i saw this on the news and had to share it.

Some Eagle scout, which is the highest rank you can achieve in Boy Scouts, was suspended from his high school for 20 days because he has a 2-inch pocket knife in his car.

Said pocket knife was part of a emergency survival kit that he had in his car, along with blankets, a pillow, an MRE (Meal Ready to Eat), and toiletries. Both his principle and the police officer that came out with him to his car said that he was not breaking any laws, and yet he was still suspended because of his school districts zero-tolerance policy!

I personally think that this zero-tolerance crap has gone way to far. let's use some common sense in situataions like this.
what do you all think?

If he had brought it inside the school and/or near other students or faculty. I might understand. But if he had just left in his car, then yes, that is overdoing it.

I don't think this is the worst example of political correctness I've seen (we've had a couple of good ones in Australia the last few weeks, with the Hey Hey It's Saturday skit and the midget cup) but it does seem like common sense should have been used in that situation.

Two things.

1. That's not political correctness. That's "Zero Tolerance" (and it's questionable, yes). Political Correctness would have been if they let him keep his knife due to religious beliefs.

2. You linked Fox News. I've seen enough of them by this point to completely eliminate them as any sort of credible source, especially with a concept like "political correctness," which is shorthand for "it's the liberals' fault."

I originally saw this on CNN and several other news stations, but fox was the only main source I could find on the internet...
also, i realized about the political correctness thing and fixed it :D

This is retarded. It's part of his survival pack. And he left it in his car. He didn't carry it on him, he didn't bring it into the school, it's just in his survival pack.

Whose the bastard who ratted him out?

I used to keep a pocket knife in my back-pack at school. Loads of people knew it, but they also knew that if any of them told the teachers they would regret it. No one likes a snitch.

Yay!

And yeah, zero tolerance policies tend to hurt more than they help, ironically because they're so fantasically open-ended. <url=http://www.cracked.com/article_17216_p2.html>Cracked puts it better than I could.

If he was breaking a rule, then he deserves the punishment for breaking that rule.
the thing is he wasn't and was told he wasn't

While that is true, if the rule should even exist in the first place can still be up to debate.

It was never against the rules to carry a knife in school when I went to high school. The rule was under 2 1/2 inches. Plenty large enough to be a useful tool. Not so large that it can be a really effective weapon.

Besides of all the stabbings that happened at my school only one was done with a knife, and that knife was over 4 inches long meaning the kid shouldn't have had it anyway.

Which goes to show you, if the rules don't work in the first place make them more retarded is always a good policy.

why on earth would he have an emergency kit ready when he lives in new york? in case of king kong and/or Godzilla?

sometimes there are two sides of stupidity in a story.

i wont say he deserves it, but c'mon hes not really innocent, next time he goes to school he probably shouldn't be prepared for a blizzard, maybe just for class.

Disclaimer: I am an Aussie, so apparently everything I say on PC and like topics is to be negated by you American types

That being said, is it any different from a lady toting around a can of mace, or a small self defence weapon in her hand bag? Australia doesn't have the same paranoia as the Yanks, schools (at least in my city) do not have metal detectors.

He is a scout, its the same as a rock climber having their ropes and harnesses in their car, so he should let it be. it would be a bit sus if it was JUST a knife chilling on his back seat, but even then i don't think its worth a suspension, at WORST a slap on the wrist...

if it had of been in his locker or backpack thats a different story, but (at least in Aus) thats only a arvo detention offence not a suspension

[i/]Intolerance[/i] is a bad thing, frowned upon in most intellectual societies, odd then, that our education system clings to [i/]zero tolerance[/i] like a fat man to a pizza.

thats funny, i have a 3 inch flip blade with serrated top for gutting and ive never got in trouble once. in grade ten my teacher borrowed it to cut open a box and handed it back without a word being said.

(note, the reason i have this is to cut open hay bales in the morning to feed the horses)

Exactly.

Even if it was within view from outside the car, it's not technically 'exposed' since it IS only a pocket knife...

I know most school policies are zero tolerance, but should be okay as long as it's not visible if inside a car.

It's a FOX news story so it's probably a gee-up of some sort, these things always are. FOX have obviously latched onto it to try and make everyone go "weapons at school = good" because FOX have that sort of agenda. Fact is though, if the parents don't like the school policy they should change schools instead of crying to the right-wing media like a bunch of kids who got their lunch money stolen.

Grade 10? Maybe in Canada its cool to have knives? just jokes no offense meant.
Anyway this kid obviously does not deserve the punishment, what ever happened to "hey, don't bring that to school anymore please" and one afternoon of detention?
