Hey guys, I am a fan of games such as Fallout3/Dayz etc.

I am looking for a game that is survival based but somewhat realistic (not block pixel stuff like minecraft/cubeworld).

I have been refered to games such as Metro etc, but I am more of big free roaming maps (Skyrim was a huge + for me). I am not looking for MMO's (not a fan of gear grinding/pvp).

Since I am somewhat of a noob when it comes to my culture in terms of games, would anyone like to point out some games that they think are worth a shot?

Thanks a million!

(To clarify this line: "...as Metro etc, but I am more of big free roaming maps")

What i meant to say is that although I like games with a solid storyline, I tend to love getting lost in a myriad of side-quests and forge my own way without having to somewhat follow a pretty narrow plotline! :)

STALKER: Call of Pripyat is amazing, go play it. It's like Fallout 3 except better in every conceivable way only minus the shallow excuse for roleplaying (I didn't much like Fallout 3 if it isn't obvious).

Just watch this for an example. Fullscreen, turn the sound up:

Other than that want the real hardcore experience? I mean hardcore sandbox survival?

UnReal World

Don't look like much but it's the most realistic portrayal of struggling to survive in a hostile environment out there. It's the Dwarf Fortress of survival games.

Wow, this is what I was expecting from the Escapist peeps.
In 5 mins, you just blew my mind. I didn't even know that this game existed!
You are such a boss!

Buying it right now :D

Does anyone have any other suggestions?
I tend to play a lot so I could use some ideas for later!

There's Miasmata.

I haven't played it, personally, but I've heard good things!

Surprised you haven't heard of the STALKER series before, it's quite well known on the PC. STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl was the first of the series and probably the best in terms of narrative and ambition, while Call of Pripyat was the third game in the series and the most open of the franchise. Clear sky is crap, I don't recommend it.

There's also a large library of mods available for the series. The Complete series is a solid overhaul that does a good job of improving the games visuals and fixing any bugs, but a lot of fans of the series dislike it for making the game easier. For a newbie to the franchise however I highly recommend it! In that video you just saw they were using the Misery mod which essentially overhauls Call of Pripyat to make it harder and more realistic. A lot harder. Very popular for fans of the franchise but extremely unforgiving to newbies which is why I point towards Complete for a first playthrough, then if you like it and want more of a challenge graduate to Misery on a second playthrough.

Either way have fun. Shadow of Chernobyl and Call of Pripyat are both great experience. Chernobyl is bigger but more linear, whereas Pripyat is less focused but a lot more open for exploration and survival. Both are great.

I recommend playing STALKER in order; Shadow of Chernobyl is the first in the series, then Clear Sky, then Call of Pripyat. You will understand the storyline and enjoy the games more. I still play the games from time to time.

State of Decay is cheap on Steam or Xbox Live. It's not exactly what you've described, but it's a 3rd person sandbox zombie survival game where anyone of your characters can die.

It's ridiculously addictive too.

While the STALKER games have more survival elements in them than Metro or Fallout, they're still fundamentally open world shooters more than actual "survival games" in the vein of Day Z or State of Decay. Still...they absolutely fantastic at what they do, and Pripyat is arguably the most atmospheric game in the history of GAMING, let alone the genre.

Make sure you mod it up. The video you were watching was using the Misery mod, which is a pretty far encompassing mod that makes the entire game a lot more difficult.

Rust is pretty fun, me and my friend busted our asses and took nearly an entire day of work to built a shitty two story house out of wood planks. We have hatchets, a home crafted revolver, a 9mm pistol and two single shot shotguns to defend ourselves with. Heck, you even have to be inside when you log off, otherwise you can actually be murdered in your sleep.
