Ever listen to a song? Like REALLY listen to the song? How some of the lyrics seem to grasp your attention? I love the lyrics that fit the mood you're in the current moment. Or the lyrics that describe how you feel about yourself, someone or a certain situation. I love songs with meanings and lyrics that have some weight to it. So what are your favorite lyrics? I'll start off with some:

Lord I know,
I'm just digging my own grave
Can someone save myself from me?

"Digging My Own Grave" - Thrice

A song of self destruction and how small mistakes can lead into bigger ones. I've heard the phrase "You dug your own grave, now lay in it" so many times. I'm trying to learn how to avoid mistakes that are going to backfire on me.

- - -
Know that you can set your world on fire
If you are strong enough to leave your doubt

"Walking on Air" - Kerli

I just love these lyrics in particular because it seems like regardless of who you are you can make something that can completely revamp your life. Nothing wrong with a little change in your life, right?

- - -
Pain without love
Pain, I can't get enough
Pain, I like it rough
Cause I'd rather feel pain than nothing at all"

"Pain" - 3 Days Grace

Eh, I just listened to this a lot during a lot of break-ups. Just loved how it's better to feel pain than becoming emotionally numb.

- - -
I want to look in your eyes, pass the mask you hide behind
I want to know all of you, what makes you smile what makes you blue.
You know I want to please you, take you so high. Forget that you can't
fly were just spaceships in the night.

"Loveman" - Robin Thicke

This song reminds me so much of my boyfriend. Some the things he would say to me or HAVE said to me in the past. It makes me feel all giggly and smile every time I hear it and think of him.

- - -
Tell me how I finally figured it out,
That now you're caught in the things
You said you'd never do.
And now its starting to show
Like her skin fell out out of her clothes,
She's got a list of moves to make.

"Now The One You Once Loved Is Leaving" - Lydia

Just a good break-up song. Especially if you look up the rest of the lyrics, it seems like it's 2 people telling their story. One from the female perspective and the other from the male perspective. Good times, great song. Give it a listen.

- - -
I could keep going but, these are some that I really listen on my playlist. Now you!

EDIT: Place lyrics in spoilers if they are more than 10 lines long. Also, actually discuss the lyrics and what they mean to you. Don't just list the lyrics. It's not personally if you're just jabbing song lyrics into our eyes.

Fitter, happier, more productive,
comfortable,
not drinking too much,
regular exercise at the gym
(3 days a week),
getting on better with your associate employee contemporaries ,
at ease,
eating well
(no more microwave dinners and saturated fats),
a patient better driver,
a safer car
(baby smiling in back seat),
sleeping well
(no bad dreams),
no paranoia,
careful to all animals
(never washing spiders down the plughole),
keep in contact with old friends
(enjoy a drink now and then),
will frequently check credit at
(moral) bank (hole in the wall),
favors for favors,
fond but not in love,
charity standing orders,
on Sundays ring road supermarket
(no killing moths or putting boiling water on the ants),
car wash
(also on Sundays),
no longer afraid of the dark or midday shadows
nothing so ridiculously teenage and desperate,
nothing so childish - at a better pace,
slower and more calculated,
no chance of escape,
now self-employed,
concerned (but powerless),
an empowered and informed member of society
(pragmatism not idealism),
will not cry in public,
less chance of illness,
tires that grip in the wet
(shot of baby strapped in back seat),
a good memory,
still cries at a good film,
still kisses with saliva,
no longer empty and frantic
like a cat
tied to a stick,
that's driven into
frozen winter shit
(the ability to laugh at weakness),
calm,
fitter,
healthier and more productive
a pig
in a cage
on antibiotics.

weep for yourself, my man,
you'll never be what is in your heart
weep little lion man,
you're not as brave as you were at the start
rate yourself and rape yourself,
take all the courage you have left
wasted on fixing all the problems that you made in your own head

but it was not your fault but mine
and it was your heart on the line
i really fucked it up this time
didn't I, my dear?

tremble for yourself, my man,
you know that you have seen this all before
tremble little lion man,
you'll never settle any of your score
your grace is wasted in your face,
your boldness stands alone among the wreck
learn from your mother or else spend your days biting your own neck

but it was not your fault but mine
and it was your heart on the line
i really fucked it up this time
didn't I, my dear?

