Mass Effect Steam Problem

I recently bought Mass Effect on Steam, hoping to play it. Before you ask if my Graphics Card isn't good enough, I can play Mass Effect 2 fine.

Anyways, any time I try to launch the game, it goes to a black screen, and stops. I've tried running it as an administrator, I've tried running steam as an admin, I went into the game files and tried the launcher, but it all comes to the same result: black screen, game is not responding.

Does anyone have any suggestions for me on what to do?

Sadly, whoever Bioware hired to make the PC port was very, very, very incompetent, to the point that the first Mass Effect only works with CERTAIN driver sets on Nvidia cards. So some people have been forced to actually downgrade their drivers in order to make the game work.

Does your blackscreen only begin when you're actually in the game (ie not the menus or the intro cutscene)? You can walk about, hear sounds, and see the minimap and other UI elements, but nothing else. I had that, but I don't think there's a solution; I looked for one but never got to play the game till I got a new PC years later.

I don't know if you have yet but Steam doesn't include the v1.1 patch for some reason which is vital for Windows 7 (and I think Vista) users. Install that.

It took me about a week before I realised this...

Edit: My mistake, patch 1.02

I'll definitely check that out, thanks. Does the 1.2 patch cause any problems either?
