One thing that drew me to this webcomic is the artist's improving art style over the years and his ability to make each comic its own joke while still holding a narrative that can run for several months.

Also, he updates daily, so that's freakin' solid.

Sandra and Woo [http://www.sandraandwoo.com/] is a comic about a girl and her raccoon, who can talk, as they tend to explore questions about life through adolescent reasoning and humor. It's a simple, clean webcomic about nature, friendship, math, and things that pre-teens learn to deal with and quickly mock.

VG Cats [http://www.vgcats.com/] is a humorous webcomic about Aeris and Leo III; two felines who parody and often times, humorously criticize, many classic and current games, as well as what all the cool kids are talking about. This comic doesn't offer much in terms of narrative, but each comic expresses how we as gamers have felt about a certain game or subject at one point or another.

Really just fun to read. Also, there are both voiced and animated versions of some of the more known comics that really bring the comic content to life.

My favourite Warhammer 40,000 related webcomics. It's light-hearted and hilarious, poking fun at rules and lore. [http://www.wobblymodelsyndrome.com/]

I wholeheartedly recommend El Goonish Shive [http://topwebcomics.com/outgoing.aspx?comicid=129], Rival Angels [http://topwebcomics.com/outgoing.aspx?comicid=7272], Grrl Power [http://topwebcomics.com/outgoing.aspx?comicid=11940], Flipside [http://topwebcomics.com/outgoing.aspx?comicid=2722], and Misfile [http://topwebcomics.com/outgoing.aspx?comicid=5387]. More story-focused than gag-a-day, so if you're into that, there's that for you.

I love the shit out of 8-bit theater [http://nuklearpower.com/]. It was a story-based parody of the final fantasy games (specifically the first) and of RPGs in general. It finished in 2010 and it was really fucking clever character comedy.

DAMN, I wanted to post that one.

Here are some that I read and enjoy, by category:

Gaming

CTRL+ALT+DEL http://www.cad-comic.com/cad/20021023

Darths & Droids http://www.darthsanddroids.net/episodes/0001.html

looking for Group http://www.lfgcomic.com/page/605

Manly Subject Comics:

Least I Could Do (Be warned, a year in or so, the artwork style changes drastically. It was jarring at first, but I like the new style way better now) http://leasticoulddo.com/comic/20030210

Misfile (An anime style comic about a teenage downhill racer and the stoner angel who turns him into a girl on accident) http://www.misfile.com/?date=2004-02-22

XKCD (There is a little text hidden on each picture that you activate by hovering your cursor over the comic. You haven't read it for real until you have also read the captions) http://xkcd.com/1/

Random Funny:

Married to the Sea (The comics are updated daily, but the page only rolls over at the beginning of each month) http://www.marriedtothesea.com/archives/2006/Feb/

I hope you enjoy some of those.

A little off topic but have you read Brian Clevinger's "Real Comic"?

It's called Atomic Robo, it's about an immortal robot made by Nikola Tesla and it's easily one of the best comics out there right now.

More on topic...

VGcats used to be right up there with PA for me, but he updates like twice a year now. Super Effective, his other [pokemon] comic is pretty humorous if you're into the whole pokemon thing.

If no one has mentioned it, Legacy Control [http://legacy-control.com/] is one I've found fairly recently that's good for games humour.

-edit-
I became aware of Hark a Vagrant after Bread Crumbs became a minor catch phrase, and it pops up repeatedly on message boards, but the gross majority of the comics just blow right by me.

I recommend Boxer Hockey [http://www.boxerhockey.fireball20xl.com]. It is definitely one of my favorites. It has great art and a funny story.
I also read Bitter Sweet Candy Bowl [http://www.bittersweetcandybowl.com], but it's definitely not for everyone. It's basically just teen drama but with personified cats and dogs instead of humans. It's not like the bottom of the barrel cheap kind of cheap drama in my opinion though, and I think it might be worth checking out.
I read a bunch more web comics but they have all pretty much been mentioned at this point.

