Man, sure is nihilistic/misanthropistic/generic-vaguely-hipster-outlook in here.

Seems like every few posters, there's the one that mentions his/her opinion that humanity/life in general is bad (despite how seemingly irrelevant this is to the actual topic). I don't get what it is about this 'community' that encourages this pseudo-philosophical perspective.

It's the internet, if we're not yelling obscenities at each other then we're talking about how superior we are to the rest of the sheeple and about how we're one of the only ones who see the world for what it is.

It's pretty hard to see that you have things easy while you do. If your normal 'benchmark' of emotional state is contempt, then even minor bad things will make you think life is a pile of shit, especially when peoples heads are full of hormones ;)

Ninja'd by the master himself.

OT: This really isn't anything new, just about every forum has the same issue.

Could be worse, not like were 4chan. D:

Yeah, that's kind of how the Escapist works. If you're not feeling like you're better than someone - or, for the hardcore, everyone - you're not doing it right ;D

I'm not having a go, no-no-no, that's just what I can make of the attitudes you refer to :p

Us nerds tend to get a bad break in life, socially, especially during teen/high-school years. I know I did. Maybe that has something to do with it. I've kind of grown out of that mindset now, though. At least, in as much as I still think a fair proportion of people are douchebags, but less than I used to think, and I'm not excessively negative about it. I don't lump the rest of humanity together with the arseholes.

this.

also the internet is made mostly of society's rejects. so expect a lot of whining about the outside world and how much it sucks because it doesn't understand our genius and other things to make ourselves feel better about our lack of social lives.

also, i include myself into this category too, but i'm self-conscious about it.i admit it's mostly my fault for being like this.

It's basically that and anime/furry/transgender stuff nowadays. OH and a daily 'this is why games ARE art!' post.

The forum idea of if I type it, epople will listen, and because my opinion is the word, obviously no one can disagree with me and I'm always right. Which is true in a sense, as long as they keep saying it as an opinion, and not a fact.

I loathe XCD but it sometimes make a good, concise point. This here really is the perfect summary of the Escapist.
To be fair, at least we go to a classy webcomic[footnote]Oxymoron? You decide![/footnote] for our analogous images. Not like 4Chan, which can be summed up by the first page of 'The Art of Trolling' at any given time :p

EDIT: Looking at this thread so far, I'm beginning to draw the conclusion that the only thing we despise and claim superiority over more than the human race in general is - wait for it - The Escapist.

That's right. We are all so high up, we are above ourselves :D

(I don't want anyone to feel like I'm attacking them, I do include myself in this. I can do baseless arrogance as well as the next guy :p)

It reflects nothing but a very profound, chronic, global existential crisis. The western world becomes more dystopian every day. Realizing your life is functionally meaningless kinda sucks. Taking a position against the misanthropic position might seem clever, and by no means is Randall Munroe an idiot, but the reality is it's every bit as contrived and meaningless.

It's a little bit like Marx; people think they're clever for referencing the Opiate quote when indicting religion, never realizing Marx's real point was to absolve it and criticize the critics. And the next step of my point is that I'm no more clever for attacking the anti-misanthropes. Everything is preordained, the script of life has already been written. Nothing anyone can do is new or surprising.

Also, holy shit I'm negative today. Okay, let's run with that. This should be fun.

Life is pretty bad, it's called reality. There's some beauty in walking down the street during a beautiful sunny day but it doesn't hide shit on how brutal mother nature really is. She's a cruel *****, a very cruel *****. And humanities brutal history alone kind of showcases what fucked up shit this world is capable of. Even without human's it's still incredibly brutal.

You know, like insects that lay their eggs inside other insects, leaving them to be eaten from the inside until they die. Kangaroo's repeatedly kick Dingoes in the stomach until they're disembowled. Nature is brutal, humanity is brutal, this entire fucking world is brutal. And I'm sorry, but having a nice day and sticking my dick in a girl won't make me forget that. Yes, there's some good in this world.

And what in the world is a hipster? Sounds like hippie that's trying to be cool. But I digress, beyond how generic a certain opinion may seem I'm sure if you really look at the person they can come out to be a bit more three dimensional then ' your typical generic hipster/ misanthrope.'

I hate hearing any technicolour fairytale bull shit on how the world's 'not really all that bad'. But fine, if anyone thinks this world is a happy ideal place then I hope that reincartion 'really' does exist so they can see what it's like to have their flesh ripped open and eaten alive by a lion. Maybe then I can hear how perfect this world is.

As for the 'irrelevent' comment I suppose I agree. If a comment has nothing to deal with a topic then I fail to see why someone would bother posting it.

(P.S - This was meant to be ironic)

Angst, I'm pretty sure that's all the explanation you need. Just consider the main demographics of the Escapist for a second, you done?
Good, now you understand all you need to know about the community's general attitude towards things.
That, and reading a History book can be a pretty huge downer sometimes. D= And the whole we're all going to die one day thing, and current day events... Then there's also trying to counter the people who seem to think that just about everything everything is super wonderful and happy when it's clearly not...
...Wait a second, aren't I acting this very way by the way I express my thoughts about people who act this way? Hmm...

A point swiftly forgotten when you remember that like 4chan, many people here spam dumb reaction images from MLP in embarrassing quantities. For as much as Escapists put 4chan down they sure due wallow in much of the same filth as them.

I used to have thoughts like that when I was a teenager, but now I know better. I always try to check myself when I start thinking I'm superior to others. Other people I know don't do that because they're conceited little NO! NO! BAD JACK!!!
