Now the ME3 demo has been out for a few days, how are you finding the classes? Are you noticing significant differences between ME3 and 2? If you're new to the franchise what is your favourite class?

I've mostly been testing out the classes in multiplayer. I was favouring the Sentinel, as I did in ME2, but I'm not so sure I like the new tech armour. It seems to no longer act as an emergency shield, which I found very useful in ME2.

Thoughts?

I played the combat-heavy part of the demo with each class. Be aware that classes are somewhat different in multiplayer and single player due to the different species and ability restrictions. For example, playing a Krogan soldier in MP is way, way, waaaay different to playing soldier Shepard in SP.

The following is based on single player:

- Vanguards, my personal 'primary' class, are more fun than ever. It's like playing as a biotic wrecking ball. Charge is still awesome, nova is fun and looks spectacular, shockwaves have been changed. Love the biotic falcon punch.

- Soldier is still completely dull. I have no idea why anyone would play it. You get to shoot stuff, shoot stuff in slo-mo and shoot stuff with different bullets. Now they cn throw grenades, but they get the most boring kind of grenades.

- Infiltrators seem largely the same. Hard to judge properly since there aren't any sniper rifles in the SP demo.

- Adepts are tons of fun. Enemies on higher difficulties don't all have extra shield/armour/barriers, so biotics are much more useful, but not as overpowered as they were in ME1. Also, cluster grenades are amazing.

- Sentinels are a bit meh. Like the OP noted, the tech armour no longer gives you an instant recharge. Instead, it gives your shields a damage reduction. On the other hand, you can detonate it whenever you like which is cool.

- Engineers, for the first time in the series, are actually fun to play. Good all-rounder class, especially now that you'll be able to choose your weapons. Drones are more useful, the little deployable turret is surprisingly badass. I'm hoping it'll can change my imported sentinel to an engineer.

Incidentally, they changed up your squadmate's abilities as well. Garrus is still a useful all-rounder, but now he can drop mines. Liara is ridiculously powerful. With the right build she can hurl biotic nastiness around almost constantly.

My character's an Infiltrator and I plan to keep him that way, mostly because I like to keep consistancy in my games, but also because I find them a less dull version of the Soldier. Plus sniper rifles are badass.

As said, hard to judge in demo since there's no sniper rifle, but looking forward to trying it out properly in the full game.

Zhukov, in response to your post, yes you can change from being a Sentinel to Engineer on importing your character.

Bah, Sentinels have always been a crap-class if you ask me. Being able to use biotic and tech abilities is nice...too bad you don't get any good ones from either. Personally if I want biotic powers, I just play an Adept. Vanguard was fun in ME 1, but apparently I was too retarded to understand how Charge worked in ME 2, as I could charge into combat just fine, it was the "charge back out when things get too dicey" that I could never get to work...namely because (at least as far as I could tell) you had to be targeting an enemy in order to execute Charge...which means that warping back to the cover the rest of your party is behind isn't an option.

Soldiers, though, are indeed the most boring class. They're tough and powerful, but there's just really not much that's special about them. They can use all weapons....fan-frickin'-tastic. This is Mass Effect, if you're not throwing technical fireballs or warp hadukins, you're not having fun.

As for my favorite class, it's a toss up between Adept and Infiltrator. My FemShep is a (mostly) Paragon Infiltrator, while my MaleSHep is a (purely) Renegade Adept...just can't decide which one I like better. Infiltrator with Dominate as the bonus ability in ME 2 is just ridiculous, but the biotics in ME 2 are just as ridiculous themselves, especially the good ol' pull-warp combo with a squadmate.

Sentinels were at their best on the harder difficulties where all enemies have the extra layers of protection. A sentinel is the only class that can handle all three kinds of shields. Also, tech armour was extremely useful if used correctly.

Yeah, it was easy to charge in and get messed up in short order.

