Hello fellow Escapist, I just recent brought Mass Effect 2 and wanted to experience first hand what the series was about and looking to get Mass Effect 3 once i have complicated this game. Four hours in already and I am really liking the feel and story of the game and characters background. I'm a huge fan of RPG and Third person gaming with a great story behind it and I was wondering for those who have played ME2, what are your honest thoughts and opinions about the game. Also if or any tips and pointers you can give me about the gameplay I would really appreciate it.

Note I havent played ME1 as I haven't gotten a copy of that for my PS3.

Thank you all.

Do that first. Isn't it downloadable now? You'll miss out a lot by skipping straight to the second game.

Also, don't judge too harshly. We were all disappointed by ME3's ending, and a lot of people have retroactively decided that as a result, the series is shit. Don't let yourself be discouraged by people telling you it was all bad, because it wasn't. ME2 is a great game, you'll have a lot of fun, and you don't need many gameplay tips because you can't fuck up that badly; every class has its strengths.

Thanks and on the PSN Store, last i checked, its in a bundle (1,2 and 3) but cheaper to get one by one via disk copies on amazon brand new with access codes. Silly I know, I don't know what PSN Store don't lower their prices.

Also trust me I am not put off with the whole "the ending sucked" hyped of it all cause I want to go in with my own views and experience of it and it's turning out great.

Talk to Jacob, Garrus, and Tali about Normandy upgrades. You'll be glad you did.

As for the game itself... It was good, very good. In fact, it was so good it kinda blinded everyone to how bad it was. On its own the game is terrific, but it adds absolutely nothing to the overarching plot - It's just faffing about with your crew members. Which itself is pretty cool, but the whole "How do we stop the Reapers" plot gets sidelined in the process. And Mass Effect 3 ends up suffering the consequences.

I'd second the vote to play the first one. I played ME2 when it frist came out without having played the ME1 and thought it was fun but nothing special - it was only when I went back and played the first one that my opinion went up. To be fair, the gameplay is smoother in ME2 (although there are fewer customization options), but IMO what makes the series the characters, and those are more impressive when you get their whole stories.

I strongly recommend playing the first game first.

I don't actually like the first one much, but importing a save adds a lot to the sequels.

You shouldn't need much in the way of gameplay tips unless you're playing on 'hardcore' or 'insanity' difficulties. I'd recommend the Vanguard class as the most fun, although you'll no doubt have already picked a class.

Other than that, talk to your crewmates frequently and, for the love of God, do the loyalty missions (they'll be marked "Help Character X" on the galaxy map. They're some of the best missions in the game and they pay off in slightly nonsensical but satisfying ways.

ME2 is the best of all 3. ME1 had pretty meh gameplay with tiresome RPG-like mechanics and samey baddies and vehicle sections, but it was a good game. ME3 has Hyper-simplified combat and the worst disappointment of an ending ever. ME2 is just better than both.

If you can get by how the entire game is just a subplot with a relatively inconsequential side-enemy the game really has no big flaws. Personally I didn't at all care that the story was a distraction from the reaper threat. In fact, I find it somewhat tiresome when the primary enemy or goal is the only thing that matters. In ME3 the timeline for defeating the reapers is so stringent it feels really stupid that Shepherd would even consider wasting time with side-missions or barking with random idiots about their inconsequential feelings while millions and millions of people are probably dying at those exact moments.

Also, if you sell enough garbage weapons in ME1 you can max out on money without even trying. If you import that character to ME2 you'll have bonus starter resources.

Honestly, Mass Effect 2 is my favorite game in the series. It definitely helps that it's more-or-less a stand-alone Dirty Dozen-style story of building up a team of badass misfits to take on an enemy stronghold. Of the three games, it's the one that I'm most likely to look back on fondly ten years from now.

Not saying the other two are bad. I love the other two. It's just that ME2 was the one I found most compelling.

I'm not really sure if I have any specific advice about the game though. The big one I'd mention has already been brought up: make sure to upgrade the Normandy. It's kinda astounding how many people I talk to that didn't bother and then wonder why their playthrough of ME3 is so much different than mine.

