The russians have launched an experiment concerning a mission to Mars. They have six volounteers who will be locked in seperate capsules for 3 months (for £5000 a month) where they will do nothing all day and eat foods similar to what astronaughts eat currently. The experiment is designed to test mental health in such conditions which would be present journeying to and from mars. They will be constantly monitered by scientists for any signs of mental instability.

My question is, would you volounteer? And if yes, how do you think you would hold up?

The voices in my head aren't real, but they have very good ideas about what to do to people I hate! Honestly, I'd go so nuts in there. I need at least SOME human contact.

I'm sure the nice Russians would provide activities to do by yourself in your capsule. I would.

I might volunteer, but the thing is, even in space astronauts have human contact so that can be a form of entertainment. Although I wonder how many games of "have you ever" and "would you rather" you van go through before it gets boring.

O joy text. And yes I would, I always wanted to contributed to our quest for the stars. I'd just bring a crapload of books and my DS, that'll keep me busy.

I wonder why their not allowed to do anything inside those capsules. I dont think you need an experiment to know that people will go insane in solitairy confinement.

I think its great someone is doing it glad its not me. I believe going to mars is the furture for mankind. But the first thing we need to do is build a base on the moon then after we get that base built then we need to build a base on ether of the martian moons and put a monster super computer in it so we can terraform Mars the idea of droping poeple on Mars in tents and then terraforming it is insane. terraformation is a extrealy voilent process. better to be on the moon with many satalites doing your reseach. than being on a planet your giving a boispere overhaul.
just my thoughts on Mars

You may bring a suitcase of stuff for yourself, that is all that will be pretty much provided.

(That said, long space travel will be very hard.. Like it has been said, it will take 2 years to get to mars and back. And everyday you will have to be awake, exercising 4-5 hours a day if you want to ever set foot back on earth again. Hmm.. Though you could put it off until the very end, but that could be diastous, what if you couldn't build back your muscle strength in time?)

Not to mention the scientific things you would have to do.

Sounds awful, especially since a team is constantly watching you, so going to the bathroom or other stuff becomes very uncomfortable...

If they let me take a laptop with Dwarf Fortress installed on it, then I'd do that.
You know how the dwarfs do weird things like lock themselves in rooms for months and work on obscure things then go crazy and kill themselves with their creation.

But instead it'd be like you locking yourself away, create an awesome dwarf world then beating yourself to death with your laptop.

I would do it, sure. I would probably make it for the whole three months, but I'm sure I would go insane.

Anyone see the Twilight Zone episode simular to this? It was called 'Where is everybody?'. The episode had a man locked away in a tiny capsul training for an American space program. He went insane in something like 48 hours. Good episode. :)

I could make an artifact from my surroundings...