Oh and if you're interested, Little Lion Man is by Mumford and Sons, and Fitter, Happier is by Radiohead.

He's a fairy feller
Ah ah the fairy folk have gathered
Round the new moon's shine
To see the feller crack a nut
At night's noon time
To swing his axe he swears
As he climbs he dares
To deliver the master stroke

Ploughman wagoner will' and types
Politician with senatorial pipe
He's a dilly dally oh
Pedagogue squinting wears a frown
And a satyr peers under lady's gown
He's a dirty fellow
What a dirty laddie-oh

Tatterdemalion and the junketer
There's a thief and a dragonfly trumpeter
He's my hero ah
Fairy dandy tickling the fancy
Of his lady friend
The nymph in yellow (can we see the master stroke)
What a quaere fellow

Ah ah ah ah ah ah
Ah ah ah ah ah ah
Soldier sailor tinker tailor ploughboy
Waiting to hear the sound
And the arch magician presides
He is the leader

Oberon and Titania watched by a harridan
Mab is the queen and there's a good apothecary man
Come to say hello
Fairy dandy tickling the fancy
Of his lady friend
The nymph in yellow
What a quaere fellow
The ostler stares with hands on his knees
Come on mister feller
Crack it open if you please

Just genius, a song about a painting ffs.

Well, he went down to dinner in his Sunday best
Excitable boy, they all said
And he rubbed the pot roast all over his chest
Excitable boy, they all said
Well, he's just an excitable boy

He took in the four a.m. show at the Clark
Excitable boy, they all said
And he bit the usherette's leg in the dark
Excitable boy, they all said
Well, he's just an excitable boy

He took little Susie to the Junior Prom
Ooh, wa-ooh
Excitable boy, they all said
Oo-ooh, excitable boy
And he raped her and killed her, then he took her home
Ooh, wa-ooh
Excitable boy, they all said
Oo-ooh, excitable boy
Well, he's just an excitable boy

After ten long years they let him out of the home
Excitable boy, they all said
Oo-ooh, excitable boy
And he dug up her grave and built a cage with her bones
Excitable boy, they all said
Oo-ooh, excitable boy
Well, he's just an excitable boy

.. I mean, WTF? This really took me off guard when I really listened to the lyrics.

Lastly
Uh thick cloud caught uh piper clubs tail
The match struck blue on uh railroad rail
The old puff horse was just pullin' thru
'n uh man wore uh peg leg forever
I'm on the bum where the hoboes run
The air breaks with filthy chatter
Oh I don't care there's no place there
I don't think it matters
My skin's blazin' thru
'n my clothes in tatters
'n the railroad looked
Like uh "Y" up the hill of ladders
Ohe shoe fell on the gravel
One stick poked down
Gray of age fell down on uh pair of ears
An eagle shined thru my hole watch pocket
Uh gingham girl baby girl
Passed me by in tears
Uh jack rabbit raised his folded ears
Uh beautiful sagebrush jack rabbit
'n an oriole sang like an orange
His breast full uh worms
'n his tail clawed the evenin' like uh hammer
His wings took t' air like uh bomber
'n my rain can caught me uh cup uh water
When I got into town
Odd jobs mam ah yer horse I'll fodder
I'm the round house man
I once was yer father
Uh little up the road uh wooden
Candy stripe barber pole
'n above it read uh sign "Painless Parker"
Lic-licorice twisted around under uh fly
'n uh youngster cocked 'er eye
God before me if I'm not crazy
Is my daughter
Come little one with yer little dimpled fingers
Gimme one 'n I'll buy you uh cherry phosphate
Take you down t' the foamin' brine 'n water
'n show you the wooden tits
On the Goddess with the pole out s'full sail
That tempted away yer peg legged father
I was shanghaied by uh high hat beaver moustache man
'n his pirate friend
I woke up in vomit 'n beer in uh banana bin
'n uh soft lass with brown skin
Bore me seven babies with snappin' black eyes
'n beautiful ebony skin
'n here it is I'm with you my daughter
Thirty years away can make uh seaman's eyes
Uh round house man's eyes flow out water
Salt water

------------
The realization of his insanity as the song (if I can call it that) progresses. I mean - it's just him, speaking. Great Orange Phosphate line though.

