You can judge them anyway you like. The most popular comparison between the two franchises are the Justice League and the Avengers (In case you didn't know)

Technically, the DC characters are usually oh-so-perfect so they would beat the marvel characters excluding a select few but the Marvel Characters are so much more interesting and they are actually worth looking into. So my vote goes to marvel.

Speaking as someone who never got into comics and only knows them from watching the outside and glimpses into comics via animated tv shows, movies, etc. I like Batman and his rogues gallery but outside of that, I find DC very lacking. I'd have to stick with Marvel I guess besides that.

Speaking as someone who got into comic books about 3 years ago, started with Marvel and quickly moved over to DC, I'd say that DC is a lot better (at least right now).

For the past 7 years, DC's head writers and artists (Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison, Ivan Eis, Ethan Van Skiver, Rags Morales, Doug Moench, Peter J. Tomassi and many more) have completely trumped anything that Marvel have come out with.
Marvel haven't done a good storyline since Civil War and Planet Hulk, back in '07, and nothing good for a while before it either. I've had no reason to invest any time in Marvel right now but DC are owning the comic book world.

I also prefer the characters, for the most part. Yes, Marvel did an amazing job at translating so many of their characters to film over the past few years but, in the comic books, I personally care so much more about the characters of The Flash, the GL Corps, Batman, Tim Drake, Superman, Aquaman etc because of the writing and drawing skills of their current writers/artists.

Plus The New 52 worked so damn well, I was shocked and ecstatic. I'm currently collecting 17 of The New 52 and loving every one of them.

DC also own Dark Horse and Vertigo, two companies which bring out some incredible original stories from some top-notch writers.

So yeah, I'm a huge DC fan and I donno what I'd do without DC Comics.

I'll say DC, but I can't quite say why. I'm just not interested in Marvel characters; they're all well-characterized on paper, but they just seem kinda flat and dull compared to DC. It could be the setting, too. There's virtually no Marvel villains in the same league as DC's (and I'm not just talking about Batman), and I've seen nothing as cool as the emotional spectrum and Lantern Corps from Marvel.

That said, Marvel are definitely ahead of the game when it comes to movies.

Explain. DC's superheroes were originally the more idealised, perfect specimens and it was Marvel who pioneered the more human, relatable characters in comics, but that was fifty years ago. That distinction just isn't there after half a century of inbreeding and ripping each other off.

Why do I have to choose? I love both, I probably read more Marvel, because I'm an X-men fan, but really both companies provide excellent books and I'd be poorer with just one, DC does epic concepts and stories well, whereas Marvel makes characters you really care about. DC also has vertigo which has produced some of the greatest comics ever made.

I'll agree DC has some amazing writers (anyone with Grant Morrison has an unfair advantage), but don't sell marvel short, it's got great work from Mark Waid, Warren Ellis, Mike Carey, Jonathon Hickman, Ed Brubaker, Brian Michael Bendis, Dan Slott, Peter David, Rick Remender, Dan Abett and Andy Lanning, Jason Aaron and more.

Civil War was frankly a terrible storyline, but I agree Marvel's major crisis crossovers of recent years have not been great. They've helped produce some decent books out of them, but for the most part they've been pretty bad.

Just recently though Spider Island was amazing. And the entire cosmic line starting from Annihilation up to Thanos Imperative is some of the best stuff that's been sadly overlooked by a lot of people. The Ultimates universe has been fixed and it's going great.

DC also own Dark Horse and Vertigo, two companies which bring out some incredible original stories from some top-notch writers.
I'm pretty sure Darhorse is still independant. Though DC does own Wildstorm (now defunct) and America's Best Comics.

Okay, you've inspired me to check out some more recent Marvel stuff. I'll admit most of my judgements were based on the crossovers. The Messiah series was awful and I've never read something as badly written as Secret Invasion but I did really enjoy the Dark Avengers storyline so I'll go back and check out Spider Island. Cheers!
Oh and Mark Millar's Ultimates is one of my favourite series' in comic book history so maybe I was being a bit too hard on Marvel before... I just hated all the recent Crossovers so much!

I like 'em both, personally, though it irks me how DC comics were rebooted to something more "realistic and edgy" like Marvel comics...

I prefer DC but only because I had know them better from watching Batman: TAS and Superman which lead me into reading more about the DC universe.
Ok there were those Marvel animated show but only Spiderman and the X-Men were good but I still like Batman:TAS over them.

I tend to read more DC because of the new 52 giving me a place to start and there being like 6 spiderman books. I do find both sides good however my two favorite characters are from both marvel and DC (batman and the punisher)

I liked me some marvel comics all my life. I liked the heroes, villains, and they tended to have more interesting super powers too. (seriously dc how many F.I.S.S (Flying, Invulnerability, Strength, Speed) can you do?)

However, DC is much better at the whole 'elseworlds' concept and I readily enjoy any such offering they give. Old Man Logan and Marvel 1602 was cool and all, but Red Son, JLA: Shogun of Steel, and Gotham By Gaslight? I think we know who wins that contest.

Not a big comics/superhero fan, so any choice I make would be superficial.

Have to go with DC though. Marvel, overall, just seems sillier. Goofier costumes/abilities. DC has Batman. Marvel's got nothing that comes close.

Yeah just recently they managed to undo all the damage Jeph Loeb did to it, Ultimate Hawkeye, Ultimates and Ultimate X-men are all pretty good.

DC: Alternate Timelines, No idea on female characters, Does have Vertigo in its favour, re-writes history all the time.

Marvel: Far better movies, Little idea on female characters, does have House of M/Ultimate, splits universes all the time.

Both alter character background as often as their socks and throws around pointless soap-opera plots.

Only DC has Superdickery.

Only Marvel has One More Day.

It's like comparing Stephen King and Terry Pratchett, both do what they do extremely well, but have some flaws in their work.

It's hard to say. DC has the massive advantage of The Sandman but for some reason they've spent the last decade pretending they don't. They also have the reboot which is a big strike against them. And they killed the WildStorm universe so fuck them.

Marvel on the other hand has Joss Whedon making the Avengers movie which is really awesome. On the other hand they still made One More Day, so fuck them so much.

Ultimately I have to give it to DC but really, I haven't seen either putting out much that's good at the moment so screw both of them.