I'll echo what others have said and recommend you go back and get ME1 so that you can import a save into ME2. You don't realize just how much new content is added into ME2 and ME3 because of it. As well, you get to have Wrex. Who is badass.

Tips for ME2 though? Play Mordin, Tali, Jack, and Legion's missions guaranteed. They're all of good quality, but I personally felt that those characters had the best loyalty missions and had the best writing behind it. Though you should play them all, because they're all awesome. For class, I found Vanguard to be the most fun, with Infiltrator being the most awesome. Soldier was also pretty cool since you could slow time down and just murder everyone with the Revenant.

Oh wanted to add. The DLC for the game was fantastic as well! If you decide to look into it, I would suggest Lair of the Shadow Broker, Kasumi, and Overlord in that order. Arrival has the most story impact, but just wasn't as fun or interesting.

Very much go back and play the first one. Fair warning though, the combat runs far more on a dice-roll system than the two sequels.

The reason I say play Mass Effect 1 is to populate Mass Effect 2. The second game feels a bit hollow to me without an import, the cameo appearances may not add much (if anything) to the main story but they make the whole thing feel more alive and far more personal.

You could buy the Genesis DLC, which is a comic style DLC that lets you make some choices from the first game at the start of the second, but to say it is thin would be an understatement. It goes as far to exclude an entire story world.

As to the game itself. The story is disjointed but the individual parts are actually great, Tali's loyalty mission is my favourite part of all three games.

Combat, and I know I'll likely be the odd one out here, I preferred in the first game because it always felt like there was something to do. All too often in Mass Effect 2 I felt like I was just stuck to those chest high walls.

DLC. Just going for the story pay stuff. Kasumi: Stolen Memory is a great little 'heist' DLC that lets you pick up the best SMG available and Kasumi herself is a fun character that can be deadly in combat if you spec her right.

Overlord is dullness personified until about two minutes from the end.

Lair of the Shadow-Broker. Now I'm torn on this because it is one of my favourites but that is because I am a fan of Liara from the first game. A lot of the charm of this DLC comes from whether you like her character and the banter you have. If you've not played the first game a lot of that is going to be lost.

Arrival....If you like the combat in Mass Effect 2 then you'll like this DLC just for the chance to do it solo for a bit. I would comment on the story aspect of it, it was meant to be the 'big' lead-in to Mass Effect 3, but the story in that plays out exactly the same whether you did that or not. Oh no sorry, you get one line of changed dialogue.

Edit: One last piece of advice. Your first run through, don't go for the perfect result. If you get it, that's great, but play how you want to the first time.

I enjoyed ME2, played it a few times with different characters. The only disappointing thing i had was when i was given the handful of files on people to find for my suicide mission. Hated that as when i first read about the game i thought i would be traveling the universe tracking down crew members myself. Not...here you go, i will give you some more files later.

Didnt ruin the game in anyway. Its an awesome game.

Talk to every member of your team as soon as you get back from missions
upgrade the Normandy as much as possible
Feed your fish after every mission or get used to buying new fish

My thoughts on the game?
I love it it's one of my favorite games of all time and talking about it makes me want to play it, but I'm in the middle of a Saint Row run through!

Space Wizards 2 is easily the weakest of the Space Wizards series.
The RPG elements are non-existent, (Inferior to 1 and 3) the gunplay is decent (Better than 1, worse than 3) and the story isn't terribly good. (Worse than 1, and would be worse than 3 if not for 3's ending)
I found 2 to be tolerable. The moment to moment combat was mostly better than 1 with the exception of the removal of the Mako, and swapping the wonderful overheat system for boring thermal clips. You're also far too squishy in 2. Leaving cover for more than a moment causes you to die. 1 and 3 were much better in that regard.

I'd go against everyone here and say: "You don't need to play the first one."

ME1 has a few good points:
- Some really scenic main-mission sequences
- Characters and events that carry over into ME2
- The bouncy Mako rover is kinda fun

But:
- It's graphics are terrible, really terrible, the texture pop-in on the xbox drove me crazy.
- It's combat is awful, the auto cover system is complete shit and never works properly, the enemies are dumber then bricks and just run forward to get murdered one by one, and the "leveling up your accuracy" thing means you can't hit the broad side of a barn for the first half of the game.