Well those are the ones that spring to mind as having struck me when I really listened to the lyrics.

I can't tolerate your sadness
cause it's me you're drowning
I won't allow any happiness
cause everytime you laugh i feel so guilty

I blame the needs you feed
cause selfish eyes would not see

Am I forced to have any regret?
I've become the lie, beautiful and free
In my righteous own mind
I adore and preach the insanity you gave

Sell me the infection, it's only for the weak
No need for sympathy, the misery that is me
No need for sympathy, it's only for the weak
On bleeding knees i accept my fate

I've lost the ability to paint the clouds
cause it's me you're drowning
Im stuck in this slow-motion dark day
Cause everytime you run, I fall behind

Far away is a place where i hide
The truth that have to be locked away

And so i hear my voice again
The tale of the bitter man, here i am
Shake the silence and hear what it says
The tranquil pride that become the lie

In Flames
Only For the Weak

Bolded parts really stand out.
In a little While
Surely you'll be mine
In a little while I'll be there

In a little while
This hurt will hurt no more I'll be home, love

When the night takes a deep breath
And the daylight has no air
If I crawl, if I come crawling home
will you be there?

In a little while
I won't be blown by every breeze
Friday night running to sunday on my knees

That girl, that girl
she's mine
And I've known her since

since she was a little girl
with spanish eyes

oh, when I saw her, in a pram they pushed her by

Whoo hoo, my how you've grown
well it's been, yeah
it's been a little while

Slow down my beating heart
Man dreams one day to fly
a man takes a rocket ship
into the sky

And lives on a star that's dying in the night
And follows in the trail, the scatter of light
The rest is just a few lines repeating. Hands down U2's most beautiful song. I can guarantee you can't guess what this song is about, though.

EDIT:Scratch that, U2's most beautiful song with the possible exception of Kite.

Depressing or angry songs seem to the trick pretty well:

At school the choices I made were rock and roll bands and getting good grades.
But brains and wearing all black, to some of these guys, it's like a red flag.

The taste of anyone's fist is not a good vibe, or something I've missed.
I was intimidated, assaulted, and for what? I hope they choke, choke, choke, choke.

Shrugged off the shit in my youth like growing up pains or loosing a tooth, but it's not a matter of age.
They're everywhere. These people don't change.

When I was in New York a woman tried to start a fight with me because she thought I was Jewish,
and somehow it felt wrong to tell her the truth that I wasn't.

I pray to god she chokes, choke, choke, choke, choke, choke, choke, choke.

You're going home in a fucking ambulance, you're going home in a fucking ambulance,
you're going home in a fucking ambulance, WE'RE ALL GOING HOME IN A FUCKING AM-BUL-ANCE".

I once saw a man
With blood on his face
From beating up black kids
I could hardly breathe

Your race, your faith, just your clothes incite. They drink, they fight, it's not safe out tonight.

Your race, your faith, just your clothes incite. They drink, they fight. So don't go out tonight.

Don't run!

If your Mum and Dad hit you as a child
I feel sad for you, but that's no excuse for it
Who says it's ok to behave in this way? I can't help but feel it's us
For the sake of our own skin we walk away,
And it's like we all say 'that's alright, that's alright, that's alright'.

That's alright, that's alright, that's alright,
That's alright, that's alright.

