So this comes out tomorrow and im wondering if anyone even knows it exists.
[sub][sub]Though of course it wouldnt be the first time Squeenix failed to market a game...[/sub][/sub]

It looks to be a classical style JRPG that seems to be mimicking the gameplay of Trails in the Sky.

The only other thing i can really say about it is that its from the same studio responsible for I Am Setsuna.

Never heard of it (though I'm hardly an avid follower of the JRPG scene either).

If its from that Squeeniz retro-faux-indie subsidiary, I wouldn't expect too much from them. Perhaps judging them off one game is harsh, but they take too much influence and not enough good ideas to my previous experience.

Out of curiosity was wrong with I am Setsuna? I found it to be a nice little game. For 40$ it was pretty decent. Like a 2D chrono trigger gameplay with FFX story.

I saw lost sphere, and scoffed at the balls of these guys to charge 70$

It could very well be a good game, but its demo is atrocious.

Best way to unsell altnameJag on a game: drop me in the middle of a chapter with no exposition, toss jargon my way, and expect me to know how to manage a full party of people.

Just bland overall in its presentation really. Besides the obvious unyielding snow world, everything felt just kind of forgettable and dull. Some way too obvious takes from Crono Trigger (Like the not-actually villain changing to a party member in the final act). Some rehashing of stuff without fixing the problems (positional based techniques with no ability to control your position, and triple-teching being an utter waste).

For a negative that I'd pin solely on them that doesn't revolve around blind nostalgia recycling, the obtuse method of unlocking abilities and the insane grind that necessitated adding a dungeon to do the grinding in to it.

(I'm fully aware thats probably not even considered grindy to the actual JRPG audience, but even when I was chewing through them in the SNES days, I always preferred the ones with a bit of flow to them (I remember hating Secret of Evermore because of that stuff where you had to grind ingredients to grind-cast the spell to level up the spell, for instance)

I knew it exists, I played the demo last year and quite enjoyed it so I pre ordered it. Hopefully it'll turn up today so I can be playing it tonight.

Been reading review and it sounds like a forgettable JRPG straight out of the late 90/early 2000. Maybe I'll get it if it's 50% off but nothing worth grabbing at launch.

I caught a bit of an LP of it, so I'll give them credit for fixing the positional ability thing.

Visual style is still just that dull one that Setsuna had, with seemingly more leaning towards weird nostalgia for basic and sometimes janky 3d models that were entirely due to the horrible early days of 3d.

Yeah I just couldn't get into that demo.

It's especially bad when you compare it to the Octopath Traveler demo, which is fantastic.

Ok, I've been playing this a little bit over the last couple of days, I'm not too far into it due to my limited play time in general. But so far my opinion is that it is alright. Only alright. The visuals when you are in a town or dungeon are quite pretty, but when you go out into the world map, it is pretty boring to look at with the basic mountains, forests and towns depicted in the most basic way. There is nothing to do in the world map apart from walk to the next destination, pick up sparkly bits or reveal more of the map by 'magic', which is disappointing and boring.

The story so far is pretty poor, I'm hoping that its going to start picking up soon. However, the characters, I don't think they are going to get any better. Tanaka and Lumina are basically there to dump exposition on the player, Van is mysterious and grumpy and exists almost entirely to be foil to Locke. Oh my God, Locke. I hate him and every stupid word that falls out of his mouth. It is obvious that he is supposed to be the comic relief and he falls into the JRPG trope of being the over earnest, headstrong and stupid character and it just doesn't work. I almost cheered when he nobally sacrificed himself, but it seems that he is going to be ok, unfortunately. I don't know if the story and the character dialog has been badly translated from Japanese, but that might explain a lot as well as explaining why I don't seem to be forming any attachment to these characters.

The combat however is pretty good fun and I have enjoyed it whenever the game has let me free to fight the bad guys, it just doesnt seem to be much of it. Its basically restricted to dungeons and other little places and maybe a town every now and then. You walk into a battle, you can take them by surprise, slightly by surprise or not by surprise at all and then you spend the fight waiting for various bars to fill up so you can give the enemies a smack. You can move around to give you a bit position to hit the enemy or multiple enemies and if you have your momentum meter filled, you can hit them a bit harder. Its fun, but like I say, not enough of it.

Going to play it a bit more and see if I can get the story and the characters to click with me, but if it doesn't, then I don't see me finishing it. Is anyone else playing this game, I'd like to see if anyone else has similar thoughts.

The best example I saw was "Seems like its made in a factory.". Which, well, the sub-studio is literally called "Tokyo RPG Factory". Its kind of like Harlequin romance novels or the mass-produced D&D novels. They know what they're aping, and they know the formulas, but all the vision and passion seems to be kind of missing, and it seems like they kind of just cycle around basic plots and characters with new names.
