I'm applying for a scholarship that would take me to New Zealand for 9 months to a year to study at the University of Auckland. I have never been in that area of the world and I don't have any idea on many of the basic needs. I've been looking up apartments and the costs of food stuffs and I don't know what is a good deal and what is a rip off.

Escapists, I am curious as to any advice that those of you would have in renting an apartment, where to shop, and general tips as to living in Auckland.

I cant say much in terms of Auckland as I live in AUS, but a good advice is to ring the Uni and ask about local trustworthy renters, advice on what's a reasonable price etc.

I am from Hamilton so im not sure what the prices are like in Auckland, but here you can get a semi decent 2 bedroom place for around 200 a week it wont be amazing but its servicable. Food and such can be kinda cheap if you know what your looking for (id suggest Pac n save supermarkets) I would however warn you that (if your a smoker) the price of cigerettes here is kinda crazy, and goes up every year. Beyond that Hello from New Zealand and I hope that if you do come here you enjoy your time.
