July 9th, Piranha Games released this trailer of its upcoming project, a reboot of the Mechwarrior Series with updated graphics and a rewind in the story.
Mechwarrior HD Trailer
From year displayed in the trailer, 3015, places the game in the Succession Wars, a bloody struggle between the Houses of the Inner Sphere.
The trailer's action takes place between Davion and Kurita forces fighting over the world of Deshler along the Draconis March (a hotspot where Davion and Kurita have fought constantly).

As a stalwart MW and Battletech fan, this news is godsend. Mechwarrior 4 was an excellent game with mods making it even better, but the two explorations into the Console world (Mechassault and Mechassault 2) were far to arcadey (powerups? really?).
The tiny bit of gameplay in the video is really interesting stuff (though Piranha could do with fixing up the sound, Mech 4 had far juicier, meatier sounds than this trailer).
The pilot takes down the Jenner-D
(the first mech that Jump Jets onto the building) by firing SRMS into the building ITSELF,
obliterating the building and crushing the Jenner (a 35-ton light mech) with ease.
That's exciting stuff, no longer are buildings just giant shoeboxes that you can bounce off of, they're destructible,
as a game with giant robots should expect them to be.
The fact that it's 3015 also means the possibility of NO CLAN MECHS
(including the Mad Cat/ Timberwolf, the iconic mech of the Mechwarrior/Battletech universe)
either way, what are your thoughts?
if you can't tell, I'm kinda excited.

holy crap I had never even considered this being released with modern graphics and physics. I'll have to buy this one for old times sake if nothing else. I was around when the first mechwarrior was released and played all of them up to mw4 I didn't really like the x packs for it though. Good find though, I'll make sure to spread the word. Apparently this one is based on the unreal engine they apparently plan on making one based on the crytek engine as well.

I'm very excited I started off on Mechwarrior 2 and then played every Mechwarrior game after it when I was a kid. I loved Mechwarrior 4 and the new customization options that came with it. For example you could only put energy weapons in one space and ballistic weapons in another, but you couldn't make your mech outrageous like in the other games such as Mechwarrior 2 Mercenaries by putting PPCs in your cockpit. The other reason I loved the game was I believe Mechwarrior was a more realistic portrayal of if mechs were real in the very very distant future as compared to Japanese mech games like Armored Core. The mechs in Mechmwarrior are giant nuclear powered walking death machines that don't mimic human movement (except walking) like in some anime or fly around really fast. I hope I can finally afford to upgrade my PC before it comes out or I'm going to die a little on the inside.

Well, nowadays the Mechwarriors have online.

I kinda hope they still have em for online play, though. At least the Inner Sphere got their Warhammer back in all its awesome glory!

I'm totally expecting the Clans to appear either in the game (the storyline could be planned to extend to the clan invasion, since that could make for a really cool endgame fight with your inferior IS tech vs superior Clan tech) or in the inevitable Expansion Pack.

Also, in honor of the new game's announcement, Mechwarrior 4 and ALL of its expansion packs (That means the IS and Clan packs, Black Knight and Mercs) will be released FREE for anyone and everyone. This bodes well.

Well since the unreal engine basically has online packaged in it. I'm sure multiplayer will be an option, that's what made mw4 such a cool game. If they limit it to a single player they will be screwing themselves out of a lot of sales. I hope they include the ability for users to create custom maps myself. Map building and design could lead to some really epic battlefields.

I also hope they'll allow for a large number of players on a single map, to really give it that all out war feeling, and allow a place for the smaller mechs for hit and run tactics in the melee that will ensue.
I honestly as I said above hadn't given much thought to this series being continued, but now that I see it's getting some life breathed back into it. I'm very eager to see how it all plays out now, being an older gamer I was there for the very first mech warrior and the franchise does have a loyal fan in me even if I quit playing the old mw4 quite sometime ago in favor of newer games.

Needless to say I have a feeling this is going to be epic one way or another, it'll be full out epic gameplay, or a shortsighted epic failure that misses the mark. It's honestly too early to really tell. The potential is certainly there though.

That's pretty cool, though I already have them all.

AS for the trailer: Ten kinds of awesome, though the pilot was a shite shot with his PPC ;/ Missed twice before landing a hit on the Atlas' hip *sigh* Rookie pilots.

YOU HAVE ABUSED YOUR ABILITY TO COMMENT ON THIS TOPIC!
MechAssault series was like the Star Wars Christmas Special, the red-headed bastard step child of the Mechwarrior franchise.

That said, I loved every MW game, 1-4 (especially 3), and my only gripe is that in 3015 I wont be able to pilot a Sunder, or even a Bushwhacker.

you just can't hire them anymore, can you?

although judging from the fact that there is an atlas in the trailer, I would expect the Timberwolf (WOOHOO!) to be much a part of the game. unless ofcourse it was meant to be some kind of stripped-down gargoyle variant. which is basicly what an atlas seems to be.

I wonder if you can use a Firemoth? :D
*Imagens high speed running* (Firemoth speed in mech' 2 is listed as 162. closest to that is the jenner with 151, but still... Firemoth looks cooler.)

The Lethally fast Firemoth and:

slightly slower but better equiped (and armoured) Jenner

Well if you've played the original game you know that after taking a heavy hit it throws your aim off because the mech rocks from the blast.

I take back my original comment, he managed to take off the Atlas' left arm with his second shot and actually fired four PPC shots, the first and third missed.

The first one, yes, he was rocked by the blast but the second he didn't seem to get hit at all and instead merely fired wildly over the Atlas' left shoulder (considering he'd already burned off the left arm, that seems like a terrible shot to attempt anyway.)

What mech was he piloting anyway?

I wonder if you can use a Firemoth? :D
I know that the OP said there might not be any Battlemechs, but I've always had a fondness for the Masakari since I played Mechcommander, though I'd accept a Bushwacker for medium or Thor for heavy.

The lack of clan tech would be highly annoyin considerin I use mostly clan tech on my mechs. My poor Uziel is gonna have to change its loadout without bein able to pack on my dual ERPPCs and SRM launcher. Then again I can still adapt, I just dont know if it'll be with my uziel or not.