I wish I had the guts to stand up for myself,
and for others as well, against these fuckers.

or

History is made, not repeated
and you hide behind words that make you feel needed
and what you read in those books made you so conceited
so in order for love to be true
my dreams will have to
become my only rules

I want a warning
I want a warning
I want something more than a warning
I've been warned about you
I see through all of your promises and warnings

Wake me up on into a world outdated
and the older you get the more you seem jaded
as you search for the quotes to make it seem complicated
so in order for love to be true
even my nightmares
become my only rules

I want a warning
I want a warning
I want something more than a warning
I've been warned about
I see through all of your promises and warnings

I want a warning
I want a warning
I want something more than a warning
I've been warned about you
I've seen through
for a promise of a warning

The human condition is inherit claustrophobia.
Compression of my space made complete.
I would rip out my own entrails by hand just to be alone.
Inanity rolls total through this sphere.
Ostracized for clarity of vision.
A dream unrealized of solitude that I should decend into autonomy,
And know the pain of fellowship no more.
I feel nothing but a lack of space.
Paradox of socialization results in duress.
Rife with hostility, what has caused me so much hate?

Humanity. Exterminate with extreme prejudice.
"Black Label" - Lamb of God

Anti-social angst is nothing new, but some people take it a bit more...personal than others.
I can really relate to this especially the bolded lines.

Fitter, Happier isn't really a song; more a musical statement. You'd have to listen to the whole album (OK Computer) to fully comprehend its significance.

As for lyrics:
in the year of thirty-nine
Assembled here the volunteers
In the days when lands were few
Here the ship sailed out into the blue and sunny morn
The sweetest sight ever seen
And the night followed day
And the story tellers say
That the score brave souls inside
For many a lonely day
Sailed across the milky seas
Never looked back never feared never cried

Dont you hear my call
Though youre many years away
Dont you hear me calling you
Write your letters in the sand
For the day Ill take your hand
In the land that our grand-children knew

in the year of thirty-nine
Came a ship from the blue
The volunteers came home that day
And they bring good news
Of a world so newly born
Though their hearts so heavily weigh
For the earth is old and grey
Little darlin well away
But my love this cannot be
Oh so many years have gone
Though Im older than a year
Your mothers eyes from your eyes cry to me

Dont you hear my call
Though youre many years away
Dont you hear me calling you
Write your letters in the sand
For the day Ill take your hand
In the land that our grand-children knew

Dont you hear my call
Though youre many years away
Dont you hear me calling you
All your letters in the sand
Cannot heal me like your hand
For my life still ahead pity me
It's an example of what would happen if a spacecraft left Earth travelling near the speed of light. Relativistic effects would mean that when he returned, less time would have passed for him than for the people back on Earth, and so he would be in the 'land that his Grand-children knew'.

It might not be the right time
I might not be the right one
But there's something about us I want to say
Cause there's something between us anyway

I might not be the right one
It might not be the right time
But there's something about us I've got to do
Some kind of secret I will share with you

I need you more than anything in my life
I want you more than anything in my life
I'll miss you more than anyone in my life
I love you more than anyone in my life

"Something About Us" - Daft Punk.

The lyrics are pretty self-explanatory. Y'know when you're in a relationship, somewhere in our heads, we have a small sense of doubt that creeps up on our optimism in the relationship. Even with that in mind, it still feels like there's a special connection between you and who you're with. This is a great song to express my relationship.

In times where I felt like...Hollow and not really there I used to be obsessed with this album called "Mechanical Animals" by Marilyn Manson which represented all the feelings I was having. I thoroughly recommend it due to the artistic perfection of the album

"Oh the words that he spoke
Seemed the wisest of philosophies
There was nothing ever gained by a wet thing called a tear
When the world is too dark, and I need the light inside of me
I'll walk into a bar
And drink fifteen pints of beer"

The Pogues; Streams of Whiskey

I think it's quite a beautiful view to have on sadness, even if it has a bit of a comic slant to it.

Now you know good and well that Serj always has some sort of meanings linked up to the song. Haha. This is a good song. I agree. It makes me wanna get up and dance, but most of SOAD's songs make me wanna dance.

the song The Con by Tegan and Sara always reminds me of back when i was in highschool, i was a foster kid and i got moved from place to place, and school to school so i was always the outcast and i never fit in because i was always the new kid.. this song reminds me of when i fell for this guy in junior year and i felt he was actually interested in me, turns out he was just trying to find someone's pants to get into.. so he was my first bad heartbreak

I listened in,
Yes, I'm guilty of this, you should know this.
I broke down and wrote you back,
Before you had a chance to.
Forget forgotten, I am moving past this,
Giving notice.
I have to go,
Yes, I know that feeling, know you're leaving.