My favoured tactic was to get the area-of-effect version of the charge ability, charge into a clump of enemies, sending one flying (ideally over a cliff) and staggering the rest, shotgun and melee the survivors, then call in abilities from my squad (say, a shockwave from Jack and a concussive blast from Grunt) to cover my arse while I run for safety.

Also, charging partially recharges your barrier and causes even shielded enemies to stagger. This makes it useful in emergencies, even at point blank range.

I'll stick with the Infiltrator, Snipers should still be super effective against absolutely everything.

Though all the Biotic powers got really damn cool all of a sudden. Just look at the new Shockwave! Might swap my secondary Shepard to Vanguard in ME3 just for the awesome new look.

Really? That's fantastic! I grumbled my way through the Engineer playthrough and only made it fun by having him be socially oblivious and mildly psychopathic.

I always play an infiltrator, just for the raw power of the sniper rifles, so I was a bit dissapointed at the lack of them in the demo, but oh well, perhaps I'll get one when I finally get access to the multiplayer.

This may be the best comment relating to Mass Effect I've ever heard.

OT: I play infiltrator mostly, so, sniper rifles excluded, I thought it was a fun class and I like how they did a re-do on the grenades to be useful now, in ME1 I could never keep track of the damn things when I threw them. Now I just need to play as a Vanguard so I can plan my Renagade FemShep.

My only complaint is that I need to have my weapon out in combat and so I can't just kill everything as vanguard using only charge and biotic punch.

Im planning to try the others in the demo now, Im actully seeing the use of that action mode that skips cutscenes and lets you get straight to gameplay. In the demo at least it is very useful.

Engineers were my class of choice in ME1 and ME2 and will be in ME3, but I admit that I'm a bit confused as to how Sabotage now works (it's a weird cross of Sabotage from ME1 and AI Hacking now) but once I get that understood I'll be back to the old familiar rhythm of drone turret, AI Hack if you can, and then mix up Overload and Incinerate. The new turret I'm really having a hard time wrapping my head around. What's it for? It feels like just one more gun, and that's not very interesting.

Engineer in ME1 was crap on toast. ME2 engineer I enjoyed greatly, as the drone was like having a fourth ally that can be deployed to distract those scions or Harbinger. ME3 engineer... well, I dunno what's more awesome: being able to throw a turret that can be made to shock, shoot and be able to freeze foes with fire, and be able to send a drone with the potential to incinerate foes. I'm sure all of this can be done in single-player.

Engineer in multiplayer is very useful. The drone makes for a nice distraction to those shield-wielding bastards or nemeses.

A lot of soldier hate here :(

I play as the soldier - Gun/ war specialist over "magic" any day :)

Plus all i have to do is get a biotic in the party then i have the best of both.

A bit disappointing that they pretty much have EXACTLY the same powers as ME2.

Bite your tongue. Engineer in ME1 was a festival of enemy shutdown goodness. Between Overload, Sabotage, Damping and AI Hacking (plus a wealth of Geth enemies) you could pretty much nullify any enemy in seconds.

That said, if I'm reading your post right, is the idea of the new turret mostly area denial? Hmm. May need to investigate further.

AS much as every says about it, Imma stick with being a Solider, I don't have the strategic mind to use any other class.
I agree. I don't really care much for the powers other classes have, all I did in Mass Effect 2 was equip the appropriate ammo type for my assault rifle and fired away while under the effect of adrenaline rush. Really simple, just the way I like it. All this complicated power stuff is for the squad members.

I mainly play Vanguard, I've tried out most of the classes in the SP part of the demo now. Vanguard is still fantastic - my main Shepard took the assault rifle capability in ME2 so I was right at home with the weapon set in the demo, which helped. I enjoy Vanguards the most because it's a play style which encourages you to take risks and play aggressively, and that remains true in ME3 - Nova is a perfect example of that.

With the other classes, I've generally found them to be more fun than I did in previous games, which is great - it will encourage me to do (and finish) complete playthroughs with other classes.

On a side note, I love the new way that biotic projectiles move. Powers like Pull and Throw have a real sense of force now that they didn't in ME2.
