Recently, I've been in a mood to replay Metal Slug. At the same time, though, I don't want to play Metal Slug anymore because I've played them so much over the course of my life, I already know those games by heart. So in order to scratch my itch, I started Googling for clones and games inspired by it.

The closest thing I can compare this search to is searching for a manga similar to Berserk - to many people Berserk is just a manga about a badass, muscular dude, wielding a giant sword and fighting demons and nothing else, and likewise, Metal Slug to many people seems to be just a 2D sidescrolling game, where you shoot things. They don't seem to understand at all what made Metal Slug so good, and their suggestions either somewhat resemble the MS games on a superficial level, while having completely different gameplay (looking at you, Mercenary Kings), or don't have anything to do with them, other than being 2D run n' gun games.

"What exactly was it, that made Metal Slug stand out from other 2D sidescrolling shooters, then, ninja?", you might ask. In short - it was fast-paced, had an incredible amount of attention put into small details (mainly in form of things you could destroy on the stage), the combat was satisfying as all hell, mainly due to how over the top violent every enemy's death was, and the further you went into each game, the more batshit insane it was (especially the bosses).

Here's a short video of the fifth stage from the first game, for those of you who haven't played any Metal Slug games, to sort of see what I mean.

Any suggestions? PC is preferred, but pretty much anything, apart from the current and the one before it generation of consoles goes. Thanks in advance for the help.

It's really difficult for me to know for sure, having played no metal slugs neither my incoming attempt at a recommendation, but from the datas provided and collected maybe Mother Russia Bleeds could be some sort of thing that could be close?

Mother Russia Bleeds is a beat 'em up, while what I'm looking for is a run n' gun game. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Also, I've taken people who haven't played any Metal Slug games in their life into account. That's why I posted the gameplay video.

I know of a few, but most of them aren't on PC tho:
Pretty much as straight up clone. Only on Nintendo DS
This is the HD version, but it started out as a free flash game on Newgrounds before becoming a full-fledged commercial release. The commercial release had a PC version, iirc.

There's also Demon Front and Dolphin Blue, but as far as I know, those never made it out of the arcade. Maybe Broforce, but that more Contra than Metal Slug.

@Chimpzy

All of these are fantastic suggestions (well, maybe not Broforce), especially Commando: Steel Disaster and Dolphin Blue. I'll try and see if I can't get my hands on them somehow. Thanks a lot.

Gunstar?

I mean, it's got the game play I think (it's been a while since I've played it) but I don't think it has the same level of over-the-top mayhem.

Was Mercenary Kings not supposed to be a spiritual successor to Metal Slug?

You mean Gunstar Heroes? The overall pacing is similar, but I don't think it has enough similarities to be counted as "similar to Metal Slug" in my book.

No. It only has similar artstyle. Gameplay-wise it's pretty slow and deliberate, and stages are objective-oriented.

Intrusion 2 is a side scrolling shooter that is pretty kick ass. Not quite the same as Metal Slug though since Intrusion 2 uses physics based movement, but its still quite fun.

Other than this the only ones that come to mind are other Metal Slug games.

Thanks, but I'd say "not quite the same as Metal Slug" is an understatement. The gameplay is completely different - way slower and very reliant on its physics gimmick.

Its more like Metal Slug then most side scrolling games you will find. Most of them are Metroidvania or platformers. I really can't think of any pc games like metal slug besides metal slug or emulating contra.

In that case, no offense, but this thread clearly isn't targeted towards you, as I'm looking for people who do know games similar to Metal Slug. Also, just because you can't think of any, doesn't mean they don't exist.