If you like games for their gameplay, I'd recommend skipping ME1.

Tip #1: Get the first game and play through it. Not only would most agree that the story is superior, but when you import your save file from ME1 to ME2 you start the game with bonus cash, resources, and skill points. :p

Tip 2: The only Ship upgrades you NEED are the Shields, Armor, and Weapons systems upgrades. Though I would highly suggest getting the one that makes your mineral scanner move faster too. The biggest complaint about ME2 (other than the limited weapon selection) was the planet-scanning necessity for getting resources to get your upgrades. I'm pretty sure they patched it so that the scanner starts out faster than it used to start out, but still getting the upgrade for the scanner definitely helps. I'm pretty sure Miranda is the one who offers it to you.

Tip 3: With regards to the Planet Scanning, you don't have to bother with anything that isn't Rich. If it's not Rich, then it's a waste of time. Even if you don't find all the Rich planets in the galaxy, the ones you do find will give you plenty enough resources so you can leave all the "normal" and "moderate" planets alone.

Tip 4: ME2 is based almost entirely around team dynamic. The trick to making combat easy is to have at least one person who can deal with the various types of protection that enemies have. That means having someone who can use Overload to get rid of Shields, Warp to get rid of Barriers, Warp or Incinerate to tear down Armor, and then pretty much anything hurts'em once they get down to just their health bar. With that in mind, because the Sentinel class has both Overload and Warp, it's arguably the most effective at decimating enemy forces, since there isn't any kind of protection you can't absolutely destroy.

Tip 5: The Viper Sniper Rifle sucks, keep your sniper characters using the Mantis through out the whole game. If you're a sniper, when you're given the chance to pick up a super weapon/add a new weapon choice to your class, get the Widow...it's frickin' awesome.

As for general thoughts: Some things were improved over ME1, other things were downgraded. As I mentioned, a big complaint most had about the games was that planetary exploration had been reduced to scanning planets for resources from space. In ME1, you actually drop down in this big rover/tank to explore planets that you can land on. Most of them have a Space Pirate or Mercenary base or something on them, and those are all connected to side-quests. But even then, there were people who had their complaints about the rover/tank because almost every planet you land on, you'll land in the middle of a giant, jagged mountain range that makes navigating it rather tedious.

The story was solid, but a lot of people also didn't like how they took out a lot of the guns. In the first game, there were actually stores where you went out to buy guns and armor with different stats. In this game each weapon class (pistol, sub-machine gun, assault rifle, and sniper rifle) each has one upgrade (unless you get the DLC, then you get a few more) and one super version. All in all, though, I found the game to be quiet enjoyable, though you really should be playing ME1 first otherwise the full extent of the story won't have as much an effect on you as it should.

Thank you all.
It's well worth hunting a version that includes all the DLC, Overlord is excellent, the others are ok to good but collectively add a lot to the game.

Mass Effect 2... Ehh. Where do I begin? Fucking. Thermal. clips.

Mass Effect 1 was an RPG with varied third-person shooty bits, Mass Effect 2 was turned into a generic third-person shooter with minimal RPG bits. They took everything that was good about ME1 and dumbed it down, and instead of smoothing the rough bits, they completely removed them and replaced them with way worse parts.

I loved playing an Infiltrator in ME1, I was a Sniping god. In ME2, given the fact that it's just a corridor after corridor and severely limited ammo supplies, it's neigh impossible to play a sniper. The Infiltrator is reduced to a shitty fireball hurling wizard.

Mass Effect 2 was a brilliant game that was so incredibly subtle people still don't believe me when I tell them that.
Unfortunately too subtle, it would seem, as Mass Effect 3 ends up delivering the same plot points from the previous game but far more hamfisted since people didn't get it the first time around.
Also the most subtle dick joke that I've ever heard in my entire life is in there, so brilliantly subtle I missed it the first time around.
