You see a lot of threads on the Escapist (and everywhere across the internet) with titles like "Such-and-such sucks BECAUSE." The targets of these threads are almost always Triple-A titles that sold millions of copies--your Halos and Call of Dutys. Sometimes the criticism is legitimate, sometimes it isn't. Yet you rarely see threads praising these games. Still, people must like them, because they sell like hot cakes.

My question to you, Escapist, is what blockbuster, Triple-A title did you love? Just name the game and say why you liked it more than most mainstream releases.

For me, the game is Grand Theft Auto 4. There are numerous gameplay flaws and its sometimes repetitive, but I got really into the story. I love the way the game escalates over time. You start out driving around and being straight up bored. But by the end, you're involved with several mobs and gangs and are robbing banks and flying attack helicopters. Plus I think thats the only game I've ever played where moral choices are handled appropriately.

What do you think? Praise your own picks but try not to bring down other peoples'. Lets keep this thread happy.

I love Pokemon! It's one game I can spend months playing without getting tired of it.

Assassin's Creed. I love faffing about in the worlds and yeah, the story is pretty shitty, but I admit that I love most of the characters and the gameplay is solid enough for me to not have too many complaints.

I love lots of mainstream games. Halo, Uncharted, inFamous, The Legend of Zelda, Assassins Creed (well, I really enjoyed two, but I have not got around to playing Brotherhood yet...), Fable (See: Assassins Creed), The Elder Scrolls, Half Life, etc, etc.

Does the Orange Box count as mainstream? Other than that I love the Zelda series and most of the Metroid games. I think Link to the Past and Super Metroid are my favorites.

I also like Oblivion and Fallout 3, but I've never got far in the former and I've been estranged from the latter after the crappy ending.

I'm planning on trying Gears of War 1. I rented Gears 2 once and it only really came alive in the urban environments near the end, and I think Gears 1 has more of them.

I really love the Rock Band games. They're simply the most fun, rewarding music games I've ever played, and they tend to have freakin' awesome music, to boot.

Fooking Halo Reach. Also Gears of War, and my favorite is I Forgot my Live Password So I Can't Really Check.

The Halos. I just love the story and the fact that it gets much deeper if you go beyond the games.

The Elder Scrolls series is my favorite. I do admit that it's a flawed series, but thanks to the fascinating world behind it, I love it warts and all.

Absolutely all of them. Every single one, those lovable buggers.
Yep, same here. Even Call of Duty. Seriously, what's so damn bad about CoD? It's not innovative, but it's fun, and the multiplayer is pretty good.

Call of Duty 4 had some fantastic multiplayer and a solid campaign too. The CoD series kind of fell off a cliff after that, but I still have the first Modern Warfare to keep me happy.

As people above have said:

Rock Band. (Barely play it, but I love it when I get the chance)
Pokemon.

These aren't as 'mainstream' as say, Halo/CoD, but:

Assassin's Creed
Mass Effect
.. or ANY BioWare game for that fact
PacMan
PacMan
PacMan
PacMan

Red Dead Redemption and the Mass Effect series.

All 3 games are just streets ahead in so many ways in terms of how polished their worlds and characters feel
