Hello there.

If anybody here is a Dwarf Fortress player, you know that it can be kind of hard to keep track of dwarves names. At first, I nicknamed them after some of my friends. However, the dwarf population quickly overtook that. As such, I'm looking for names. If anybody wants a dwarf named after them, let me know. If you include any further specifics I'll do my best to accommodate. I'll post a screencap of their description after naming them.

Who else on this forum plays it? The user groups I found seem pretty dead. What advice/stories do you have about the game?

I'll start with a recent story. Early in one of my fortress' life I had a large amount of dogs. They kept breeding and breeding. I believe I had about 15-20 dogs running around and only 16 dwarfs. I learned how to train war dogs, so I turned 15 of them into war dogs and had them wander around the fortress halls. Not even 5 minutes after that, I was attacked by an elf caravan that went berserk after walking by. Never found out the reason, but I suspect the reason was all the logs I hadn't put into storage yet. (For the uninitiated, Elves are like hippies: smelly, dirty, and hate when you mess with the environment.) I was alerted to 3 elves running at my fortress, trying to kill my woodcutters. They only made 1 hit, which alerted the war dogs I had just trained. Poor elf didn't stand a chance.

I play it, so feel free to dwarf me. Make me some kind of smith or glassworker, if you can.

My simple advice is: build lots of doors. If you ever get invaders, it'll be a simple matter to lock the doors they haven't seized yet and build walls behind them. Then you can reconnect the sealed-off chambers and reestablish your fort.

If you want to interact with the DF community, generally it's best to do so on the forums at bay12. It's the official site and they're always very busy.