How about an old one from this site?

Stolen Pixels [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/comics/stolen-pixels]

'tis a comic where a guy takes pictures from games and stuff and puts funny text over them. Here's [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/comics/stolen-pixels/4979-Stolen-Pixels-1-Surreal-Tournament#] where it starts.

Also, from the same guy, DM of the Rings [http://www.shamusyoung.com/twentysidedtale/?p=612]. It's Lord of the Rings as a Dungeons and Dragons game. If you like Lord of the Rings, or Dungeons and Dragons, or both, give it a read. It's pretty funny stuff. And if you don't, well give it a read anyway. It's still pretty funny.

I haven't read webcomics in several years, but of the few I remember, I recall quite liking these:

http://www.thezombiehunters.com/
http://deadwinter.cc
- Two comics about a zombie apocalypse, but done quite differently.

http://ebony.smackjeeves.com
http://alternate.smackjeeves.com
- Both by the same author, and both unfinished and abandoned, but still worth a read. The first is a charming and funny little story about a loveably-eccentric prince (that ended far before its time). The second is an equally as charming school-based sitcom about an egotistical guy who inadvertently befriends two people who he deems to be idiots.

http://requiem.seraph-inn.com/
http://www.straysonline.com/
-These two were still just starting up when I last read them, but they seemed promising. The first is set in Victorian times, about spirits and ghosts and stuff. Plus it's complete, so you can read it all in one go if you don't like waiting for updates.
The second is about a mute hitman who's being followed around by a young girl. That's all I remember, but I think it was pretty good. Oh wait, but there might've been something about transforming into a dog.

http://digitalpimponline.com/strips.php?title=movie
http://digitalpimponline.com/strips.php?title=mat
-The first is a mostly strip-based (but with some running jokes and sometimes overarching stories) comic by a film critic. Most strips are related to a film (which he usually also reviews below).
The second is a running story about college students. I don't remember much, but I think it was pretty good.
Also, one of them had a zombie apocalypse-related storyline, but I forget which.

http://www.girlswithslingshots.com/
-I don't remember much about this, except it's about the life and times of a couple of young women. I recall there being a talking Mexican cactus and a cat with learning difficulties. From that, I'm going to guess that it was good.

http://boxerhockey.fireball20xl.com/
-A pretty awesome comic about hockey. In boxers. With a frog. And nothing to do with actual hockey whatsoever. Check it out.

http://www.loadingartist.com/
-A strip-style comic somewhat reminiscent of stuff like Cyanide and Happiness, The Gun Show, and The Oatmeal.

I haven't, but I do have the Tesla t-shirt that says "science" on the front and "atomic robo" on the back.

Not sure how the thread got this long without mentioning Little League (now JL8 for copyright reasons) Its about the Justice League as 8 years olds and its ADORABLE. Here is the tumbler for it. http://jl8comic.tumblr.com

otherwise XKCD has been mentioned and I thought I saw The Trenches already as well.

I would highly recommend the following:

Order of the Stick (hilarious, and very well written, story does take a while to take off though.) http://www.giantitp.com/
Unsounded (well written and very interesting fantasy webcomic) http://www.casualvillain.com/Unsounded/
Lackadaisy Cats (Set in the prohibition, best art of any webcomic I've seen, and very well written) http://lackadaisycats.com/
Gunnerkrigg Court (Very interesting, great art and writing, definitely worth a look) http://gunnerkrigg.com/index2.php

And I've already seen people suggest El Goonish Shive, Misfile, XKCD, Stolen Pixels, and DM of the rings so I won't link those (though they are awesome).

Well since I've arrived at college I've really gotten into Homestuck and Misfile. I also read other comics such as Flipside, Mystic Revolution, Brawl in the Family and xkcd.

Out of all of these the funnier ones are BitF and xkcd. The others all can be funny but are also pretty serious and do some serious character development.