Calm down, I'm calling you to say,
I'm capsized, erring on the edge of safe.
Calm down, I'm calling back to say,
I'm home now and coming around, coming around.
Nobody likes to,
But I really like to cry.
Nobody likes me,
Maybe if I cry.

Spelled out your name and list the reasons.
Faint of heart, don't call me back.
I imagine you and I was distant, not existent.
I followed suit and laid out on my back,
Imagine that.
A million hours left to think of you and think of that.

Calm down, I'm calling you to say,
I'm capsized, staring on the edge of safe.
Calm down, I'm calling back to say,
I'm home now and coming around, coming around.
Nobody likes to,
But I really like to cry.
Nobody likes me,
Maybe if I cry.

Now that I've lost you, it kills me to say (hurts to say)
I try to hold on as you slowly slip away
I'm losing the fight
I've treated you so wrong, now let me make it right (make it all right)

- Avenged Sevenfold, "Almost Easy"

--

Apparently a song about a man who has not appreciated the woman who used to be his. The song continues to ask for her back, for her to come back to him, as he continually persists in that he's not insane. That suggests he had hurt her or frightened her away.

Just a cool song.

All that you touch
All that you see
All that you taste
All you feel.
All that you love
All that you hate
All you distrust
All you save.
All that you give
All that you deal
All that you buy,
Beg, borrow or steal.
All you create
All you destroy
All that you do
All that you say.
All that you eat
And everyone you meet
All that you slight
And everyone you fight.
All that is now
All that is gone
All thats to come
And everything under the sun is in tune
But the sun is eclipsed by the moon.

Eclipse by Pink Floyd
I like the song. To me, it says everything we do, essentially, is meaningless in the big picture.

Or something.

To me, about the lyrics I most relate to would be Where'd You Go, by Fort Minor

Where'd you go?
I miss you so,
Seems like it's been forever,
That you've been gone.

She said "Some days I feel like shit,
Some days I wanna quit, and just be normal for a bit,"
I don't understand why you have to always be gone,
I get along but the trips always feel so long,
And, I find myself trying to stay by the phone,
'Cause your voice always helps me to not feel so alone,
But I feel like an idiot, workin' my day around the call,
But when I pick up I don't have much to say,
So, I want you to know it's a little fucked up,
That I'm stuck here waitin', at times debatin',
Tellin' you that I've had it with you and your career,
Me and the rest of the family here singing "Where'd you go?"

I miss you so,
Seems like it's been forever,
That you've been gone.
Where'd you go?
I miss you so,
Seems like it's been forever,
That you've been gone,
Please come back home...

You know the place where you used to live,
Used to barbecue up burgers and ribs,
Used to have a little party every Halloween with candy by the pile,
But now, you only stop by every once and a while,
Shit, I find myself just fillin' my time,
With anything to keep the thought of you from my mind,
I'm doin' fine, I plan to keep it that way,
You can call me if you find that you have something to say,
And I'll tell you, I want you to know it's a little fucked up,
That I'm stuck here waitin', at times debatin',
Tellin' you that I've had it with you and your career,
Me and the rest of the family here singing "Where'd you go?"

I miss you so,
Seems like it's been forever,
That you've been gone.
Where'd you go?
I miss you so,
Seems like it's been forever,
That you've been gone,
Please come back home...

I want you to know it's a little fucked up,
That I'm stuck here waitin', no longer debatin',
Tired of sittin' and hatin' and makin' these excuses,
For why you're not around, and feeling so useless,
It seems one thing has been true all along,
You don't really know what you've got 'til it's gone,
I guess I've had it with you and your career,
When you come back I won't be here and you can sing it...

Where'd you go?
I miss you so,
Seems like it's been forever,
That you've been gone.
Where'd you go?
I miss you so,
Seems like it's been forever,
That you've been gone,
Please come back home...
Please come back home...
Please come back home...
Please come back home...
Please come back home...

I'm not quite sure why, but the lyrics for that song just hit home for me. I find a lot of Shinoda's lyrics are like that, stuff I can relate to
