Many of the game previews looked almost as good as the "Colonial Marines" did.
We all know how that one turned out. For me, previews and trailers account for very little
of my opinion.
"Best Of E3" really is a "Best Of Publicity" ranking.

It's called a vertical slice when developers put together an 'ideal' version of their game for trade shows and presentations to show off and try and drum up interest in their game. The vertical slice is also supposed to serve as an ideal of what the game as a whole is supposed to look like later down the line, but obviously that isn't always as it turns out.

That's why often even playable demo shown off at events like E3 will fail to live up to the actual games released later on: See Colonial Marines for a perfect example of that.

So just take these sorts of things with a hint of skepticism when you see them. Unless the devs are showing off a truly vast portion of their game it's often safe to assume, especially if the game is still fairly early in development, that what was shown is probably a vertical slice and might not be fully comparable to the game itself on release. For good or bad.

These game segments are what the devs often aspire to create, not always what they're ultimately capable of creating.

Basically it's a just a bunch of "This is as good as this game could possibly get, and what we are trying to do." It's should at most be enough to make you aware of a games existence and interested in it, but it should not be what you base your purchase on.

Remember always that your money might be better spent on a game that would give you more enjoyment, and that your time is far too precious to waste on games you don't enjoy. Do don't waste either on games that aren't fun for you, and make an educated purchase by reading/watching reviews and perhaps even a few let's play episodes (if the reviews are not enough for you to feel confident about your decision).

It takes an hour to 30 minutes of effort (at most) and it might just save you 60$/Euros or more, and time you'd otherwise spend on a game you don't enjoy. Let reviewers play bad and/or disappointing games; it's what they are paid to do, so you won't have to.

There is a very easy way to prevent Aliens Colonial Marines from happening, as Kerethos laid out above. Read a review of the game before buying it. But you are right, at E3 it's not the completed game and it's wrong to place your faith in it, it's still publicity and a lot could change.

In that context, what E3 does is give you suggestions as to which games you might want to look out for and research upon release. It's true there's still a lot of hype and marketing there, but people are physically playing an (unfinished) version of the game and that's the best evidence you have to go on before the game is actually released and you can start reading reviews.

For example, I was very iffy about Shadows of Mordor. The plot looked like fanfic. The action looked like it was literally torn out of Assassins Creed. As in they'd actually taken the animations for Assassins Creed and put them directly into the game without thinking about what that meant in terms of character. Finally the Nemesis system sounded like hokey rubbish that would boil down to the wonders of the Find the Blue/Red/Green/Purple/Indigio Key random quests. But the previews have been much more positive and suggested that the nemesis system may be more flexible and interesting than that. This doesn't mean I'm about to pre-order the game, because I don't want an Aliens Colonial Marine, but it does mean I'm going to listen out for it's release and read reviews about it when it does release.

If you really want to see best of "let's see who threw the most money at us" just check IGN E3 awards list.

Witcher 3 not being on the best game best PC is simply just lame. That and many other games that they've missed, but W3 was the most important one for me that they did a big mistake by not placing it on the list at least. It received quite a lot of backlash in the comments section.
