Level-5 Donates 20,000 Soccer Balls to African Kids

We're gonna need a bigger soccer field.

Hide Nakata's NPO Take Action Foundation. As it turns out, the sales of the soccer RPG were pretty dang successful: the end result is that Level-5 is going to give over 20,000 soccer balls for children to play with.

By the end of September, the "Spark" and "Bomber" editions of the game had sold a grand total of 1,101,040 units. Since Level-5 had committed to donating 11 yen of each unit sold, that means a total of 12,111,440 yen was raised for the charity.

While both Level-5 and the Take Action Foundation are working on this, "the actual ground work of the charity is being handled by Unicef, which will be using the balls to assist in education programs for South African children." This isn't the end of Level-5's involvement with the charity, as the final donation will be determined by sales of the game editions up through March of next year.

I don't know how I feel about this. On the one hand, charity is good. Footballs are better than nothing. But surely there are better things to spend the money on? Y'know, books? Food? Books can be used to help teach reading, infinitely more valuable than what they could do with a ball.

Still, again, footballs are better than nothing. Well done, Level-5.

I'm pretty sure things like polio vaccine, mosquito nets and drinkable water would go a lot further than a buttload of communist kickballs. This is also why I'm against Child's play.

Yeah, too bad you can't eat soccer balls. Good cause though. Better than giving them bibles then feeding them when they conform to your beliefs.

XD

they should include some of those things with the footballs. I'm guessing that there are other charities in place to get them those things and the charity needs orders more resources (not just money) to make that happen.

priorities priorities.

This reminds me quite a bit of my favorite charity (Right to Play). In any case, good job Level-5 (and why can't we have that game? I've always been intrigued in finding out how those "sports rpg" play out).

You're against a charity that donates to hospitals, toys and games for children to use while they're sick and stuck away from their regular friends and family?

Although it's not a cure, it gives them something to do and lets them enjoy their time. There's other organizations which strive toward cures.

Also, not every child being helped by child play is actually dying. Some might just have temporary illnesses which require extended stints in hospitals.

Wanting to help kids feel better when they're stuck in super sanitized white rooms having nothing to enjoy but get a needle in the arm? Perish the thought!

As Jesus Phish said, there are already charities for helping the starving. If you'd rather spend your money on them, do so. Having an assembled force on helping the poor is way better than millions of small organizations all failing at their cause.

Agree as well. The cure may be a LONG way off, but the need to feel human and loved is immediate. Something about giving a man a fish and he makes a fish curry, teach a man to fish and he can make his own reality show.

Or something like that.

This is a good idea. I mean you can have hours upon hours of fun with a football. I just hope they don't just throw them out the side of an aeroplane. It could be quite painful for the kids below.

Now if only we could get some food. And medicine. And water. And someone to keep the Warlord of the Week from stealing those things. And leaving bullets in their place.

Games companies should be more actively involved in charity, then maybe the paranoid mass media will start to get off thier backs.

I'd say they're already doing a lot more in comparison to any of us. When is the last time you gave to charity? There's a lot of foundations out there that all offer something different to people who need it. I'd say those children that get these footballs are going to be content with anything they can get their hands on. If they're going to use them for educational purposes, or simply as toys I think that goes a long way in helping the people who need it most.

If you want to contribute YOUR money, do so. Give to a charity that sends food, or books, or what ever else you think that would benefit them the most.

Jeez, way to be pessimistic misanthropes you guys...

OT: Good for Level-5, this is a great thing they're doing. Sure, there are more "useful" things that they could do with the money, but that doesn't mean what they're doing isn't a charitable thing. This is about 1000x more than what anyone else does with their money, that's for sure.
