Explore everywhere. Never know what you may find.

Also, some of the Renegade choices are really... well, hard to do. Not gameplay wise but an immersive game like Mass Effect can make some choices feel difficult to do. So, from my own opinion, be Paragon and not Renegade.

If playing on a difficulty below Hardcore, pick a class with Biotics (If you're into that kind of thing.)

Reason is because on Hardcore/Insanity. Every single enemy comes with some form of Armor or Shield. Means you have you attack them enough to drop their shields in order for your biotics to have their intended effect. (Casting throw on someone with a shield will only mildly irritate them, as opposed to violently flinging them across the room.)

So normal difficulty = masses of unshielded enemies + shockwave = WEEEEEEEEEE!

Talk to Mordin when you get him, his dialogue was by far the most entertaining to me. Thane and Garrus are interesting guys to chat with as well.

REMEMBER TO FEED THEM!

i was so sad when mine died....

anyway OT talk to your crewmates as often as you can, best content in mass efect is probably the dialogue

Be renegade. You're a space-badass instead of space-psychopath like going dark side in kotor. It's much more engaging to roleplay as interstellar jack bauer than space-hitler.

Pick up the DLC with the Mattock Rifle in it, it's ridiculously overpowered. I believe it's in the Firepower pack, but don't quote me on that.

Make sure you're swapping between squad members for appropriate quests. Garrus/Legion/Tali/Mordin for Geth missions, for example. I used Garrus and Miranda for all of my missions, because Miranda has the squad buff talent which you can't get anywhere else. Garrus is just a great damage dealer with a Sniper, and Area Overload or Concussive Shot can be useful at times.

Flirt with Kelly until she agrees to feed your fish. It's kind of all she's useful for.

Using a mass effect 1 save file may enhance your gameplay.
Get notepad++ and give yourself max renegade and paragon and minerals so you can do whatever you want.

This is only for the PC though :\

At some point on Tuchanka (I think that's it) a Krogan will start giving you lip. You'll be prompted to pull RT, or click the mouse by a red icon in the corner.

Do it.

I don't care if you're a Paragon. Do it.

I would love to but I couldn't get the first one. So I have to settle for the second
Might you explain why? I have a ps3 and not an xbox but I still went to play the first one, A lot of stuff loses its impact without the first game (seeing old members, the opening, getting your ship, et cetera).

Essentially, go full Paragon or Renegade, otherwise you might not have enough points to access some of the game's more... important options.

Mass Effect 1 was never made for the PS3 apparently. But all is not lost. I found a PC version of the first one. I'll see how far I can get on there.

Something about a microsoft company shafting Bioware. And yeah, that's how I did it.

Did you get a pre-owned ME2 or a new one? if the former, go buy the "Cerberus Network" DLC so the story from Mass Effect 1 can continue for your Mass Effect 2. Also, buy "Lair of the Shadow Broker" - it's an amazing DLC. I'm not sure how much of this requires a new game and how much comes free with the ps3 anyway - I think Lair of the Shadow Broker is free for Ps3 users, while Cerberus network is for new discs. If you've bought it new, disregard this paragraph, though make sure you download the content before you play the game or you'll be bludgeoning your head against the desk like I did.

Oh, and Me1 has a lot of close quarters combat, so unless you have biotics or an assault rifle, many of the assignments are going to be SoBs until you level up a bit, so don't be put off by them. Have fun.
