Magic World Online (MMO) First Impression

Due to the need for vacation from moderating the Conquer Online forums, I decided to try out Magic World Online which was created by the makers of Phoenix Dynasty Online, Ingle games Ltd. Note that one of the minds at Ingle is none other than engputer who also had a hand in the development of Conquer Online I understand but that lets get into this preview shall we.

In terms of story I will say the game is World of Warcraft influenced. The story does not speak of multiple races; however the large war, rebirth of the people affected and need for a new war with a third evil that needs to be defeated somewhere are all given by the story. I paraphrase below.

The story tells the tale of humans who lived under rule of the gods and on a day of worship the god of devils decided that the humans were not giving him the praise he deserved, and with his troops decided to crash the party. The god of gods sent out his squad to the rescue the humans which were defeated by the might of the devils and their king. In a moment of desperation to prevent the devils from conquering the universe, he sealed the devils in hell or some alternate dimension from the world of humans.

The human survivors of the ordeal split off into 2 parties, searching for new lands to call home and after establishing empires in two opposite locales they find themselves at war with each other over a lost artifact from their god of gods and a magic crystal mine. Predictably the god of devils has also become freed from hell and has infected all of the continents creatures making them devils except the remaining humans. Now it is up to you and other players you meet to defeat the threat attacking the land.

Do not get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with similar story lines. In most forms of media today I think this would be considered flattery by Blizzard as they can smile knowing their story is popular. However upon reading the story I am tempted to think that the story could have been written better by Ingle. Again I know its only a storyline for a MMORPG and no one pays much attention to these things as players are just interested in game play but the story was one disappointment that I had upon meeting the game.

Among the features Magic World Online promises, most notable are the video chat and the in game AI which can assist the player in leveling up. The video chat is merely your real life picture replacing your avatar although I think this is available with a web cam. I have not used this option when I initially played and to be truthful after I test this out just to see it in action once I do not plan to use it. Call me fearful but I do have a concern with posting real life pictures out with games and on game forums. Some people do not take the critiques well and while I could not give a flying fuck what some jerk thinks of my looks, I can not think the same way for the insecure girl who trusted someone they met in game and was hoping to be accepted by that person only to be called ugly or something. The video chat is a bit something new but overall it does not seem something to go baby over and you will still have to resort to typing as I have seen no mention of an in game voice chat.

The in game AI on the other hand adds a benefit for those players not always available to play the game as everyone else. Through the use of an in game bot, there is no need to search and import a foreign bot into the game which could eventually mean reduced cases in key loggings and characters hacked by 3rd party programs. While these are all good benefits, I can not help the feeling that this will hurt the game more as it will have players using bots a lot more than actually playing the game. Sure there is not bot for the games life skills but the grind/experience part can be done for you making it particularly easy for one to bot up a main with a support cast.

During my initial play, here is the list of things I noticed:

  • *Game appears to be quest based.

    * Font is small (smaller in some boxes)

    * Auto path feature that allows you to click on your character?s destination

    * Music for the game can become annoying easily

Overall the game is still new and it is not a bad game. It is still early and these comments of mine are only an early review from what I have experienced.

Hmm, nice plug in the opening!

The review/preview tells me nothing about the way the game plays. Is it fun? Does it have good graphics? What's combat like?

You can't say that "players are just interested in game play" and then tell us nothing about the game play!
