Making combat work for Mirror's Edge 2

Well, we all know that a sequel to Dice's critically acclaimed Mirror's Edge is inevitable, and even almost confirmed [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/96466-DICE-Artist-Lists-Mirrors-Edge-2-in-Portfolio].

Well, it may have been discussed before, but combat has to have been the original Mirror's Edge's (that doesn't sound right) weakest point. This is my idea of how they should present combat in ME2 (That's not Mass Effect 2, fyi. :3).

Faith, the game's lead character, is an acrobat. She has no place in using guns because guns aren't applicable in acrobatic first-person games. It slows everything down too much.
As well as guns, Faith used Martial Arts. Now, these were a step up from the guns because it complimented Faith's character as much as the core gameplay, but it still felt slow.

Here's what could work. Alter Faith's Martial Arts so it goes along with the idea of moving forward. Lets say that there is a Blue in Faith's way. She could pounce on him, knocking him down and his gun out of his hand, do a safety roll off of him, and keep moving. Fast, fluid, and you're gone in about a second. If two or more are in her way, she could ram them, basically doing a whole Red-Rover maneuver, an continue on her way.

Moves from the first game would be good as well. The move where you do a wall run, turn, and lunge at an enemy was fast and fluid as well.

These are just some ideas, feel free to add your own.

I just think they should leave the combat out altogether.

The game was most fun when you were just running and jumping and not having to worry about some asshole shooting you and slowing down the lovely fast pace.

I think combat should still be present as an option, but never a necessity.
What always bothered me most about the original ME was the boat and shard levels; wherein you basically had to empty the entire area in order to have a chance of surviving.
That's bad design, and the experience suffered for it.
And it's a real shame, because Mirror's Edge was by far my favourite of that year.

I agree, I loved doing the time trial levels more than the actual game.

If you want to include enemies, just have the odd level where you are being chased ala Trinity in The Matrix. So if you miss a jump or whatever on those particular levels, instead of backtracking to try it again, you are caught and game over.

100% with this. I loved Mirror's Edge for the feeling of freedom it gave me when jumping from rooftop to rooftop, without a human in sight, and having to find the best possible route. Then guys with guns appear. Ugh.

You know what I think?

It should be a sandbox game.
Imagine it, having the entire city to run around in.
Fight the Blues?
Naw, I just feel like running.

So you run away.

It would be awesome
So more like Assassin's Creed with the Mirror's Edge control system?

That would be sweeeeeeeeet...

Ditto that. Half the fun was running AWAY from the combat. Although it was first-person, the combat bits never quite felt like a proper FPS for me, far too clunky and 'caggy handed. Runny-jumpy-climby? I'm all for more of that, I'm sure there's tonnes more they could add in :)

NO, you are wrong and you should feel bad.

The combat needs to be toned down, it was awesome running dropkick a guard then disarming his ate and running away, but it should always be done as you are in motion, running, and I'd rather she never uses guns, just ruins the free flow of the game.

unfortunately, it would close a lot of opportunity if guns weren't available, mainly that you can't run into enemies if they aren't around a corner, cause they'll just pepper you as you try to move forwards.

Yes, i agree with that - they should just forget about combat. This isn't a shooter (or a brawler, for that matter).

I basically played the game as far as I could like that. It was most fun while you were wall running, kicking, disarming, and running like hell.

My top three hopes for the sequel:

1: Open levels - akin to Assassin's Creed
2: No levels that require gun combat
3: A longer single-player story.

Totally agreed.

Sure you could try to avoid the Blues but it made things darn near impossible in some areas. You should be able to ideally get away from them in every situation since the game is one of the few that's not about combat.

Agreed

Parkour isn't really done in confined spaces like they were for many of the levels in ME. Something like Skate, only for Parkour.

Make it open world, and change the combat to a Krav Maga style. Fast, lethal, and wont slow down the game.

This...and messenger side quests would have been nice, that was her job, imagine racing around a huge city to deliver a message, that'd be epic
