I asked before, but I wanted to ask again about this genre. Are there any good combat focused Space RTS? I want something a little more Battlefleet gothic and a little less Age of Empires resource management.

I can't think of any off hand. What would be awesome is if they made something kind of like Warcraft, but set in space, with space units like spaceships and stuff.

I would buy that.

Most of them are resource management style.

The only ones I know of are the ones I own.

Sins of a Solar Empire.
Galactic Civilisations.

And I suppose you could try the X game series. I have them but haven't played them yet although reading up they are strategy"ish" games.

Try Homeworld. It's old, but still awesome. With any luck it'll be on steam or GOG.

Game was gorgeous back in the day (1999ish), had full depth of movement and pretty intense space battles.

It also had a sequel I've never played.

EDIT: Did I mention it was developed by Relic?

I'd recommend Star Wars: Empire at War. It's pretty old, but I think it still holds up.
This was what came to mind for me too. Very little in the way of resource management. Unfortunately I remember the ground battles to be pretty weak. Space is amazing though - multiple target points on ships, dynamic interplay between tiny fighters and massive warships.

These games don't have any resource management in them:-

The Homeworld series should be your first stop, all 3 are great imo, Cataclysm is the best RTS imo. Tons of mods available for HW2, from star wars to star trek, it wouldn't surprise me if there is a 40K gothic mod for it too.

The try Nexus: the jupiter incident, small scale battles than Homeworld but still good.

Haegemonia: Legions of Iron and a sequel by Digital Reality (Sina Mora, Sky Drift, Imperium Gallactica1/2) is a series I've never played myself however I've heard they play as a poor mans Homeworld

Those some old Star Trek RTS games too can't remember the names but they play similar to Nexus

Wait, whats wrong with Sins?

Its like, the pinnacle of the combat heavy space RTS. I prefer economic sim; so I gravitate more to Distant Worlds and the old MoO series rather than sins. Middle of the road would be Sword of the Stars (skip the sequel)

Ground combat is ok (you basically just buy the high-end units and charge the enemy base most of the time, it shines when you're outnumbered and have to actually use tactics), but space combat is fantastic. I haven't seen an equally good system, well, ever. The complete edition is on steam, and it's pretty cheap if I remember correctly.

Both are GREAT games, and I wouldn't call it a 'poor man's Homeworld'.

It's more like a 4X/RTS hybrid lite.

Fun for a quick, or long, game.

I too recommend Sins of a Solar Empire, being able to have a fleet of hundreds of ships fighting across whole star systems at once is just awesome (And with the Rebellion expansion you can have the giant beam laser death spewing Advent Titan).
The space battles in Star Wars Empire at War are also pretty good, just a shame about the ground battles being somewhat meh.

Sins of the Solar Empire is a 4X game isnt it? The Op doesn't want that he wan't something more like the Warhammer 40K space ship table top game called Battlefleet Gothic, (or Spacefleet if youre older)

To Op I dunno how Battlefleet Gothic play but I do know Spacefleet, the closet match to those would be Nexus and those old Star Trek games. Homeworld is more large scale (but better games imo) EDIT actually now I remeber better the scale of Spacefleet is somewhere inbetween, however Homeworld treats each ship like std RTS ground based games. Nexus and those Star Trek games are more like Spacefleet where you can micro manage each ship and they have more indepth subsystems and shields like Spacefleet has 4 directional facing shield banks to each ship.

You referring to the old Star Trek: Armada games? Yeah I was going to recommend those too. They're kinda old, but still might be worth a look.
