Mass Effect. Is this just my opinion? (spoiler alert, really don't click if you don't want spoilers)

When I first thought to post this I to to heart my own personal opinions, I mean, Mass Effect stands as number two in my top three games of all time. So I was wondering if this could just be a relection of my personal opinion of the game. But I honestly believe Mass Effect has the BEST story line out of any game ever produced in the history of gaming, Sure it might not be as original as Conker or NeverWinter Nights, but the absolute shift from Saren being the bad guy to the Reapers was done so well and everything just fit together so well, what do you guys think?

It was excellent Space Opera and a very well told story with good characters, however I still wouldn't call it "best ever" and it doesn't even really sit as a "Personal Best" in terms of plot line.

But the execution was phenomenal and certain scenes like when a certain party member turns against you or when a certain party member bites the bullet were very impacting.

Actually I have KOTOR and the story line is really good. That is a good game *thinks* hmmm I will more than likely break it out tonight and play my Guardian :p
However KOTOR 2's story sucked.... seriously

It is certainly one of my favourite games of all time - not the most original story, but in terms of sheer epicness it shone.

Hehe, you'll hear no argument from me in that regard. Although single-handedly cutting a bloody swathe through the Sith Academy near the end did a lot to ease my frustration with the game. I just didn't get the ending at all. Didn't the Ebon Hawk...you know... break apart and fall into a chasm when you landed on Malachor V? And yet it's there to pick you up when you beat the game...

These things seem to happen when the company who came up with the idea for a game outsource the sequal to a little-known company that can't possibly handle all the expectations. BioWare outsourced KOTOR to Obsidian Studios, and Relic outsourced DOW to Iron Lore Entertainment. Both sequels came out worse in that regard.

I'm just worried that Mass Effect 2 will follow this formula now that EA has BioWare by the balls. It's a shame really. Mass Effect is still one of the best RPG's I've ever played.

To be honest, it was one of the only games that made me truly sad when a character died (Your lieutenant. I tried to save him, but was too late.)

Actually, the ONLY other game that made me sad at a character death was Halo 3, but it doesn't really count since there's a way to save Johnson.

i'd say that it is one of the best, for me it's up there with FF8 (where you go through about 3 villains before you realise what's up), Kotor 1, where you turn out to be the galaxies worst nightmare suffering force-induced amnesia, Fable 1 which is just great.

i wouldn't go as far to say it was THE best though, not imo (but we're all entitled to our own)

Mass Effect was VERY good. While people say it's story may not have been original, it was refined to a depth you'd only get out of a T.V show with a rabid fanbase that had been around for 2 or 3 years.

No way in hell is Fable 1s story great. Sorry if I come off like an asshole but that is one of the most unoriginal pieces of shit I've ever played through.

if you get PC version, and wait around for a few monthes, there's a team on modders who are working to fix the ending and make the game it was supposed to be. all the files and stuff are there on the disks, they're just fragmented and not implemented.

they're here: [link]http://www.team-gizka.org/index.html[/link]

As has been said by other people I felt that the execution of the story was excellent. As to the plot and the writing, they were fairly average in my opinion. Which isn't to reflect badly on what I consider a great game, simply put, I thought it was a well-executed if a bit bland sci-fi shooter/RPG. Mass Effects plot draws you in and partially because Bioware fleshed their world out so well (almost to a Star Warsian degree what with all the codex entries) you get very much into the game, however everything from the love stories to the characters to the enemies I found just... not that original. Pretty bread and butter sci-fi. Even the whole Prothean situation kind of felt like it was out of a Squaresoft game. All that said, it creates a very fun, very polished experience. One of the reasons why sci-fi plots seem so reminiscent of each other is that they're good and people enjoy them. Seeing a polished piece of work refining something that's been done is often some of the best gaming you'll find.

It was a brilliant game, and an awesome story, but the moment I found out that the citadel had creatures that just appeared from random places from deep inside the mysterious space station where all the very important people hung out I just wanted to hit the fire alarm and get everyone to abandon the Citadel.

Great story, but they could have disguised the ending a bit better imho

Yeah, that's just your opinion. It was up to the standard of a sci-fi TV series, just not a particularly special one. It did have its moments, but most of it was average.
