So are there any Martial Artists or Enthusiasts out here in the wide world of The Escapists? Whats your style(s), How long have you been practicing? what are your thoughts on the use of Martial Arts or its future?

Personally, I love Martial Arts. When I was a kid I remember my dad, an avid Bruce Lee fan taught me how to punch and from there it continued. I've done Boxing, Southern Crane Kung Fu and Tai Chi. I hope to one day learn Baguazhang and maybe Savate'

NOTE: Martial Arts are not confined to Asian fighting styles. The word Martial of course come from Mars, the Roman God of War. Therefore a Martial Art alludes to a formalized fighting style: Western or Eastern.

I think martial arts are something that need to be preserved through teaching, even though I'm not currently learning a martial art myself. Not only for cultural preservation, but the peace of mind and security that knowledge of a martial art can bring someone is priceless.

Did Karate for two years, a year ago. I quit because I found the teaching style was too hard-ass - I would be yelled at for doing nothing wrong, I started feeling de-motivated.

I can still fight.

Weights are my replacement fitness, now.

A few years of Krav Maga, some Han Moo Do and basics of boxing.

Essentially, boxing for footwork and proper punching, Han Moo Do mainly for takedowns and holds and disarming as well as the how to fall, how to kick etc basics, Krav Maga for some more brutal methods for doing the same as the previous two styles.

Then my teacher changed, he was a hard-ass punk with no talent for passing down the techniques (while he did know them quite well). So I quit. I know I can take care of myself in a fight after the few I've been in. So mainly these days I practice on my own and a few friends who know Krav Maga, Judo and/or Tae Kwon Do, just to keep in shape and the reflex-like counter-moves I trained quite hard to learn.

I'm going to start Aikido sometime. It's hard finding a dojo for it that isn't full around here. Otherwise, I may just take up some other martial art, but the idea behind Aikido interests me.

I haven't really gotten into too many fights in my days, but the ones I have I "won." Mostly because they didn't expect me to fight back and when I did they quit. Otherwise, I'm sure I simply deterred the fights from happening with my appearance.

I've done some Kickboxing and some regular Boxing, got quite good at it but brute strength isn't my forte, so I quit eventually.

I reached my 1st Dan in Karate, but found the forms and teaching too restrictive, while I enjoyed Tae Kwon Do but, at the time I did it, I lacked the physical fitness and stamina to do it properly, although I might try again sometime.

What I'd like to learn is Kendo, but there's no nearby dojos for that, so I guess that'll have to wait.

I've been doing taekwon do for just under a year now and just got my green belt. I still can't punch to save my life but my kicks have become pretty potent, it's an awesome fighting style though and I recommend it. it's a military martial art and is a mix between the art of the foot and karate so it's all good stuff!

I wholeheartedly agree. Nothing wrong with the education you would get from school, its important stuff but what the Martial Arts can teach are universal. Honour, Self Respect and Reliance, Patience.

Absolutely, I'm now seriously considering taking a martial arts course myself.

did karate when i was young.
and i've always really wanted to do kendo and an assortment of hand-to-hand martial arts.

also, my friend was supposed to teach me bo staff, but never got around to it.

and if someone could effectively use capoeira in combat, other than L, that would be awesome.

I lived on the street for most my life, so street fighting dominated my life. I swiftly learnt boxing, and from there it carried on to kickboxing, Muay Thai and joint control. I later took up Wushu, Tae Kwon Do and a lot of Krav Maga. Doing nothing right now but resting my hurt back, but I plan to return to boxing and, if I can, Wushu/Tae Kwon Do.

Caporia (spelling) because it's just beautiful to watch and from my view it's not as strict as some of the more well known disiplines. as it's more free flowing

I was employed as a Self Defense Consultant a couple of years back, and used to teach Go-Kan-Ryu Karate, both to the public and those on an instructors course.

Before that, however, I've done shotokan karate, kickboxing, and wing chun.

I'm currently still practising karate, as well as doing ju-jitsu. I also practice nunchuku.

I grew up watching Jackie Chan movies, and have always had a fascination for martial arts. Those wishing to further study the science of being a warrior, I highly recommend Miyamoto Mushashi's the Book of Five Rings.

I believe in upsetting your oppenants balance while maintaining your own personally but that could work. Whats style(s)?

Stupid question but did you ever consult for movies?
